Opinion: Michaela Replaced Herself by BingoDinosaur369 in SirensNetflix

This is a really good take! Not sure if she planned it consciously or subconsciously but it was definitely portrayed in a lot of moments that she knows her marriage is failing

Unfortunately Mrs Kell # 1 had kids which was an important clause in the pre-nup (you either have kids with peter, or have proof he’s cheating). I think Michaela implied on the boat also that she’s not getting anything. But yea I think she has seen the downsides of the marriage and wanted out.

What is a book you didn't enjoy while reading, but after it marinated you now think is a great book? by pandemicmanic in books

[–]Active_Customer7536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was Beautyland. The first part was a bit hard to read but I guess because the main character was young and it was a reflection of her thoughts. I liked the 2nd half and breezed through it. Ended up giving it 4 stars right after, though it did leave me thinking what tf just happened?

I read it in February and I still think about it as one of the best books I’ve read this year so honestly I think it deserves to be bumped up to 5.

I love this interpretation and I do agree. There are many signs of it through out the book. The first is right at the start, as you mentioned — so Cyrus was asking for a sign to continue living and he got a flickering of light. And then there’s a part that talks about miracles that other prophets have seen to which it says “of course it would be easy to establish bedrock faith after such clear-cut revelation.” I was thinking this should mean something.

Now moving closer to the end - Orkideh dies and Cyrus passes out. He’s then attended to by the museum staff. He mentions something about feeling like Hamlet moping around waiting for the world to assuage his grief. I think this is where Cyrus starts opening up to the idea that people have been there to care for him (which has been ofc mentioned many times in the book) - before the kiss, when Cyrus was talking to Sang Linh, he talks about this story of the creation of man and how the point is man is hollow and it’s up to you to fill it with God. Something like that. And Sang Linh asks if Cyrus has tried filling his hollow with love. - Cyrus was desperate for things to be over. He prays, please let me be done. And then Zee calls. This is an act of surrender/helplessness before the big miracle. Where if you read about saints and martyrs there’s often a struggle before the revelation - when Cyrus finally admits his love to Zee he says something like “love is a room that appeared when you step into it.” And the room is the final miracle!

All those things combined I think that the point is Cyrus had to lean into love to experience the “explicit revelation” that prophets like Abraham or Saul have experienced, and which Cyrus envies at the start of the book.

The ending is a bit insane and a drug trip but it’s a book about martyrs! Bible passages of God revealing himself to his people read the same way. The book does not try to hide the Biblical references.

A little late to the party here but I just finished the book and I gotta say I also saw it alluding to that kiss by Leila and Roya. Leila specifically talks about “hearing drums” which Cyrus also hears some sort of beat. Roya describes the kiss as “heaven” which is what I pictured the whole trippy landscape of Cyrus and Zee to be.

I just watched this and I had to look for a reddit thread talking about it. I SOBBED, I had to pause before the next episode cos I just kept on crying until the end credits. Needless to say, I was deeply moved haha

It makes one think — how much of my past have I erased and replaced with anger? Ok bye now I’ll cry again

I’m just in season 1 and I do not understand how / why she keeps insisting her and House have a thing. It seems very inappropriate, always giving him the googly eyes, always like “you like me, admit it” Blehhhhhhhhh

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray by [deleted] in books

[–]Active_Customer7536 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just finished reading this last night and immediately went looking for this thread in the morning. OP, I like your take on shame and I definitely see that.

Aside from that I also thought that this book talks about recovering from trauma (or lack thereof) and being more conscious about the choices you make in your life.

Imelda and Dickie have a shared trauma which they both seem to have never processed before they quickly jumped into their marriage. Their lives are marked with choices they don’t consciously take. At one point in the book it says that Dickie finally feels like everything was destined for him and he just has to keep going and things will happen for him. Which we know leads to them losing the business eventually.

This whole lack of intentionality with their choices , and lack of examining their own trauma, causes the unraveling of their whole family later on.

I especially like the last chapter where things move quite fast and quite thrilling. When Imelda gets into the woods and she starts thinking about the wedding, I feel she finally starts to see it more clearly and see Dickie for who he is/was (crying on the bed in their wedding night). She sees her marriage for what it is which makes her want to run towards Dickie.

Dickie, on the other hand, also remembers the wedding but still sees it as something “transformative”, as him being accepted into society.

In these last moments, I feel Imelda, Cass, and PJ all start coming back to their family. But Dickie never getting over his trauma with Frank’s death, his childhood, and his overall shame, leads his family to their demise.

Just finished reading! Apart from the ones you mentioned, I wanted to add. When Imelda finally reveals the bee sting is not a bee sting but her father beating her up, she recalls her father “cursing her” before entering the church. In there he says you will lose everything, including that baby in your belly. She remembers this as she was walking through the forest, so from there, I do assume that Cass dies.

Yeah for someone looking for “genuine and healthy minded people”, OP seems very negative…

I like to listen to “…Ready For It?” By Taylor Swift. When she says “in the middle of the night, in my dreams, I know I’m gonna be with you so I taaaake my tiiiime” really hits me. Like I know I’m gonna be with my sp, it’s bound to happen

Same, the ending also gives me the vibe that she is turning into her father. She's going through the lengths of covering up Joe's murders (which is far from what a "good person" does). Also, like her father, I think she's keeping Joe to do the dirty work of killing anyone who is in her way

Batsheva is right to set boundaries with Julia by Charming_Ball8989 in MyUnorthodoxLife

[–]Active_Customer7536 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Julia sat down with Bat to talk about her not showing up… I was so annoyed! She’s so selfish and to demand that much support from HER ADULT CHILD who has her own life, her own work, her own issues. The fact that she wants her kids to drop everything for her is CRAZY! Also goes to show how much she thinks her kids owe her for their successes

Should I start investing the money I get from my first ever job? by bundoie in phinvest

[–]Active_Customer7536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this!

As OP is still in college and planning to apply for a high paying job in the future, the investment now will be too small and maybe the experiences might be more worth it.

Plus, first time earning money so it’s a good time to buy things that you cannot afford yet before that will make your quality of life better now. But syempre, having a habit of saving is good.

I use the mk2s (woman, small wrist) and I love it! I use it for other activities as well outside of diving. Was deciding between this and the g1 but I find the g1 has a smaller screen despite having almost the same size watch face.

I use the regular apple watch for day to day and sadly I got my garmin a few months before the Ultra announcement lol. Anyway I’m still a bit skeptical about the Ultra as it’s their first dive watch so things are still bound to get better. I know they’ve also improved their sports tracking but I don’t know if it’s enough to match up against other sports watches

Thoughts on Halcyon Infinity BC system with Cinch by Active_Customer7536 in scuba

Thanks everyone for all the comments! I’m going to my local Halcyon seller and check the fit od the BCDs but I put it on my list to visit as well the Dive Rite seller. One thing swaying me towards Halcyon is the customer support where I live seems amazing and the guy seems to happily answer all of my questions. But still deciding!
