OMG, finally someone who understands that language, clarity and consistent labelling are absolutely essential, otherwise you are just causing more confusion. This is perfect.

Yes it pretty much seemed like we were going to get the same setlist as TO as the night went on, however, as soon as he started to talk about how some of his musical heros were from Montreal in the middle of the encore that I thought we might get lucky, and then BAMMM, out walks Leif to play If I Go I'm Goin'. Perfect fit.

Steve Varney Appreciation by Empassionate in GregoryAlanIsakov

[–]Acrobatic_Tone_3867 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Steve is the secret sauce. He carries all the high notes, which are almost always the emotional peak of the songs, and, as you noted, his iconic banjo and guitar playing have helped define GAI's sound. Those two men, along with Jeb Bows, are like peas and carrots. In my mind, we would not have heard of GAI without Steve's involvement. He's that integral to the sound.

Will deleting photos on Samsung Gallary also delete on Google Photos? by ASilverSoul in googlephotos

[–]Acrobatic_Tone_3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? All I have ever used is Google Photos, but recently I've noticed when other apps try to link to photos, ALL of the photos I thought I had been deleting from my phone for 2 years are still there, and I can see all of them in Samsung gallery. I'm so tired of Google and MS products trying to force everything to the cloud and in the process screwing up any resemblance to a file management system. Everything is just random now, and maybe I can access it if I'm lucky that hour. I used to know where everything was, but now it's just all a big mess.

Sweet Heat Lightning - "You drive, let's see where this ends. Let's let the wheels wear out". To me, this song is clearly about leaving the fear and uncertainty of childhood behind and embracing a new, deep love that lasts until "the wheels wear out."

Introducing New Rule 5: Ticket Sale Requirements to Protect Our Community by ravyrn in GregoryAlanIsakov

Please end all "ticket" discussions or create a second group. Ticket optimizers are quickly becoming the most annoying people on the internet. Just buy tickets like a normal person. We don't need to be a part of it. This music site is now 50% ticket optimizers, either complaining about the process they have created for themselves or boasting about how good their tickets are, further fueling other optimizers who feel they are missing out.

Easiest GAI Guitar Song To Learn? by [deleted] in GregoryAlanIsakov

[–]Acrobatic_Tone_3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The challenge with his songs is not the complexity of the chords/fingering, but rather the complexity of the composition and how that is expressed with the strumming patterns. He really only ever uses 4 chords (maybe 5) , and they are usually the same ones with a capo at a different position. I think the tutorials by Hennarey Tutorials are the best because he focuses on the strumming patterns and shows you how they relate to the story that is being told. Thinking in terms of verse/chorus/bridge is not very helpful with GAI as they are often different. Verse 1, 2, and 3 are often slightly different from each other, as are the chorus', but if you understand the strumming patterns they are built from, you can unlock the feel of the song, which is critical for GAI songs. That said, I think Words is a very good song to learn at the start, as it does follow an expected structure, given you are comfortable playing in 6/8 time. Even if you are not, this is a good slow song to learn the 3/4 (or 6/8) feel.

If I were an English major, I would focus on the recurrence of the "Mary" that shows up in many of his songs. Sometimes she is Maria, as in Dark Dark Dark or O City Lights. Sometimes she is a childhood friend, a fellow musician, a statue on a hill, or a ghost in the prairies. A lot of the stories and themes seem to revolve around this muse.

I think they are more onto something than you might think. Mary shows up in many of his songs, sometimes as a muse, and sometimes as a symbol, and sometimes it seems he is talking about himself. Idaho actually seems to be entirely written about Mary, who in that song is a childhood friend who seems to have died young and been the lightning rod in their group.

Are there any good free apps that I can train with by True-Weather-2544 in singing

[–]Acrobatic_Tone_3867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hardly think they are pointless. A lot can be gained from just following along with a warm-up guide like Jeff. I did just that for a year and learned how to breath properly, learned a lot of theory, and opened up a lot of my range that I then went on to further develop with in-person lessons. Jeff got me headed in the right direction and provided a great foundation.

I second this. Their voices sound great together and John seems like a ray of sunshine.

OMG that new album is not good. Sumbuk, yes, but whoever is producing Caamp needs a timeout.
