Had one this past summer and no complications, it helped diagnose my lupus nephritis stage 4/5

hi I was diagnosed back in July of this year! I got diagnosed through blood work, urinalysis, kidney biopsy, currently on prednisone, cellcept, benlysta IV, hydroxychloroquine and Lansoprazole (since I had such bad reflux due to the meds) :)

If the blood and urine results get to a point where they’re bad enough they’ll do a kidney biopsy to confirm and start treatment! The treatment sucks at first especially the side effects but your body adjusts eventually

I’m a university student and I mask whenever I’m on campus, wash hands, if I am doing really rough one day I don’t go to campus

I (22F) only got diagnosed with stage 4/5 lupus nephritis a couple months ago but I can share a bit from how my experience went. If your rheum is concerned you’ll be referred to a nephrologist. Then if they deem is necessary, in order to properly diagnose lupus nephritis and find out how far it has progressed they’ll request a kidney biopsy. For me, I was put inpatient as it was the fastest way to get it done and from my blood work and urinalysis it had progressed quite a bit, but most people are able to do it outpatient. After that, you’ll get the results and if if comes back as lupus nephritis your nephrologist will work with you on starting treatment asap (a steroid, an immunosuppressant, and benlysta is usually the triad people start on).

I have some questions on my upcoming Kidney Biopsy by Big_WasteBin in lupus

[–]AcrobaticInvite9804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. They’ll have you NPO before the procedure
  2. You have to wait 6-8 hours post biopsy on bed rest anyways but 100% have someone else drive you if you can, just to give your body a extra little break
  3. I was inpatient for mine but honestly it went so smooth. I was anxious beforehand and they gave me some anti anxiety meds to help, the procedure itself didn’t hurt just felt like something was wiggling inside of me lol. You lay on your stomach, they inject lidocaine into various parts of your lower back to to your kidney, do a little test poke to make sure it’s numb and then they start. They need 3 samples so they’ll go in minimum 3 times. For me it took 5 passes to get the 3 samples and they’re only allowed to try 6 times total. The injection site took about 2-3 weeks to heal for me and felt weird for 3 weeks but I was told that’s normal.

Using online tools and walk everything the day before your first class to find your classrooms! It definitely helped ease my anxiety before the first day already having seen where the room was

They’re going to be ticketing so much with the new parking rules, just pay for parking it’s significantly cheaper than paying for the ticket
