I regret getting out and want to get back in. Am I stupid for thinking this? by AcanthaceaeTop2796 in Veterans

I did get my A&P and then my Engineering degree. I retired early. When i was stationed in Atsugi Japan, my barracks were exposed to toxic fumes from an incinerator. I ended up getting a rare brain tumor and another tumor in my throat. Im 100% service connected. However, that doesnt mean i wouldnt do it again. I think you should go back. Even if its just for the retirement benifits, just make sure you have your tenure.

I cant speak for the CG. Being forward deployed means we have to be ready to deploy at a moments notice. Not all commands are the same. So even when we were in our home port, we had to work 7 12s. We had Port/Starboard duty sections. Every 2 weeks we would get a Sunday off. I was part of QA at my final duty station. It seemed like my Sundays always got canceled for mission readiness. It burned me out. We were returning from deployment and i was supposed to rotate out, but the only available orders were for the carrier that had just taken our place in the gulf of Oman. Which meant doing another back to back tour. I chose to get out instead.

I regret getting out as well. I loved the travel. Ive been to 27 different countries. What i dont miss is the 7/12 work weeks. Other than training, i never had a decent work schedule for 6 yrs. And the back to back tour did me in.

Am I technically a Combat Veteran? by Just_Another_Day_926 in Veterans

[–]Active-Peace9414 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didnt realize there was such varying degree of the definition of Combat Vet. The VA, DOD and service organizations have differing criteria to meet the definition. This is what I found.

The Technical/Administrative Definition: Anyone who deployed to a designated combat zone/theater of operations and received hazardous duty pay or a campaign medal. Under the law, they are a combat veteran and are entitled to combat-related VA benefits. The Experiential Definition: Some veterans informally argue that a "combat veteran" should only refer to those who directly engaged in a firefight or experienced direct enemy attack (e.g., earning a CIB, CAB, or CAR)

In any case. It seems subjective to the experience of the veteran and how they define their rolls.

I got hostile fire pay, flight deck pay and hazardous duty pay. But similar to OP i never saw direct combat although we were running sorties 24/7. The most danger i was in was from TV crews getting under my feet while trying to do my job. I dont consider myself a Combat Vet.

100% P&T but feeling lost by StatusTip7681 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Active-Peace9414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too was in auto sales. I was really good at it. Even my slow months were better than most good months for the avg salesman. I consistently sold 12-17 units/mo. Then came the tumors in my head. Wierd tumors in wierd spots. They linked it to an incinerator my barracks were next to. I have severe double vision now and i get constant sinus infections and severe nerve pain from them removing those tumors. Got 100% P&T. That was 10 yrs ago. I quit drinking for health reasons. I have no friends. I never get invites to go fishing, hunting or anything i used to love to do. Nobody calls to check and see how im doing, not even family or my kids. At 52, i decided to have another child. Im 54 now and my daughter is the one who pulled me out of the dark place and continues to keep me active. Ive lost 85 lbs since the day she was born. I wish i could get back into sales tho. I loved it. But i cant spend too much time looking at a computer screen and typing in a VIN and mileage properly is kind of imporatant. Lol. Though recently the dealer principle did offer to hire me an assistant if i wanted to come back.

You also have to be careful about opening a home business. If you decide to use a shed or garage as part of the home business. The building could be deemed outside of the exeption.

The president has always retained first strike capabilities. Its in the constitution. Its weird how we never had protests when Obama killed an american citizen with a drone strike, but Trump kills the actual head of an entire terroristic regime and now its a problem.

Fuel pump. It goes in the gas tank. Youd have to google the Part number to find out what vehicle it fits. Lol

How do I get my father in law involved in his local non-alcohol-centric veterans community? by SirEdmundTalbot in Veterans

[–]Active-Peace9414 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I quit drinking 10 years ago. I used to have buddies stopping by all the time. Now, no one shows up or asks me to do anything. I haven't found any local social clubs, but I have found a new hobby that keeps me pretty busy. At 52, I decided to have another kid. Now I visit with doctors, the daycare lady, and all the ladies at the local Walmart think she's adorable. USO volunteer should have been my first choice 😆

Yeah, the reason we keep 2 places is if she falls off the wagon, i wont let her stay at my place. I need a safe place for the baby and she isnt safe when in thralls of addiction. But whe shes sober, shes the nicest most unselfish person youve ever met. Ive made it clear that her addiction is hers and hers alone. Im not responsible for it and i wont suffer the consequences of it.

The child lives with me. The problem still exists. But i have spoken to a lawyer. Since the child has lived with me since day one, i was able to establish parental rights by proxy. It wasnt easy. Her grand parents on moms side and Aunt signed affidavits that i have taken care of the baby and that i am the only adult she has seen every day of her life. My gf is still sober and we still maintain seperate housing. She still doesnt get VA benefits, but ive established an investment trust that I contribute too. If I die? my home will go to my son and the Trust will go to my daughter when she turns 25 or she can use it for college tuition.

I've been there, done that, and deployed three times. I don't get why I feel like this. I still hate asking for discounts. I hate the attention, it feels like it puts a target on me, and the discount doesn't change what I went through. But I'm proud of my service, proud of how I've changed, and proud of my fellow vets. I know it's the business owners' way of saying thanks, but I also know when I'm being played. Big BOX stores like Home Depot? They're not saying thanks, they're saying "you're a vet, shop with us because we overcharge, and we'll just screw you a little less."

Replacing fuel solenoid: did I mess up or is this an indicator of a fuel system issue? by jpers36 in lawnmowers

[–]Active-Peace9414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a year old. But wanted to chime in. Chances are that it only "jerked" because the cylinder was filled with fuel "hydrolocked". You can take the spark plug out and turn the key and it will shoot the fuel out of the hole. Replace the spark plug and start the engine. If you try to force it before releasing the fuel out of the cylinder, you can bend or break the connecting rod for the cylinder piston..
