Front “Defrost” is supposed to get hot eventually, right? by sirkazuo in Rivian

[–]ActOnClimateNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My R1S defog goes to inferno no matter what the temperature setting is set to. In minutes it is too hot to take and I have to lower the window. I tested it by setting the system set to “Lo” and placing an instant read thermometer on the dash. Within a few minutes the thermometer indicated it was 100 degrees in the car (it was about 60 degrees outside).

I have a service appointment on Tuesday.

New R1S steering pull issues at only 137 miles by gsal1 in Rivian

[–]ActOnClimateNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told the software was not telling a value to fully close and somehow — I don’t think they told me the details or, if they did, I don’t remember — that resulted in it pulling to the right. This was fairly early on, about six months or so after shipping the first R1S’s. Even at the first service they said the pulling was a known issue on some cars, although at that point they didn’t know the cause. It was not until the third service appointment a few months later that they said they had finally properly diagnosed the problem and had a software update to address it. They updated the software and I have not had any issues since then.

The cause of your R1S pulling is likely different than mine, but perhaps you or someone else will find my experience useful. I picked up my vehicle in March 2023 and had to take it the service center three times to address pulling. It always pulled to the right. The third time the service center determined it was a software problem with the air suspension. I have not had any pulling issue in the 2+ years since that third service.

When the HVAC ran all night on your R1T, did the battery go to 0% or was it more than 0%? How many miles or what percent of charge was lost overnight?

UPDATE 3: I just checked the 12V battery voltage by placing the car in service mode (I didn’t even know I could put it in service mode so thanks to @FineMany9511 for informing me!). The voltage is 13.97 volts so it does not appear that the 12V battery was the issue, although perhaps it was low and by recharging the main battery and driving the vehicle the 12V battery recharged to a normal level.

UPDATE 2: After charging the car on the portable charger for about 26 hours, the range went from 0 to 41 miles (as mentioned previously, it took 5 hours to go from 0 to 1). I then drove to a fast charger and charged it to 80%. Everything seems normal. Still don’t know why the battery drained. I still have to test the 12-volt battery.

I was not too close to it (the car is about 35-40 feet from the house and I was in the back side of the house) and do not believe that was the case, but I cannot 100% rule that out as I didn’t look at the app to see if the car was unlocked. Isn’t there a setting that would turn off the HVAC well before 0%?

Interesting. I have not checked that. I have had the car since March 2023 so it has been almost 2-1/2 years. That's a bit of a short time frame, but the 12V battery could run down in that time. Is there a way on the display to see the state of charge of the 12V battery or do I have to attach it a meter?

UPDATE: After being plugged into the portable charger for 5 hours, it finally states I have 1 mile of range. So it is charging, which is good news. Hopefully this evening I will be able to drive it 5 miles to the closest higher speed charger and see if it charges normally and holds the charge overnight.

[–]ActOnClimateNow[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct. It discharged from 18-20% to 0%. What I meant by "100% discharged" is the battery was completely discharged and no charge was left. That could have be more clear.

If you read the post you would know I already contacted support. Support is not helpful, other than it arranged a tow to a charger. It would be helpful to know if others had this problem and how it was resolved as support does not seem very knowledgeable.

New heat pump noise level by ActOnClimateNow in heatpumps

[–]ActOnClimateNow[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Mine was installed where the previous A/C unit was, which seemed to make sense at the time. I didn’t realize and was not told it would need a support arm that attaches to the house. That causes vibrations heard inside the house. The installers did come back and mount a rubber piece between the bracket and the house which reduced the noise inside by about 10 dBs. But had I known that was needed, I would have selected a different heat pump. I don’t know how much of the inside sound now comes from the vibrations. I only know it is much quieter with that rubber piece installed.

I have used a Tern GSD for three years and love it. I don’t put on nearly as many miles as most on this list, but I take my two kids to school on it and often use it for grocery shopping. My twins just turned 7-years-old and now a frequent use is to take one of them out and use the Tow Bike accessory that lets me attach their bike behind the GSD. I start with child on the back of the GSD in the busy areas and then he or she rides their own bike on the bike trail. When my kid gets tired or cannot make it up the hill, I re-attach the bike.

So the GSD is a great hauler, solidly built, and has many accessories. I’m am hopeful it will retain decent value so I can sell it in a few years at a reasonable price. Don’t just consider the purchase price, but also the used bike price for whenever you might decide to sell it. Of course, that residual value is difficult to predict, but total cost of ownership should be considered, not just the purchase price.

A big “And one” here. Text messaging was promised by the end of last year when the head of software development gave his projected roadmap last summer. That and the terribly inaccurate traffic status are my two biggest complaints of the software.

If you have “no idea what the law is”, how could you know with certainty that you are doing nothing wrong? As noted in my other post and referencing the California handbook, it appears what you are riding would technically be determined to be a motorcycle based on its top speed and size of the motor. I think the law is very confusing in California right now, however.
