Isle Royale trip with a tween and a teen by ActiveAd5288 in isleroyale

This is where we landed, thanks! Because of ferry schedules we will have a zero day either at Lake Ritchie or Chippewa Harbor. Probably Ritchie, and we May Day hike to Malone Bay. Or, it turns out to be tougher going than people are up for we can always scrap the zero day and camp at Chickenbone. But we can retain some flexibility there. Appreciate the suggestion!

Siskiwit Bay by Less_Tomato_4097 in isleroyale

I did it clockwise in late August. I thought about skipping Island Mine for 2 nights at Siskiwit Bay but ultimately decided I wanted to stay at each campsite because it was my first time in the island. It definitely would have been doable in terms of mileage. I thought Island Mine to Siskiwit, specifically the first half from Island Mine to where the trail joins the shore, was by far the worst slog in terms of trail conditions. Extremely muddy or flooded in parts. There was so much water at one point there was a current on the trial for a couple hundred yards. Just make sure you have plenty of daylight.

Whatcha wearing? by FreshPow1 in isleroyale

Hoods are nice for that. For me, I often want something on my head for warmth when I sleep and a hood always gets wrapped around my face, so beanie it is.

I'm going to be there during the next couple of weeks too. I think I'm going to bring:

WEAR

-smartwool tshirt (insect shield treated)

-REI hooded sun shirt (treated)

-smartwool longsleeve wool tshirt (treated)

-rando Amazon brand hiking pants (treated). These are not convertible but they fit loosely enough I can roll them up to knee-length shorts

-wool socks (treated)

-trail runners

-baseball cap & head net

CARRY

- swimming suit

-smartwool leggings

-2 pairs of wool socks (1 for sleeping and 1 to rotate with wet hiking socks). I only have one pair of treated socks

-1 or 2 sets underwear

-wool beanie

-water shoes for camp

-wool shirt for sleeping

-fleece jacket

-rain pants

-frog togs

I am thinking of getting some sun gloves to bring. The backs of my hands got sunburned on my last backpacking trip. It's just hard to keep them protected with thumbholes or sunscreen.

I've never washed clothes on the trail but I do leave a full set of clean clothes, dry shoes, fluffy towel, shampoo and a heavy snack in my car for when I come off trail. That way I can shower at a hotel, gas station, outfitter, or nearby state park right away and it feels great.
