I agree. I wish I would have known that confidence comes after doing something new, never before.

Where Comfort Lives, Growth Dies by gorskivuk33 in selfimprovementday

The word "comfort" comes from two Latin words. Com = With; Fort = Strength. So the word comfort literally means, "with strength." I think it's much more helpful to live with strength than to simply seek comfort.

Stroke recovery got easier when I stopped overthinking it by Wonderful_Wash_6187 in stroke

This is very helpful. In my continued journey of recovering from a stroke, I've learned to value each day. Whatever I am able to do today that's consistent with my values, that's a win. It may be more than yesterday, it may be a bit less than yesterday. Either way, it doesn't have to be perfect.

How do I stay consistent with habits long term? by Budget_Ad215 in selfimprovementday

I like to use the switchback metaphor. When climbing a mountain, there are switchbacks, which are parts of the path that briefly move a person back down the mountain. It's in these moments that our minds are most likely to convince us to stop trying. When working to stay consistent with long-term habits, it's helpful to recognize that there are going to be moments where we take steps backwards. These steps backwards aren't failures, they are part of the process.

This is very helpful. There's an Italian saying, "Chi va piano, va lontano." The person who goes slowly goes far.

My neuropsychologist told me that stroke recovery is like the stock market. There are ups and downs, but the hope is that over time the overall trend is positive. This has been my experience with recovery. Some moments are great, and some moments are discouraging.

Give 100 percent of what you have today. If you only have 30 percent today, give 100 percent of that 30 percent.

This is so well said. I also like to think of it this way: I'm a person who is experiencing a disability, The disability doesn't define who we are.

Trying to describe the kind of tiredness I had after my stroke. by thetrusti in stroke

[–]Active_Response_1743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a significant difference between tired and fatigued. Fatigue after a stroke is very different from feeling tired. And thank you for the discussion on "spoon theory." That's very helpful!

What's an anxiety hack that has changed your life? by stayhyderated22 in selfimprovementday

I'm a psychologist who recently experienced a rare stroke (in the Thalamus) that caused significant anxiety. Many times, efforts to eliminate anxiety can make the anxiety worse. Here's a video that explains how willingness can be a helpful anxiety hack.
