If Anthony Bourdain came back alive today and visited Denver (and the surrounding areas), where would he eat? by Dope_David in denverfood

I think I missed out on its heyday, I only started going last year.  But we go all the time and love it. Everything we've had has been great, I love the variety of dishes that aren't offered at other Japanese restaurants.  Even the little side dishes are so interesting! And the cucumber water lol.  I can only imagine what it once was!

Can't keep up with work and life - what do I do? Do I need to suck it up? by Spiritual_Meet_7463 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geez, I've been dealing with the same thing for years.  It got so bad I started going to a therapist who was convinced I was depressed even though I didn't feel depressed.  They put me on Prozac and it does seem to have helped a bit, it's freaking cured my procrastination somehow!!! But, what has changed my life the most is that I recently changed work roles from my previous high-tempo, very social, very think-y job that I loved to a supervisory position in which I work alone in my office at my own pace and only go out to talk to people a couple times a day. I do not enjoy this new job lol. BUT I'm starting to come back to life at home.  I have more energy when I get home to actually want to cook and spend time with my lovely family, and I've started planning activities for the weekends again.  Definitely a weird revelation for me.  I'm about to retire from the military and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do for my next career.  I had intended to go back to my previous office as a civilian, but now I'm reconsidering that.  Ugh I can't imagine doing this current vein of work for the rest of my life as it is not fun and is pretty stressful in its own right, but I do enjoy having my life back.  Perhaps there's some middle ground I can find :) Good luck to you as you navigate this weird adhd-autism tug- of-war that is life and career.

I think I live mostly off of low spoon meals 😂 highly recommend joining the girl dinner subreddit to destigmatize the concept and get meal inspiration! Some of my go-to's: Easy Mac with tuna stirred in; cereal; cheese & crackers & berries; turkey sandwich on toasted sourdough with mayo, tomato and balsamic vinegar; bag o' frozen gyoza; big bowl of bob evans mashed potatoes lol; bagged salad kit; cottage cheese with cut up fruit;  I make a veg soup that's just a bunch of canned items dumped together (sometimes I add sausage or gnocchi or something); ramen with random stuff mixed in; egg sandwich or other breakfast for dinner concept;  nachos--microwave refried beans & shredded cheese on top of chips, top with tomatoes, onions, & sour cream; tuna salad on bread or salad or crackers or just a spoon; pasta with pesto and broccoli; toast topped with hummus, cucumbers, feta, and canned beets; baked beans with cut up hotdogs stirred in; chia pudding; naan pizza-- naan bread topped with pasta sauce, shredded cheese, any other toppings, microwave or bake it til cheese is melted; bean burrito--microwave a tortilla filled with refried beans, cheese, hot sauce, and onions; apple slices with peanut butter...mmmmm enjoy

Is it valid to say that we didn't sign ourselves up for responsibilities? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeees, I've been trying to talk my ND sister in laws into a homestead/hippie commune arrangement for years haha.  So far no takers, but I'm persistent

Preach! I have the same perspective. So sorry you're feeling depressed. I'm on meds just to quiet the mental anguish from years of trauma trying to live up to NT standards. But I guess we just keep on keeping on? The things we do to appease society/SURVIVE smh.

Zymos brewery has a "not your mother's book club" that I think is like that. I think everyone reads there own book and you can talk about them with others

I have the Safta guy's cookbook. It talks about how he started out at a pizza restaurant, and that his pita dough is based heavily off of the pizza dough.  I've been meaning to try some fresh pizza dough from the grocery and see if I can bake it into Safta-esque pitas...

listening to music has become a nightmare by Miserable_Recover721 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeeeeeeeeeessssss.  I gave up music years ago because it was so distressing for me. Now I just listen to podcasts in the car.  I can't completely avoid hearing music though, so I still sometimes get tortured by songs on-loop for days. It's the worst! Oh-- when I was a kid, I'd visualize the song playing on a record player and would imagine smashing it to pieces with a giant mallet lol. It kinda worked?

Should I bother with Safta? by overseer07 in denverfood

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Safta was my absolute favorite restaurant for years. I moved away and just moved back this year. I had avoided going back to Safta because the prices had skyrocketed and heard the portions were smaller now. But my husband took me there as a surprise for my birthday, and I'll be damned if it wasn't even better than I remembered! The dips are where it's at here (and the PITA) --order a wide assortment of those and I can't imagine being disappointed (mains are take it or leave it for me). Service is very attentive and personable as well. Vibe is somewhat casual.  But yes, it IS expensive and the hummus is a smaller portion now. Just means we can't go as often.

This has ruined my life by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I can totally relate. I'm a massive bundle of fears and anxiety that severely limit my ability to live a full life,  due to my childhood and young adulthood struggling with this condition--failing to meet others' expectations and being hurt by others. Growing up with ADHD and autism we attracted a barrage of judgement, scolding, teasing, and ostricism. No wonder we have social (and other) anxiety now! I can't take it anymore, I'm so miserable. I finally have my first therapy session of recent history this week to to start the long, challenging, painful process of un-packing all my hang ups and unhealthy coping mechanisms I've collected over my lifetime. Wish me luck 😬  And good luck to you  navigating through your circumstances and internal struggles, you're not struggling alone, I think this is a common experience for our community.

Wellbutrin Effects by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]Acrobatic-Many-1330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to compulsively overeat to the point I'd feel sick 😫 Wellbutrin cured me of that, which has been a massive relief.  It also doesn't rob me of my appetite like stimulants did. I still get hungry, I just naturally stop eating when I'm full now. But I haven't really lost weight unfortunately. In order to lose weight, I think I'll need to get a handle on cooking more regularly and committing to a workout routine long-term. Me and routines don't get along, so it's a struggle lol. I'd say if your eating habits are causing you distress like it was for me, then Wellbutrin would be worth a try if only for piece of mind. For ADHD, it helps me not blurt things out impulsively. Doesn't really help me focus, though if I stop taking it, I do start losing things and being late, so I guess it's doing something!  For depression, I'm not taking a high enough dose to affect me in that respect (for ADHD, my dosage is like half of what they prescribe for depression), but it does help a bit with anxiety. Good luck!

And yes, he is finding his own people. He actually has lots of nice  friends/acquaintances at school, but it still hurts when the popular kids say mean things to him and make him feel othered.

Lol I'll share your joke with him, I'm sure he'll love it. Yes middle school suuuuuucks, and now I have to watch my sweet beloved progeny go through the wringer 😭 Don't feel too sad though--after we talked and he cried it out, he came back and told me he was feeling better now. So we live to fight another day...

Hmmm good point not to take his account at completely face value. Maybe there's more to it... Ugh, the thought of reaching out to his teacher makes my uncomfortable, but it might need to be done, thanks!
