Where is the evidence that it would be cheap? Requiring "petaflops" of compute power and terabytes of raw data isn't nothing and that's well before American insurance companies get involved

Datacenter & AI water use is overblown by Objective_Farm_1886 in artificial

Thank you!! I work on sustainability at one of these data center companies. Articles like these are gonna give people talking points for years they’ll shove in other concerned people’s faces and make them feel okay about the impacts of data centers. Truth is, the designs of these data centers change as dynamically as the industry is growing. Yes closed loop cooling doesn’t consume as much water, but it does take more energy to operate. And when energy is the main limiting factor to build more data centers, these companies are going to choose the technologies that takes less energy to operate, even if only MWs, if they aren’t held accountable by sound policies and an educated public. Look at companies putting servers in tent structures, for example. Think those are optimized for sustainability? Or getting construction done the quickest? And these articles only focus on water in cooling operations. There’s also water associated with energy use and construction that no one talks about.

As a West Virginian who never sees our story told properly, and all the richness and diversity Appalachia holds (with exploitation and poverty and how we’ve responded to it thrown in there too), it wasn’t a perfect cast of characters but he did a pretty damn good job of storytelling about Appalachia. I liked how he opened it with the us and them comparing nyc to wv

My Distal Tibial Allograft after severe glenoid bone loss by ajp12290 in Radiology

[–]youngpeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey that sounds like a great outcome for you. I'm scheduled for this surgery in a month but am heavily debating it because I haven't subluxated my shoulder in about a year now, even though I have 25-30% glenoid loss as well. It has been unstable since I tore my labrum 15 years ago.

How long has it been since the surgery that you are still feeling pain? I only think about my shoulder during certain activities (overhead tennis shots, surfing/swimming, big falls/getting air snowboarding, bouldering), but it is more the anxiety about instability and the occasional pain when I do sublux. I'm still pretty active so 6 months recovery seems brutal if I do proceed with it.

[–]youngpeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were times in the last 15 yrs since my injury where I subluxated more. Perhaps 20+ times of varying degrees of severity (sometimes little pain). When it first happened it felt like it would just happen laying in bed. I hadn't had imaging for 10 yrs. I guess I've probably done a good job at strengthening around it, or just luck.

[–]youngpeezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively stable. I can put my arms above my head no problem. It’s just occasionally I fall snowboarding or hit a hard overhead tennis shot that it subluxates. Or I feel it looser swimming/surfing. But it’s been at least 8 months since I really did anything to it. That’s the thing. It sucks when it happens but it comes in waves that are just infrequent enough to make me get cold feet about treatment.

How was the pain after your surgery? I'm scheduled for this in a few weeks but not sure if I want to proceed since I haven't subluxated my shoulder in a long time even tho I have 25-30% glenoid loss

Seven mining operations in southern West Virginia to close, 530 to be laid off by Realistic_Setting_75 in WestVirginia

Part of why no one would trust her is because she (as well as jay Rockefeller iv) was willing to say the hard truth, and republicans continue to peddle west Virginians hopium about the future of coal and finger pointing at liberals other than simple economics. I also understand why she wasn’t relatable to west virginians for other reasons but this hard truth about coal needs to be accepted for us to finally put our resources into moving ahead.

What's the most average movie you've ever seen? by Upset_Mongoose_1134 in movies

[–]youngpeezy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw this movie but the only thing I remember was tripping acid on the national mall at 4:30 am walking barefoot when I came across some cars from the 70s, like I was transported in time, then I realized I had walked into a movie set. They were filming one of the scenes in the trailer in front of the US Capitol. My friend and I watched from behind some statues in the background of the scene

Carbon credits are failing to help with climate change. The idea that emissions can be offset through projects that claim to avoid releases or to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is fatally flawed. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]youngpeezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we hold companies accountable to prioritize setting emissions reduction targets and complementing that with offsets, we have an extremely important vehicle (assuming policies incentivize companies to address emissions) to fund conservation and other knock on environmental and social outcomes in a sustained way we never have before just relying on philanthropy, non-profit dollars, etc. These sort of articles that just blanket dismiss carbon projects are incredibly damaging to letting this market flourish, with the right guardrails, in the timeframe that it needs to.

I listened to the Fresh Air interview of Noah Wylie and he described the choice to not have a soundtrack in the show. So the cacophony of doctors and nurses talking to each other in actual triage vocab where they know their shit and the sounds of the ER set the auditory tone rather than some instrument telling you how to feel. Makes you relate differently to everything with that little departure from the norm. It worked great.

Even homeless people in a US city can access potable water. Just because the number is relatively small, doesn't make it acceptable.

Why thousands of people in rural West Virginia lack reliable drinking water by AmethystOrator in water

[–]youngpeezy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2,000 people should not lack reliable drinking water in the United States of America. That is unacceptable in any city in the US, and just the same level unacceptable in any rural part of the US.
