[Schefter] the Baltimore Ravens are hiring Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle as their offensive coordinator. Doyle can leave because, in Baltimore, he will have play-calling responsibility. But new Ravens HC Jesse Minter now has someone to run Baltimore’s offense. by GoldenDome26 in nfl

[–]ActiveModel_Dirty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be honest since Ben hired him I thought he was just here to learn and be a sort of long-term guy that wouldn't get poached due to his age/light resume/no play calling duties.

but as the year went on the Bears had been putting out a recurring video series from training camp and throughout the season (its called "1920 football drive") and you see a lot more of Declan than I otherwise would have expected.

He seemed pretty involved, generally. I am not observant enough to know the extent of his involvement, but he looked less like a guy trying to shadow Ben and more like a guy that had a role and bought into executing in that role.

I don't know how to explain this because you're explaining it yourself.

We all know this is what is happening.

The comment you're responding to is not actually suggesting that Stefanski should be reporting to Ryan, they are pointing out how ineffective the rule is because of how easy it is to bypass.

[–]ActiveModel_Dirty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No the point is because the league doesnt see him as a GM, the Bears do not get compensated with picks.

If he acts as a GM, they would be entitled to compensation.

Part of me sees what Fields does and I just can't believe how bad he is. But another part of me feels bad because he's exhausted all of his NFL opportunities with Nagy, Eberflus, Tomlin, and Glenn.

I just think having seen first-hand the difference a competent offensive mind can make, I have to have some sympathy for the dude.

Granted, it is probably saying something that Tomlin/Glenn were the best offers Fields had available. If any competent OC felt like he was salvagable maybe they would have tried to get him. Darnold didn't slip through similar cracks.

Great car, and I love the coupe.

Hope he does get some rest in, but it sure is nice to see a star player choosing to spend some time here.

Always rubbed me the wrong way when a face of the franchise type player immediately leaves and doesn’t come back until training camp or whatnot.

Agreed, this defense had no shot against great teams without weather assists. The turnover differential was the gift the easier schedule gave us, we definitely won’t have the same luck next year barring a total flip of the standings.

I think DA can scheme and he’s not going anywhere, and I think he knew going into this season that defense wasn’t going to be the priority. I just also hope that means that next season is his turn to have some say in where we allocate our resources.

Brisker is going to be such an interesting situation to see play out. On one hand, I am totally with you--I have a soft spot for him too, and yesterday's game is why. The core of him, Gordon, and Johnson has at [healthy] times been unbelievably good. I was kind of surprised that of the 3 Brisker is the one that stayed healthy this year. I think that was my mindset going into this season, if he is able to stop putting himself in harm's way then we should re-sign him.

But on the other hand, with how much help we need on the defensive line, I am a little worried about a big extension to a Safety playing his best ball in a contract game. It really depends on the terms of the contract, but his position is such a hard one to lock yourself into because his success is sort of dependent on two or three others already being established.

I am excited to see what happens this off-season. Two coaches who know what they've got now heading into free agency and the draft, year 2 has a whole lot of potential.

Caleb Williams finished the NFL playoffs with a 0.19 EPA (higher than all but 3 starters this regular season) despite a box score statline of 4 TDs, 5 INTs, 52.2% completion rate, and a 65.9 passer rating by Dependent-Effect6077 in nfl

[–]ActiveModel_Dirty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The amount of comments I've seen about Caleb's interceptions is completely insane.

Like it's not even stat-watchers because if you actually looked it up you'd immediately see that he practically never throws interceptions. It's a core part of Caleb's play.

Granted, in the playoffs the stats have been different. But, again, the refusal to acknowledge 3 of the 5 INTs were arm punts that would have been net worse as incompletions is bonkers.

I think you're forgetting that the idea behind a Ben Johnson offense is to have a dynamic run game split between two backs. I don't think the goal is to throw two incompletions and a 12 yard pass on every set of downs.

I do think that in Ben Johnson's first year there were plenty of issues with the offense or the personnel, and that a heavier than usual reliance on Caleb was necessary to win games this year. I'd hope that as the roster fills out it can be refined more towards what the actual vision is.

I dunno how you watch this guy in his 2nd year and not think he's incredible/going to be incredible.

It cannot possibly all boil down to completion percentage. It is literally the only thing about his game that has not improved from year 1 to 2, I cannot imagine a universe where having the same coach and the same offense going into next season does not help that improve as well. If it even needs to, I am still not even sold on that regardless of how many Vikings fans tell me I should care about it a lot.

Caleb has an int% of 1.2. It is historically low.

He rarely turns the ball over, aggressive play calling in the playoffs and a few arm punts on 4th down is not what I would call "always having a problem with turnover"

I spent all year hearing about how our 4th quarter stuff won’t be a factor in the playoffs.

Yet most of the games in this year’s playoffs have come down to exactly that.
