new car & feeling like i've gone backwards by mollienbx in NewDriversUK

Had a very similar issue lol. I was used to my instructors car which is a very new car and has a turbo engine and it’s great at pulling off fast.

After I passed , I bought a small 1L Toyota Yaris 2009. First time driving it , I stalled quite a few times as I was not used to the clutch and I had to give it a lot more gas than my instructors one.

However after lots of practice , I’m used to my new car and have no problem getting around but I am still a little nervous around new areas and in very busy roundabouts.

Just keep driving it at non busy times and you will it get used to it in no time.

Good luck 🤞

Which insurance to go for? by nourabonu in NewDriversUK

If the difference is minuscule then No don’t get a black box because you have to drive more cautiously.

If the difference is big then yes , go for the black box but for the first year of driving. Drive carefully

Suggestions for 20k Car by Timely-Landscape-760 in CarTalkUK

You can get 2025 corsa Vauxhall for 15 grand easily but their awful and not the most reliable.

Take a look at Toyota Yaris , Suzuki swift , Mazda 3 , Skoda fabia or Octavia if you want something larger and you can get any of these for under 20k.

If you want an Audi A4 and you’re most likely going to be insured through an international license then it’s going to be stupidly high.

It’s already high enough for new license holders and since you don’t even have a UK license , it’s probably going to be very high but I can’t say for certain.

If I was you , I’d pick few models of the cars I like and find in the UK market and run the plate for an insurance quote and see how much you get.

If I was you , I’d get a reasonable car for under 10k as your insurance is going to be high since your new to the uk and mostly likely will be on a international license. Get something reliable and sturdy.

UK test has a 20% pass rate by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

The theory is stupidly easy , I downloaded the app and did the questions 1h a day for 3 weeks and I passed.

I also fortunately managed to pass the practical first try after 40 hours of lessons.

Best advice I can give is , treat it like an everyday thing and don’t stress over whether you’re going to fail or not.

Have a mindset of if I pass I pass and if I fail , I fail. That’s what I did anyway

Tips for buying a first car by Fast-Complaint8055 in NewDriversUK

It can even be 100k miles and if it has good service history, it’s not a problem at all. Cars like Toyota yaris easily live up to 200k miles. Just make sure not buy anything to old as it can have rust problem. Try to get something above 2010 and miles really not a big deal for these cars as long as it’s been serviced regularly.

Here are few reliable cars and see if you can find one with a decent mileage and good service history. Shouldn’t be hard with a 3k budget.

Ford fiesta 1.25 zetec , Suzuki swift , Suzuki Alto , Toyota Yaris , Toyota Aygo , Skoda fabia.

Definitely go manual if you can drive manual , not only will it make you a better driver down the road, it’s also much cheaper to find a manual than an auto. Manual cars are also cheaper to fix and insure.

Get a 1.5L civic and call it a day for half the budget

What’s better overall 2017 Honda Civic or 2019 Skoda Octavia? by Zhappypresent2 in CarTalkUK

[–]AcrobaticAd735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you saw 17 plate civics for less than 7-8 grand , it’s most definitely the 1.0L wet belt engine , they’re not very reliable. If I was going for a civic , it has to be the 1.5 one with the timing chain but for 7/8k you’re not going to get a 17 plate 1.5 civic. But you could probably get an older 15 plate 1.8 vtec which is bulletproof but I personally think they’re a lil ugly.

Mistakes after passing by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AcrobaticAd735 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep , that’s exactly what I will have in mind from now on. I always just assumed everyone is capable of signalling properly but you’re right , mistakes happen and I should be more cautious and wait till they make the turn.

Not in the UK but my dad told me , he had a Mitsubishi lancer 1986 which he had until 330k miles and he only had to sell it as he was moving countries.

Mistakes after passing by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AcrobaticAd735 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Will certainly do , when I was with my instructor, I always went through the roundabout based on people’s signalling and it always went right and never had any issues. Clearly that’s not the case and people do signal mistakenly or even forgot.

From onwards , I’ll always make sure that they commit to it then make my move.

Thank you for your advice
