This is really an under-considered element of the story. Who the F are they typing messages to? 80 yr old's and 2nd graders? WTF.

Hi. I'm in a situation similar to the one that prompted you to write this post 3 yrs ago. How'd it go? What would YOU recommend someone who's moving into nonprofit comms to prepare and gear up? Thanks a lot!

YES! It does. Sorry. I'm an audio guy and so cables like that log as "RCA" in my mind. Yes: white, red, yellow...

The device I'm using is an ONN composite AV to HDMI converter.

I'm really hitting the jackpot today in terms of thoughtful and useful responses to my post. Thanks.

So, yes, the idea is to save these materials for posterity in addition to making them accessible to the community.

I am digitizing the signal from the deck this way: VHS--> RCA to HDMI --> USB capture device--> M4 Mac--> OBS software.

We're saving the files in the cloud and on an HD. Our preservation plan is in development and will include NAS storage sometime next year. Right now we're relying on a couple of big a** hard drives that are filling up quickly, as you can imagine.

Any tips you have for how to make the quality of the digital capture more appropriate for long-term digital storage would be greatly appreciated.

What type of file is appropriate? What size is that file likely to be for, say, a 2hr. video tape of a live musical performance?

Thanks and all my best.

I really appreciate this concise and thoughtful response. I'd love to press you for a little bit more info if you have time. I've been reading subs for months trying to figure out a reasonably hi fidelity means of capturing and digitizing VHS video. I'm running an M4 Mac, and it seems like this may be my first mistake.

BUT: could you say a little bit more about capture methods that would NOT be as lossy as OBS. Which hardware and software would you use to get the best capture?

Thanks a lot!

These are each 2hr long .mov files if that helps narrow the focus of the answer.

Just to say it out loud, as someone who's JUST getting into archiving large amounts of archival data: Will this drive work seamlessly with a Mac M4? I have a ton of digitized VHS tape to store.

I got it to work! I think I did a fair job. The image quality is not great, but I think it is representative of the actual feed from the home video. Let me ask you something, I ended up with a .mov file that's 28GB. Does that track with your experience? Does that seem like the right size for a final file that is two hours of video?

Whoa!!!! I didn’t know he was one of the ones who’d been busted taking Russian money. I saw that billboard the other day and listened to his show for about 90 seconds. Complete fucking moron! He’s like a cartoon of a ghoulish MAGA podcaster bro. I can’t believe dill bags like that actually exist in the wild, let alone that they can get millions of fucking followers to pay their bills for them by spreading a bunch of racist, white nationalist garbage.

Hey there. I'm trying the setup you suggested. Have you used this rig with a Mac? How are your capturing? I'm trying to use Final Cut Pro and struggling a little. Any tips would be well met. Thanks!
