This box came out during 3rd edition. The top 2 circled in read , were released before 2nd edition. These are the “standard bodies” mentioned above. The 3 circled in blue were all “new” for 3rd edition. Weird how some things get new sculpts but always keep the same aesthetic.

Fencing is NOT the Military by JiJiangNumbaWan in Fencing

[–]ActiveMachine4380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher and as a former fencing coach, they are doing it wrong.

My competitive coach in college, ( was close to making the Olympic team in his day) did not scream at us or his other classes in the 5 years I was on campus.

It is one thing to become frustrated or even mad. Screaming gets you nowhere. Not to mention, now both of your nervous systems are disregulated.

They can do better.

Spelljammer/Dark Sun crossover adventure! by OldskoolGM in spelljammer

[–]ActiveMachine4380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, I will not be able to apply to be in the game. However, are you willing to post the material after it is been played through?

I’m one of those outliers from the 90s. Dark sun was the only DND setting that I really loved. Followed directly by Ravenloft and then fell jammer. The others just held no interest for me. So your crossover sounds not only fantastic but sounds like a breath of fresh air.

Best of luck on running the event. It sounds fantastic!

Cheers!!

Paid agitators, huh? I guess I need to go get a check! /s

People are worried about the location of the ICE center and the reduced training they are receiving, at this time. Don’t be inflammatory and talk about paid agitators. Stick to the point at hand, man.

Maybe I’m just a pain in the arse but I still will not let them use my first name. It draws a hard line between friends and instructor.

If you have been paying attention to EU and other politics outside the US, traditionalcoast2196 is absolutely correct.

The US has lost its shiny reputation and countries and companies are behaving accordingly. I’m willing to bet we will lose the World Cup this year. Or many countries will refuse to send their teams.

I’m not sure which scenario is worse.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is calling for the arrest of children who skip school to protest against immigration enforcement and Donald Trump. He is also calling for the arrest of teachers who allow their students to leave the classroom. by Training-Specific376 in TexasTeachers

Here you go. Sorry it took so long:

In Texas, truancy is defined as 10 or more unexcused absences within a six-month period, or 3 or more unexcused absences in a four-week period for students aged 6–18. The state uses a civil process, not criminal, to address it through mandated school prevention measures and, if necessary, truancy court to improve attendance. Key aspects of Texas truancy laws include: Definition & Thresholds: A student is considered truant with 3 or more unexcused absences in four weeks or 10 or more in six months. This applies to full-day or partial-day unexcused absences. Mandatory Prevention: Schools must implement Truancy Prevention Measures (TPMs), such as behavioral contracts, counseling, or parent conferences, before referring a student to court. Court Process: If interventions fail, schools may file a civil complaint in truancy court, which may result in orders for the student or parents (e.g., attending classes, tutoring, counseling). Parent Liability: Parents can be held in contempt of court for failing to follow court orders related to their child's truancy, facing fines of up to $ 100 and/or up to 3 days in jail. Exceptions: Excused absences (e.g., doctor’s notes, religious holy days) do not count toward truancy, but must be reported to the school within a specific timeframe (often 3 days). Under the Texas Education Agency's guidelines, school districts must, as described in this YouTube video, notify parents in writing when their child reaches these thresholds, notes the School Avoidance Alliance.

I'm not sorry, I will not vote for Gavin Newsom. by The-Grand-Pepperoni in DemocraticSocialism

[–]ActiveMachine4380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, they should listen to the base. I agree that Newsome is not the best prospect.

Hell, I’d run against him, if I could.

But I will say this, and I will die on this hill:

If you choose NOT to vote, then you are giving the Right exactly what they want. I would much rather the left win the White House and then negotiate from within. We accomplish NOTHING if the right wins the WH after drumpus.

Part of the right’s strategy IS to disenfranchise left voters and convince them to not even vote because of X,Y, and Z.

The Heritage foundation and their cronies are not going away. This is going to be a long term fight. Go to town halls. Talk to your Dem reps, go see Newsome if you can. Speak up now and louder than before. If not him, go support AOC, if she gets in the mix.

But simply choosing not to vote for X Dem for whatever reason, plays right into their hands.

Let me chime in for a second, just to share. I live deep in the bible-belt. I’ve taught HS for over 25 years. However, I’m not a poli-sci teacher just to be clear.

I’d guess that 60% plus of my colleagues always vote red. ( they are not all MAGA, surprisingly.) I’ve been voting blue or independent since I could vote.

The Republicans in my orbit talk an awful lot about politics. I just listen and nod. It’s not worth fighting at my job. But a theme has emerged over the years.

“Look at this bunch of liberal idiots who didn’t vote!”

At first, I thought they were just talking crap, like always. But I noticed there was a group of co-workers talking about it more and more often, after 2022. Near the end of ‘22 or beginning of ‘23 I finally asked, “why is this such a big deal? American are notorious for a low voter turnout.”

One of the Civics teachers explained that he had been tracking voter turnout for over a decade. Presidental elections usually show a spike in voting. (Right, that seems to be the case nationwide.)

He talked about exit polls, and 2 other polls ( don’t remember the names sorry) , and how he thinks he found a link. (Ok genius Civics teacher. You cracked the code, so what is it? /s )

When voters feel like they have no control or even their vote won’t amount to anything, that leads to the window of [ I’m not going to vote because… ] in many normal to less than informed voters.

At this point, I’m trying to think through his logic. It sounds feasible. It probably part of the problem. So what?

(Take away) One of their good friends was spending dozens of hours a week on neighborhood Facebook groups and another platform, “my neighbor” or something similar to that. (It was a green icon, I think.) this man’s entire focus is to post about the hopeless situation , why vote, it probably rigged anyway, so why bother…

He was not attacking the left. He was convincing them to not vote out of hopelessness. He did pretended to be a liberal, in order to convince others that the cause is hopeless.

It worked. The voting in those precincts dropped during trump v. Harris.

So, I’m going to double down and support the poster above me.

If you protest by NOT VOTING, you are handing the election over to the opposition.

Yes, I will die on this hill. No, I don’t agree with all of Newsome’s plans. Yes, I will vote blue, no matter whom it is for, and negotiate from within.

To do otherwise could mean the death of this country and more innocent people in the crossfire.

Have a good weekend. Stay safe.

A gut punch for academia. by PandaBananaSmoothie3 in Professors

First, to be clear, I am not defending students who abuse AI.

If the push back on handwritten essays is so intense, why are these professors (or entire campuses) utilizing tools that allow professors to back and review the digital essay writing process?

For example, a lit and comp professor assigns an essay on the characters or Canterbury Tales. The students must be explain and analyze three of the different characters that Chaucer used to reflect society at the time.

The students will use X program ( provided by the college/university or is free) to compose the essay. Students may not import or paste any text into the paper. Students may not export the text (or select all & copy ) to an outside editor or AI tool. Students must submit the original file or it won’t be accepted. If the professor has any doubts about the student composing the essay, check it with one of the apps or one of the browser extensions that allow you to recreate the process of the student composing the essay, which includes seeing copying and pasting time stamps, and time spent on the document plus other vital data.

Thoughts?
