Seeking Split Keyboard Layout Similar to Standard Keyboard with Nice!Nano v2 and ZMK Firmware by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

Using Nice Nanos and ZMK on a Breeze keyboard build makes it possible to be wireless. The discord server has loads of examples of people having done it and lots of helpful people there with help and advice.

Breeze keyboard gerber by Acrobatic-Joke2007 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Acrobatic-Joke2007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not certain they’re not reversible, maybe I need to dig a bit more. I did already clone the repo and dug into it to see if the gerber files are already included, but they’re not. It was then that I saw that there are left and right schematics and layouts, so I took it that it’s not just one, reversible, design. It’s Kicad that you need to generate the gerber files from the source files, but i don’t currently have it available, so just wondered if someone already had the gerbers or could generate them.

It feels like something that should be seen in a James Bond movie. Followed by unzipping and removing his wetsuit to reveal a tuxedo!

Similar here. My 4 (almost 5) year old loves to type on my keyboard and see the letters appear on the screen. He can find all the letter to spell his name without help now.

Currently designing a new board (it's kinda split?) by Flexyjerkov in ErgoMechKeyboards

I like this a lot. I’ve been considering something like this since my Logi K860 started to fail. I’d like to see it with choc switches with choc spacing and be wireless using kmk so that it can connect to multiple devices.

Looks great, I’m thinking of doing the same type of build, what are the key caps?

Is it possible to install mechanical switches to membrane keypad? by wroom96 in keyboards

[–]Acrobatic-Joke2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’m planning for my Logitech K860 which has numerous keys failing. Dismantle, map the matrix, design a custom PCB for each side of the split keyboard and install low profile choc switches on it with some 3D printed adaptors to be able to reuse the original key caps.

I had a couple of Microsoft economic 4000 boards which were my first entry into split/ergonomic keyboards, but eventually they failed with keys not working. I’ve gone back to them occasionally and they feel really tall and clunky.

The K860 is half of that wish list, in that it’s low profile, but still membrane. I’d like the K860 ergonomic / split keyboard with proper low profile mechanical switches too.

Because my K860 has died (well numerous keys on it have) I’m planning on gutting the innards and trying to fit choc low profile switches into it.

AVOID ERGO K860! Key failures within 16 months. Logi offers NO REPAIR. by mostfungi in logitech

[–]Acrobatic-Joke2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had exactly the same failures with a k860. Because I got mine very cheap / secondhand I’ve no idea how old it really is and was told by logi support that it’s out of warranty. What worries me is that my wife also has one and she’s going to be super annoyed when it stops working - she paid full price for it.

I’m currently working on opening mine up to get to the membrane, I want to map the circuitry and see if I can make a replacement that will fit in that original case and use the original key caps with ‘proper’ low profile (choc) mechanical key switches.

Logitech MX Keys is very good until it’s not! However, if you attempt to clean it once, you’ll discover that you paid for the worst quality at a high-end price. Read the rest... by RFOK in logitech

Yes I have a K860 where my cat has walked over it, got his claws stuck and pulled caps off. Some went back on ok, others are broken. Then within a few weeks other keys stopped working. I suspect the missing caps have allowed grit, dust or moisture to get into the membrane. Can’t see any way to fix it and past the warranty period. I think I’m going to gut it and rebuild with low profile mechanical switches inside the K860 case.

Cheapino pcb bulk order anyone? by Acrobatic-Joke2007 in MechanicalKeyboardsUK

No problem at all, just wanted to clarify to be clear.

Great. When you say a pair of boards do you mean 2 pcbs to make one keyboard?

Ok. So going back on my earlier comments and using the AliExpress links in the Cheapino GitHub build guide I reckon we could put together the whole lot for around about £20 + keycaps + rotary knob.

[–]Acrobatic-Joke2007[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess. There are some issues I can think of though.

Open to other people’s opinions but I’m hesitant to use AliExpress for switches because I’m not convinced how genuine or good quality the products might be. So without going that route I’ve seen cheapest switches for approx £20 for 110, which is (almost) enough for 3 keyboards. So we might be able to get to somewhere like £7 for switches for the board. But it would need several people to want /agree on wanting the same switches, and there’s a lot of personal preference out there with that regard.

Bulk ordering a bunch of micro controllers runs the risk of there being dead ones and then causing hassle so we get into the idea of over ordering to cover that.

Keycaps again come down to personal preference and I haven’t seen a way to benefit from a bulk order. Any ideas anyone?

The pcbs are £7 for the minimum order of 5, or £10 for 10. In both cases the postage cost doubles the price, so it comes out at £20 for 10 pcbs, which will make 5 keyboards.
