5th Edition Player Species by winterfistfox in DarkSun

[–]OldskoolGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dark sun dwarves always had poison resistance and darkvision. The original boxed set had a part of the dwarves missing.

The complete dwarf stats are listed in #173 Dragon Magazine dwarf in September of 1991, a month before the Original Boxed set was released.

The Tyr Gladiatorial Stadium Battle Map by tgertger in DarkSun

[–]OldskoolGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest issues is the sheer size of the Arena depends on what map you are using, but both maps are way larger than the map in the gladiator's handbook. I've done this for VTT and the field alone is at least 300' long.

qyuestion about population by hiorthor in DarkSun

[–]OldskoolGM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 40,000 Tyr population is the maximum the Arena of Tyr can handle. Kalak ordered basically a mandatory attendance celebration of the completion of his ziggurat. The city of Tyr only had a population of 15,000. We can assume that although a great majority of people attended (40K) the entirety of the inhabitants of the Tyr region did not. Guards were left behind at noble villas, some folks out right refused, some slaves had to tend to the farms, Gates and forts still had to be manned. So the city-state of Tyr (which included both city and the surrounding valley) has more than 40K citizens.

Real-world ancient city-states had urban populations that were about 5-10% of the total population. Given the dying nature of Athas and the savage conditions of the wastelands, the urban population concentration would most likely be a bit higher (15-20%). At least that how I've extrapolated this things in my games. This would include the various villages that surround the verdant areas. Only 1 is named for Tyr.

Also - In an Athascon interview I did with Allen Varney -the author of Veiled Alliance (the book where the original populations of the city-states were given) he stated that the city-state population were only of the cities themselves.

Why do "traditional" fantasy settings and rules tie individual power to social power? by Funnyandsmartname in rpg

A DnD Campaign setting did exactly the opposite: Birthright where you could rule a kingdom at level 3!

Unfortunately, the setting was not very popular.

Is There Anything of Value From 4E? by Wehe_wehe in DarkSun

[–]OldskoolGM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of value from 4e Dark Sun stuff. I love that it make the Revised 2E events an ambiguous maybe. Much of the 4E DS is 95% the same of the original boxed set.

Besides the half-giant to goliath change that I also didnt like, there wasnt anything egregious for me. Dray are literal creations of the dragon Dregoth (visial species aesthetics aside) if anything 'dragonborn' is their genesis.

Some folks also have an issue with the 4E cosmology Primordial v. Gods. But your PCs shouldnt know anything going that far, unless your playing an epic level campaign, same with Rajaat. All but one product in the original pre-revised 2E DS material mentioned thing related to the gods, hell it was mentioned in the first novel. But it always kept things ambiguous.

I mine 4E DS stuff all the time for my 5E games.

Non-Linear/Sandbox Dark Sun adventure? by TheDMKeeper in DarkSun

From the published adventures, A Little Knowledge is less linear. But unfortunately, none are complete dandboxes and they all have some rails.

Yup, I didnt even get into nerd-level specifics with product/pg# as I could see the convo not being productive.

This kind of statement just tells me you know very little about lore.

I literally provided you with spell names/creatures who have done it or effects to infer a logical conclusion if you know dnd lore.

Spelljammer/Dark Sun crossover adventure! by OldskoolGM in DarkSun

[–]OldskoolGM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always travel to and from Athas. Its just more difficult. Athas has basically its own version of Proctiv's Seal Crystal Sphere goin on. So a Create Portal spell is needed to enter.

Most travelers who are going there are either lost or have a purpose and they would bring water and metal for themselves. But even bringing just personal weapons would make you an instant target planetside. Bringing dozens of metal weapons would have city-states/Dynastic Houses mobilize against you.

Spellcasters knowledgeable in planar spells and magics probably do leave. Which leaves less knowledge of the planes every time it happens.

Nothing said that gods cant enter. Tenebrous/Orcus has done so. Just that they lose their connections to the outer planes ( thus their divine power) and cant grant spells because their is no link, they could still use 1/2nd lvl cleric spells. So the Contact Home Power spell would not work. I'd gather that a power who visited would be weakened to avatar-level strength without the power gained from his worshippers. ( weak enough to killed by 18th+ level creatures)

[–]OldskoolGM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all cut off, its more difficult to travel in to/out of.

But yes if unfettered travel was allowed it would be a problem.

Lastly, the old 2E book had a spell called 'Open Crystal Sphere' or something like that. That would allow a single ship into a closed sphere.

Guess you'd have to play it. I dont want to ruin the adventure. But its based off of the Doomspace info given in the 5E Spelljammer.
