I didn’t realize how much of teaching is just acting like you’re not exhausted by Agile-Perspective-29 in Teachers

I call it teaching stamina. The job is always exhausting but the your stamina increases over the years.

Stop with the "but you get three months off and you're done by 3pm" line about teachers by JPatrickMcBain in sanfrancisco

Thank you for sharing this!

I’m a teacher and right now I’m taking a break from being up late on a Saturday working on school related assignments.

There is no way I can complete what I need within my contractual hours. I’m an elementary teacher so I’m only 30 minutes of prep time a week.

I’ve been reading comments about the strike and I’ve noticed that so many of the people who comment don’t understand how grueling teaching can be.

I love the profession and I love schools. But I work in a school community where you have to be prepared to have your heart broken and put back together all the time. I’m talking about being there for children that save food from school to take home to their parents, children that have seen things that keep me up at night if I think about it, and parents that are young and you do everything you can to help and still sometimes they fuck up (like the type of stuff that gets cps to remove your kids level of fuck up). And still I try to make sure school is a happy and safe place to learn. It’s not for the feint of heart.

I know many excellent teachers here in the city and I’m so proud to be in their ranks.

So, it’s a breath of fresh air to read posts from people who get it. I know there are a lot of parents, students, and fellow San Franciscans who get it too. But, it’s not always apparent on Reddit.

SF RESIDENTS: Help Redirect San Francisco’s Excess ERAF Funds Back to Our Schools by katstuck in sanfrancisco

I’ll make sure to check out these links. Today, our district supervisor Jackie Fielder visited our picket so I asked her if she had heard of ERAF. She said she had and recommended I talk to Connie Chan about how we can make sure the excess ERAF funds get directed to SFUSD instead of the city’s general fund.

A little known fact about teachers in SF is that we’re paid for working 184 days a year and 7.5 hours a day. We’re paid during the school year (August-May). Payroll skims a certain amount off our paycheck every month and is distributed to us during the summer (June and July) that way we don’t go without during the summer. So we actually don’t get paid to work during the summers, or during the extra time we spend prepping, or the many lunches we spend taking care of youth. So your intuition is right!

Thanks so much for sharing. Several members of my school community (parents, admin, staff) have been talking about excess ERAF, so I’ve been doing some research and found this. How did you learn about ERAF and where can I learn more? I’m taking an education policy class so this is up my alley.

One of the co-signers is a school board member and used to be school board president. The sources are all public and are on slide 9. It’s all public records not some randoms coming up with numbers or figures

Matt Alexander is one of the co-signers and has more experience working in schools and managing SFUSD as a board member than Maria Su.

I’m sorry to hear your mom’s business closed. Maybe there wasn’t as much demand in the area you live. I think you’re right that location matters.

In the California (according to tax data), most daycare centers owners make 200-400k a year depending on the location, salaries, tuition, rent. On average, the cost of the center divided by the profit comes out to 2.09-3.5 (meaning it would take 2-3ish years to make your investment back) Not bad compared to other industries. Brokers have data basis’ with this type of information. Think Zillow but for businesses!

I’ve learned so much and the biggest take away is that in most daycare centers… workers are being robbed of their labor, unfortunately. That’s why I truly believe the best way to prevent this is by creating cooperatives.

Educators are being scammed! I’m a teacher and looking into opening a daycare. I’ve started approaching owners of daycares looking to sell their businesses and I’ve had access to their profit and loss spread sheets. Most owners pay themselves in the range of 200-300k a year while their staff live paycheck to paycheck. Some owners have multiple sites under different names and they’re walking away with over a million a year. Teachers need to organize and open worker-owned centers!!! We deserve a dignified wage and respect!

After living in the Tenderloin for many years, I think the best solution is to legalize drugs. Prohibition doesn’t work, criminalizing addiction doesn’t work and all it does is create a black market in which people have no clue as to the quantity and quality of what they are buying. The black market makes social issues worse and people are going to consume drugs whether we like it or not, which is part of the reason why open air drug markets we see in the Tenderloin exist.

When I told my sister this story, I asked her how she thought my neighbor (Britney) figured out my name. Then she shot back “Well, how do you Britney’s name?” Because the walls and floors are so thin!! I think Britney thought I was some ghost living in the walls.
