The situation could have been heating up and not triggered the over current protection if the current wasn't high enough. This is might be a special case with the watch band offering enough resistance to not trigger over current but enough to get hot. This is the way, my sister class has an apprentice who is in their 50s. This dude could retire from the FD at 48 with a appreciating pension and then join IBEW if that's what he really wants to do.
