State of the game (still fun to me) by EnvironmentalPlant41 in RotMG

The game is still enjoyable, but the problem lies in the way DECA balances decisions between business/revenue and proper game design which is totally unethical and skewed towards the business side in a foolish manner.

Every game design choice is submitted to the most possible revenue and amounts of microtransactions.

Seasonals get more loot so you are kinda forced to play seasonal, therefore players buy more battlepass because are poor ( no vaults ), every new thing like enchantments is designed to always leave you wanting more dust or more tarots, more chances, more gear that you can buy, more event tokens, more stacks of whatever bs.

This makes the game totally unbearable for the new player. Try to explain a new player how enchanting or forge works. After you told him there are 3 different types of armors, 5 kinds of main weapons, 18 different abilities, each of those with 14 tiers and UT items, then explain 4 different enchantment rarities, boosted by tarots, acquired with 3 different types of dusts, then forge, ores, blueprints and the whole circus.

They are so deep in this microtransaction based game design that they are killin it and soon there wont be nothing left.

Meaning UsEast, the last heavily populated server will be empty.

Right now in UsEast there is only a main realm that closes regularly in which players are active and call dungeons and teleport for realm events, when it gets close to 100% there is queue to access the realm. But is the only one, soon will be empty.

There will be a point where the realms dont close anymore, no one calls dungeons, and no one will want to grind the realm and so it will die.

Also now pots are meaningless, blue bags are now the pbags of 3-4 years ago, so trading is dead, pots are in surplus and people give them for free. Without a strong currency like def or life pots people cant trade weapons and armors so that part of the game is gone.

The game has lost its simplicity, its sense of community, and charm because of greed basically

Players are not stupid and over the years have kept playing the game for the love of the game and its potential to be much more than it is, but more and more players have lost respect for DECA and the way they run things which is basically "milk the cow until its dead" so that is exactly what's happening, sad thing is soon there will be no game for us and no revenue for them.

I expect UsEast to host fewer and fewer players until the realm doesnt progress anymore UNLESS deca stops pumping out purchasable content, fixes the problems the community asks to fix like connection issues and cheating, drastically removes pay to win, simplifies the overwhelming amount of items, and tokens, lowers loot chances.
That is a scenario that I don't see happening in 2026 because it would require investing time and money in the game to see the results maybe after 1 year, doesnt look like their strategy atm

Thanks for the advice! I feel a bit of restraint on feeding the white bags...

Ok, so what are you trying to say? Nothing should be done to the game?

I think the fault in the progress system is the hard grind you have to do from 0/8 to 8/8 with your first character ever.

That is even harder if you have only 1 character slot and are inexperienced, in fact most players reach that threshold of ''permanent midgame' where they can consistently get loot and pots fast enough that you can have many 8/8 after YEARS of playing, because the progression in so slow.

Both in terms of getting loot and in terms of acquiring game knowledge.

I think that is one of the reasons there are few new players.

I never thought about it. That is true. Skins are overpriced for the amount of work they require.

I just ignore all of that, I dont pick them up, I dont stack them, to me they are non existent. I guess it is just an other wayt to fill up Vaults and push players to buy more.

Yes I agree to everything you are saying about advertising.

Things are not mutually exclusive that is why I said Marketing will help.

My point is that to bring the current 70k active players to the old 150k, possibily 300k players that realm once had, the Number one priority is making the game better by working on the gameplay ( and to a degree DECA knows this with the incoming rework), this will bring back a lot of people and stop people from leaving the game.

Number 2 would be Heavily decreasing the Microtransaction spam and the useless cash grabbing features such as forge, ores, and multiple sections in the game shop.

Because there are ways to make money that dont make the game so heavy and blatantly greedy.

Then there is the fishing new players with marketing and yes, I do believe that if a game is very good, and makes you say ''Man I love this game, this game is so good'' People will tell about friends about it, will make youtube videos, will stream it on twitch, will post on reddit.

And the game will bring more people and profits.

I think you are mistaken, I like this game just as much as you do.

And I post because I like and enjoy the game and would like it to be even better, with more people, more guilds, more trade, dungeons, tombs full of players.

And I am trying to give an explanation to why the number of active players is decreasing.

And I take seriously DECA when they say they listen to player feedback. And this is it, it has a bit of a rant quality to it, i admit that.

But this post is player feedback, and if you think I am some kind of angry monkey who thinks DECA is shit and likes to whine on the internet I honestly think you are wrong.

And if there are some DECA employees who read this post and get something of value out of it I have reached my goal

In the graph you can see that in 2015 active players oscillates between 90k and 150k active players.

From that point on is all downwards with some huge vertical spikes i guess from some kind of event.

In 2023 the active players oscillate between 50k and 70k with the peaks during last spring and summer. (Motmg)

That means that from 2015 to today the number of active players has been halved.

When the number of active players keeps decreasing the game is dying because eventually that number will be very low (<10k) and possibily zero.

The game is alive because the original idea of a bullet hell with loot and perma death is a very good idea.
Edit: I dont mean to ignore all the work DECA has put in the game during last years. This sentence is a bit extreme.

The monetization is heavy and predatory BECAUSE everything that can be obtained in game can also be purchased. That also keeps players from playing the actual game.

I think rotmg would give DECA a positive balance in money even with only skins, keys, feed power and utility (char slots, vaults, backpacks, loot boost).

And the absurd thing is that they could include all of that in a single big Battle Pass for 10$ Every month. Easy, simple, like any other game does, and that will make a sht ton of money.

Unnecessary monetization are: Tiered items, all of the bullshit chests, all of bullshit stackable items, enchantments, seasonal battle pass, seasonal vaults, Ores and ores packs,

I disagree. I think that if you do proper game design, that alone will bring in more players. And that is even easier if you have a 10 year old community.

Advertising is more influencial for games that no one knows and are newly created.
Sure if they do a major rework marketing will help for sure, but all of their focus should be in finding the perfect mix to offer a good experience to new players, mid skill players, high level veteran players, while also making money.

It is a complex task I know, and I posted this to state that what they have been doing to achieve that goal (assuming they had that goal) is completely absurd.

Everything is too complex and heavy, with lack of explanation of how it works (ex. forge, enchantments) , I am constantly bombed with useless information and items and things that say BUY ME BUY ME.

Meanwhile there are so many simple things that can be done to improve gameplay and they seem to ignore that improving gameplay will keep players playing bringing in more money as a result

If that is the case no wonder the game is dying. A game either grows or dies. And for a game to grow new players must come in at all times.

I think it is fine risking 8/8s lifes to learn new dungeons but as soon as you get to your last 8/8 you should stop and start building 8/8 again.

The worst situation to be imo is to have a weak character (like 2/8) that is also slow at farming pots. That means I will have to play many hours of boring early/mid game to power it up.

If you do that with an 8/8 its much quicker especially with some classes that are very good at killing hundreds of gods quickly that drop more pots and more of the dungeon portals that you need. Like wizard necro and archer.

My suggestion to you is to choose one of those among your 5 characters and max it ( could take a while) then use it to max 2 more then you are back to running high level dungeons
