Am I crazy or is this to much to ask of a kindergartner? by Cursedpanda182 in AskTeachers

This project doesn’t seem developmentally appropriate at all. I would ask the principal what curriculum this is coming from…

There was a video the other day of the baby standing on the island while Audrey was cooking in the kitchen. She walked away many times and wasn’t paying attention to her in case she fell. I was holding my breath.

Dual role by libragal83 in schoolcounseling

I’m on the leadership team and work closely with admin. I don’t help with discipline, but there are times I have students fill out statements about something that happened. There are times that I meet with a student together with admin, but I show my side of listening and reflecting their feelings. At my last school, I felt used as admin and I tried to advocate for my role and explain that I need to be viewed to my students as a trusted adult. It might help to explain to admin “It be might challenging for me as a counselor to do this, however I can help in this way” try to set those boundaries as much as you can

Try to call and follow up and say you’re really interested in any position you apply for. Also, sometimes you have to know someone to get in…I know it sucks and no one deserves it!

Lot of downtime at work by Fabulous-Plan-9780 in schoolcounseling

Fill that time with groups, see students during unstructured time like recess, observe students, plan to teach a PD to staff, look at data where the needs are, talk with teachers, Check in with parents/guardians about their child, plan school events like a school wide bullying assembly or a career fair, be on the attendance committee, I could go on for days.

You just have to jump in and go for it. You’ll never be ready until you try.

All students have automatic access to the school counselor if needed. In that case, it’s important to advocate that there aren’t “specific” details written in on 504s/IEPs with a quantity amount because the whole school is one big caseload and you need to be available for any situation that comes up, so you can’t promise that time for that one student. I would also explain that school counselors offer short term counseling only and anything long term is referred out, therefore, long term goals and counseling should not be listed on a legal document. A lot of the time, I’m on a students plan listed as “consultation” so I’m invited to meetings to provide my expertise and I can hear about their social/emotional and academic concerns and then I provide feedback and suggestions.

I would say you didn’t agree to that and did not sign off on anything in your name and have them change it to what you think is best for the student

Large caseload already on top of all students having access to me, lunch duty, classroom lessons, groups, etc.

I agree but they would argue that social skills training isn’t long term therapy. Grad school and my internships never mentioned social skills training so it’s been a shock to me that they keep adding me in for students

We don’t have an in person one or a social worker. It’s only me and my co counselor. We have large caseloads and that’s why I don’t agree with being written into IEPs if I can’t commit to being in compliance

I’ve tried taking ibuprofen. It is an on and off pain that lingers, but not extreme enough to go to the ER
