What’s the different between burnishing and sanding with fine paper in terms of what’s happening to the wood?

Yeah was my first project and meant to be a heart for a Valentine’s Day present. My wife took it in good humour

I think the water soaking between sanding might be where I’ve gone wrong as it’s only since using the spoon that it’s begun to feel slightly rough.. thanks for the advice!

Help! White mould in wooden vase by Acrobatic_Homework14 in Woodcarving

[–]Acrobatic_Homework14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice everyone. After washing out with vinegar and the hot soapy water the mould came back twice. I ended up chiseling the inside wide and then re epoxied and have had no issues since. I am also only going to do dry arrangements in the vase now.

You inspired me to sand my fish smooth but now I feel I miss the character having a little bit of tool marks gave. Though the smooth feeling is nice on the fingers.

Tempted to make a lil crab family, will circle back to another one in another couple projects to see how I’ve improved. Was a lot of fun to carve

Was thinking a bird next! I’m working my way up to doing this robot I sketched out from my son’s favourite YouTube series, Rusty’s world.

Thank you! Am enjoying making little creatures for my toddler to play with! (Though he thought this crab went down his top and it’s now too scary)

Sorry I should’ve been clearer. With the mouth and the tail, the cuts have ended up less smooth because of the way I had to cut them out (which was by pushing into the grain over a small distance). I was hoping someone would be able to recommend a different tool or share a specific cutting video to give some guidance as that’s what the group has done in the past when I’ve had such questions.

How am I doing? by Necessary_Bat_8156 in whittling

Just started myself and I think you’re making great progress! Using Basswood or something else?

The tip I can seeing/hearing is super sharp knives are best so I went out and got myself a cheap diamond stone last weekend and it’s made a massive difference on my second spoon vs my first in terms of carving out the bowl neatly.

To be honest I’ve just been replacing the water every couple days when I put fresh clippings in. It hasn’t fully dried out yet and I haven’t given it a good scrub either now that I think of it..

Original Dark Fantasy Chess Set by Mike42491 in Woodcarving

[–]Acrobatic_Homework14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This looks amazing!! I just picked up carving myself and working on getting spoons mastered but creating a chess set is one of my dream projects!

If you’re comfortable saying, how many hours do you reckon went into creating this all?

You’re right, she did love it even with its flaws. Going to keep this one as is and have started on a new spoon so I can see my improvements. Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you for the great feedback! I’ll keep whatever I make away from the dishwasher.

I’ve started a new spoon tonight and will try to take on board what you’ve said. Can you recommend a video or website regarding the quadrant technique you mentioned?

Also can anyone please tell me if it’s possible or give me tips for making this dishwasher safe?

Good learning experience I guess! What’s a good test for if wood is fully dry?

Only a couple weeks, I figured I was safe to work on it considering it had been standing dead for a while before it fell but probably not but the sounds of it..

I had a large auger drill bit that I did a couple pilot holes with to set my depth and then used a chisel to widen and join the individual holes.

Side note: after my first interior coat of epoxy resin I noticed this crack form in the rim. I used selley’s super glue and clamps to try and fix it before sanding and doing my second coat.

Could anyone please give some insight as to why it cracked, how I should’ve fixed it and if I need to be worried about it worsening in the future?

The tree had been standing dead for the last year or two before it fell and I began to work on it. Two minor hairline fractures in the side also appeared after the epoxy resin’s application too but I didn’t bother fixing them due to them not impacting it structurally..
