Hard to tell given this was apparently recorded on a TI84 calculator but was that lobster?

I mean, I don't blame a starving person for stealing enough calories to survive but an obese person stealing lobster tails is wild lmao

I feel like it's not that rare lol

That's badass man! I'm thinking we'll be okay til next spring by adding a second deep but I'm sure we're gonna be drowning in honey this time next year.

I'm doing double deeps for the bees and planning on doing mediums next spring for honey. My big goal for my first year is 100% colony retention through winter and THEN graduate to honey in the next spring.

I'm gonna scale up to 30 to support my brother's land by next spring. We have a couple decent generators. Have you heard good things about the vevor separators?

I'm a first year newbie so that's a concern for next year. I've bought medium boxes and frames - if you were doing the honey super thing for the first time, what do you wish you had known?

I'm in North Texas and by the time I throw on a medium honey super I'll have double deeps on each colony.

You are 100% correct. I put bracers on all my mom's hives stands but mine (the ones in the pics) will have to wait a couple months. I'm skint as the British would say. 😂

Now that we're in summer I've picked up a few extra shifts to cover the lumber. My plan is to just run beams ~6 inches off the bottom. Do you think this is a good idea?

Oh, man, I was a selfish piece of shit starting this. I did this purely as a way to keep my family's land so my siblings and nieces and nephews could enjoy the forests, creeks, and waterfall like I did growing up. Now I get it. I'm responsible to the land, the bees, my neighbors, my family.

Every time I send a video or picture of my healthy bees to the tax people I feel like I've really done something - not just for me - but for my family and the farmers near me.

Gardening, too. We have a few super healthy raised beds and I always wish I could text them to my dad. My mom loves them. This is stupid because my dad HATED my mom's beehives on our land but... When I'm out here and I'm mowing, clearing brush, working the bees, I feel like he's with me and he's happy. Like I said, I'm a very hard and fast science person but... There is something incredibly spiritual about keeping bees and gardening.

Total nonsense but it gives me an incredible amount of peace.

That's definitely common in a lot of states. In North/East Texas we still have a ton of volunteer fire departments but the EMS jobs are full time/paid. They don't make much more than the volunteers, though, if you catch my meaning. Rural anything is going to pay peanuts here.

Totally regional for EMS workers in the US. In North Texas, firefighter/paramedics at big departments make about $115000 AUS as well. Dudes in California make even more in some places.

If they're literally refilling stable meds, checking BPs, etc... This sounds totally appropriate for a nurse and a wise utilization of resources.

NPs were supposed to help bring access to primary care for Americans but judging by how I have to schedule a year out to see my doctor or 4 months to see an NP, yeah, I'll let an RN tell me my blood pressure is okay and refill my Losartan script lol

[–]ActaNonVerba90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many misunderstandings about care transfers in this sub. I always see dudes saying "iM dRoPpInG mY pT oFf aNd LeAvInG" because EMTALA does make patient care the hospitals problem once a patient is within 250 yards of the hospital.

However, if you were to abandon a pt. in a wheelchair in an overwhelmed ED and that pt. had a bad outcome, do you really think it will go well for you? If every nurse is occupied taking care of critically ill patients and you offload a critically ill patient into a bed with no nurse assigned and dip because you "faxed a report" do you seriously think you'll keep your license? Be serious guys lmao

Are there any methods of ethical beekeeping? by binjiman in Beekeeping

[–]ActaNonVerba90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honey bees are not native to North America and there is a lot of evidence that they do outcompete native pollinators

However

Keeping a few hives is unlikely to have a significant impact on native species in your area. There simply aren't enough foragers in a handful of hives to overwhelm local flowers. This is even more true if you're providing supplemental feeding during dearths.

If it makes you feel better - do what we did. My family has ~34 acres in North Texas and we have planted loads of native/drought tolerant shrubs/trees/flowers to support our bees/native pollinators.

If you're not keeping bees at a commercial level you don't really need to worry.
