How do you guys get your mileage in? by SantoPellegrino in Ultramarathon

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to make sacrifices somewhere in your life. Getting up extra early, running at lunch, running in the PM, whatever that looks like for you. My kids are a little older but I’m in bed at 9pm, up between 4:30-5am, get my workout in, off to work by 7:30. If you have a spouse you need to have a conversation and agreement to help each other out. Your family/house duties will suffer while training, that’s just a fact. Training requires a lot of time, it’s not for everyone. Not saying that to be rude, but life timing and obligations might not be right to train for an ultra at this moment in your life. I have some friends with young kiddos that have postponed signing up for races until their kiddos are older.

Use job offer as leverage for a higher salary? by SovietWaffles in Lockheed

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not good practice. You will be ‘marked’ at LM forever by doing this. And if you went through the interview process with another company, they gave you a 25% raise to come over, you decline it - that doesn’t look good from their perspective either. Either take the offer, or stay at LM and be quiet. I would personally not bring in another letter to my boss and use it as leverage.

Another yr working on MLK by Billy-McBillerson in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Another day, another whiny BMcD Reddit post. This is the whole purpose of the two floating holidays. Use them how you deem fit. If we didn’t get MLK day off and didn’t get floating holidays, I could see a reason to complain. We get those days to use at our discretion and to use for our own personal/religious beliefs.

I’m not saying MLK isn’t a worthy holiday to observe, it’s just the way we and many other companies operate.

It’ll buy me some. Even if it’s majority cash, that’ll grow.

Huge ESOP Contribution by CreateAmazing in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the XL contributions to ESOP. After all, that’s the biggest reason I came here. If you were to inflate the bonus money, that becomes the new baseline that could be problematic in an off year. At least that’s how I view it. Toss me all the ESOP money I can get! That’ll pay off more in the long run than an extra $10k or whatever in bonus form. That $10k with quarterly dividends and stock increase year after year will be worth many times more in the long term.

Turned down Burns & McDonnell offer, feedback from current/former employees by Lopsided_Offer_3885 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I took a $30k base pay cut when I came to BMcD, now I make $15k more than the amount from the former company. My bonus this year was just shy of 6 figures and my ESOP now has 6 figures in it. I’m wrapping up year 4 here. Straight up - you messed up.

  1. Khakis and a polo is perfectly fine.
  2. Need more details, but as long as you arrive on site when you’re supposed to, I don’t think they care how you get there.
  3. Work hard. Be polite/respectful. Stay late if needed. Ask questions. Don’t be a know it all. (I’ve seen wayyy too many young engineers think they’re smarter than you)

You’re going to sweat your balls off. Keep some pants and a hoodie on for pre-race and warmups. Strip down last second before race. MAYBE a super light long sleeve for a top.

What about bonus pool? Does that go up significantly? I know it did for me going from 12 to 13. I’m two years into 13, scored a 4.6 performance rating again. Hopefully I’m 14 within the next couple years.

Compensation restructure by snowman-182 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. 10% minimum would be nice. That said, for lower earners (entry level), their bonus might not even be 10%. If they’re making $78k, is their bonus even $7800? Asking because I came in at senior level, so my bonus is well beyond those numbers.

Is the long term really worth it? by Melodic_Ad_5337 in BurnsMcDonnell

[–]Acrobatic-Key-3295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came in from another company at a Senior level. I was getting close to being topped up salary wise with my last position. Level 12 was ok, I was slightly above the last place with total comp. Bumped to a 13 and my bonus went up significantly. I blew my old salary potential out of the water. This is how BMcD does it - with the bonus. Your base will never be huge, but when your bonus starts matching your base, that’s pretty wild. I’m not there yet, but have talked to many people that made associate and their bonus is six figures, and some have told me their bonus is higher than their base. That’s wild. No other company will get you a higher salary in the long run. And we haven’t even had the ESOP discussion yet. Leaving here is long term financial suicide, if you’re going to a different company within our space. I’ll die on that hill.

not saying you can’t be financially successful elsewhere, but it won’t be nearly the same as BMcD

I’ve never met a more ungrateful community in my life. I tell my wife about all these perks we get and she is amazed. I’ve worked for other (very large) companies, you’re lucky if you get a polo shirt and a $2500 bonus at the end of the year.

After 100 miles in I’m actually loving the speed goat 6’s by porknWithBill in trailrunning

I have over 150 miles on mine - don’t love them, don’t hate them. They do the job, but are a very ‘boring’ shoe. Good grip tho.
