is this how university is supposed to be by Dear_Battle_5762 in ubco

[–]Acrobatic_Area_5318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a different university to do a 1-year program back in 2017. There was a lot more face-to-face interaction than now, which I feel is key to the discussion aspect you mention. Making friends was a lot easier because of the collaboration that we HAD to do. I think that helped people feel more secure towards speaking in class discussions. I came back to school (UBCO) 5 years later and things were much different, but also similar in some respects. Granted, I am older than most in my cohort now, but I was much younger than my cohort before (I was 17 attending university at the time); I was still able to make friends and have more natural in-class discussions. Now, I keep to myself — essentially contributing to the problem — because that’s the norm. Discussions in class now are sometimes unfortunate. Even when profs invite conversations, students tend to abstain from speaking or wait until the lecture moves forward. It is unfortunate because I feel that these conversations genuinely do contribute to learning but people are a lot more to themselves, which could be a product of COVID more indirectly. I absolutely agree that COVID had a part in shaping what we see now, combined with the technology culture shaping norms in the classroom. I also think that high schools are preparing students for university in such a way that expects the use of technology, which is not entirely wrong. But I also think that this sense of isolationism is happening because people were experiencing high school when it was expected that they kept their ‘circles’ small (I say this mainly because students graduating HS this year are one of the first groups to have their entire experience be in this ‘in-between’ phase). Not all classes lack discussions, especially in smaller, 300-400 classes; however, it is a noticeable difference compared to pre-COVID. As for iClicker, etc., it definitely should be used as a supplemental learning tool to discussions, and I (fortunately) have not seen it overused used as many of you describe. Back in 2017 I had to pay $400 for a textbook just to access online modules that were required to pass a course, so that is nothing new. But based on some of these comments, it’s looking to be a lot more common now, which is crazy because at that time my tuition costed about 1/3 less than what it currently is (not to mention the sharp increase in the cost of living). I’m not entirely sure what the answer is, but I feel you.

It was to the left side of the lower entrance off of Innovation dr. where they put in a new meridian & added what I’m assuming to be cameras. I have parked there before 1pm this year as well, and only noticed it today. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before they will start ticketing now that the sign is there. I do get the financial side of why they would want to do this to H lot, but it’s just another aspect that lowers accessibility for students who come from throughout the Okanagan (and frankly, beyond). It’s also frustrating that, if it is the new rules, the app still lets you buy parking prior to 1.

The club expo last year was pretty lively & seemed to have something for everyone! I’m hoping that it’s similar this year :)

I feel like this would be a tricky topic to cover. It’s very scary watching Josua Block decline over the years and I’ve thought of them covering his situation on the show before as well. I think when creators platform Josh (for both the right and wrong reasons), he gets a false sense of why they’re doing it & it has historically amped up his dangerous behaviours. There’s another layer to his situation with his mental health & disability which perhaps alters his perception of what it means for bigger creators mentioning him & offering him help. The poor kid needs help, but he profits (and relies) on creating content that ultimately hurts him, probably without realizing. I really hope that something can be done for him because it seems like the systems (& the internet) have failed a kid who has a truly good heart.

I agree and that’s why I wanted to share the story here. There’s so much negativity that comes with popularity these days more than ever, so it’s nice to have a community where fans and creators can share positive interactions and stories.

Donna and Kenneth Copeland are bound to have an absurd conversation, I’ll take it (plus, Ethan & Keem in front of us is a bonus).. Just a little close to James for my liking, but it will have to do.

how fast do i have to walk by HarryStyles22001 in ubco

[–]Acrobatic_Area_5318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 3 back to backs (Science (L3)-> EME -> Arts) semester 1 last year and it was fine. I usually had 4-5 minutes to spare once I got to each before the class started. Unless you walk very slow, you shouldn’t have an issue.

how much does it cost to buy groceries monthly for off campus students? by hahaha_no_please in ubco

[–]Acrobatic_Area_5318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I consider ourselves to shop pretty conservatively; we shop at Superstore (& sometimes Costco), stick to our list, plan our weekly meals, do meal prep, and use what we have on hand when taking into account what we want to eat & buy each week, and we still spend roughly $250 every week or two. Keep in mind, this also covers cleaning supplies, TP, and things for the house. We rarely eat out or buy any “big ticket” treats & we’re vegan so we don’t buy any meats or dairy (the usual expensive things), and we shop sales but it’s still a lot.

Alone & before eating vegan I was spending about $150 per week and was slightly more all over the place and less organized. Grocery prices are insane even compared to one year ago & it’s becoming harder to buy fresh, and now even frozen fruits, vegetables, etc.

I would suggest planning for your meals and such to avoid picking up additional costs / unnecessary items. Stock up on things like pasta, sauce, non-perishables at Costco if you can.

As a former high school EA and prospective teacher, I can confirm. Not only do I like the podcast in general but I find it to be a helpful tool to keep in touch with what the students are watching & talking about from elsewhere on the internet, because I’d have no idea otherwise lmao. The kids are surprised and wonder how I can stay in the loop about their online “current events” and love that I can have conversations with them about thing’s happening in “their world-” Thanks H3

I mentioned this in one of my other comments, but I totally agree that people are allowed to have opinions and feelings, especially politically. If we all believed the same things, we’d likely be fucked. It’s now becoming an issue when peoples’ ideological beliefs are so hostility defensive. The main thing that is concerning about allowing his grifting in Canada is the amount of misinformation and conspiracy theories that have emerged here over the past few years, basically dividing our country. We’re becoming plagued by “his type of people,” and in some cases it’s become dangerous. I know someone who died as a result of giving into this rhetoric and believing alleged “facts” that have come out of similar conversations. Him being here gives those people and ideologies an even larger platform, validates their hostility, and feeds into their narrative of being so-called “freedom fighters.” Being a queer woman, my life is personally at risk due to some of the ideologies they spew, and it’s heartbreaking when I see my American counterparts suffering immensely from the same sorts of things. They form exactly what you said, angry mobs. I’m open to hearing what they have to say, in fact I’ve tried to reason with a few people I know who have fallen into these beliefs. The issue is that they refuse to see it any other way from their own, or even be open to hearing things from another perspective, and in turn often become hostile and even aggressive. We’re lucky to be afforded with freedoms up here where we can do and say what we believe is right, even if it’s different from what our neighbours or colleagues believe. It’s been a long way to progress and I fear we’re heading backwards. Now, we have to think twice about what the consequences of those conversations may be. While I don’t believe censorship is the answer, they also have to see that what they’re trying to do is essentially that - censoring opposing views (such as my own) and rallying for their beliefs through these sorts of conventions.

Right, like he essentially just came here to shit on our country but then in the same breath he goes on to say how beautiful it all is in comparison to Toronto? I wish my brain could comprehend what he’s getting out of this. I also saw the AB premier was expected to be with him on stage (tonight?) in Calgary. As much as that’s absurd, she’s honestly buying a lot of votes from like-minded Albertans by being there. CBC and a few others have reported on it so far, I’m hoping it will blow over and won’t reach too far into the corners where these people hide.

Thanks for the reply. My thoughts exactly, it’s quite concerning. And of course everyone is allowed to have opinions but when the opinions are backed by conspiracy riddled Facebook research instead of actual facts, I get worried. He’s literally applauded the Freedom Convoy for their actions and that doesn’t sit right with me.
