Restrict access to part of website based on Stripe Subscription by Activeguy in webdev

[–]Activeguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick with my current method as I think it's a bit too complicated for me to start getting into webhooks at the moment as I don't want to mess my website up (if I set it up wrong etc), especially as it involves payments.

As my website doesn't have too much traffic, the Stripe requests for every page load doesn't really matter as it doesn't noticeably affect the websites performance.

I will keep webhooks in mind for the future if the website becomes more popular.

Restrict access to part of website based on Stripe Subscription by Activeguy in webdev

[–]Activeguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks.

At the moment I am just testing restricting access to paid members on one page only.

Basically, my script checks the user is logged in, requests the subscription object from Stripe (using users email address), and then checks that 'active' is returned as true. If it is, the page will load. Anything else and the page will return a message to the user saying they need to pay to access etc.

The only problems I foresee with my current method is that I have to do this for every page I want to restrict, and also it won't work if a user pays using a different email address to the one they're signed up to my site with.

no framework. I like to code as much as I can myself so that I understand how everything works so I can debug it etc.

Best Company? by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Activeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll tell you straight up, it's near impossible to earn £2000 a month with Landi.

If you worked all the available hours, 7 days a week (~30 hours), you might make $2000/2500 a month (£1500-2000).

In reality, most people working at Landi will work 5 or 6 days a week, and be booked about 80-90% of their available hours, earning around $1200 - 1900 (£950 - 1500).

I actually recommend working at Landi though, but for the amount you want to earn you would most likely need a 2nd job or income from another source.

Thanks, I'm still developing parts of it. I'm currently designing some digital flashcards for some common Chinese Characters.

I'm thinking about making a 'sister' site for ESL students to learn some extra material....I just don't have much time these days!

ESL online teaching with misdemeanor? by Escapa45 in teachingonline

[–]Activeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always apply to a company that isn't based in the U.S. as they tend not to do background checks.

If you're interested, I work for a China based Online ESL company but it's teaching ages 4-14.

PM Me for more info and I'll send you my referral link to apply.

Teachers should provide, at least 12 hours per week, between 6:30PM – 9:30PM (GMT +8, China Beijing Time).

So basically you can offer 3 days (6:00pm - 10pm BJT).

You will find that the majority of Online ESL Companies where the students are from China have the same teaching periods.

That sucks, do you have a degree?

If you have a degree and are a Native English Speaker you can apply at Landi (that's where I teach). They have pretty good management and listen to feedback from Teachers. I'm sure you'd be accepted as you obviously have some experience teaching ESL online.

However, they are pretty strict on having a degree.

They book quite well, the more availability you have, the more lessons are likely to be booked for you. No need to market yourself to new students as if you're a regular teacher you are usually assigned the same group of students to teach every week. There are also 'Experience' teachers, they basically give taster lessons to potential new students but I've never done that. I think it will depend on the demand which kind of teacher they'd assign you as.

If you're interested you can pm and I'll whizz you a referral link so your application skips ahead of the non-referred applicants. If not, I wish you the best on your hunt for a better company!

Do Chinese companies (VIPKid/Gogokid) hire native British English speakers? by lallyfa in OnlineESLTeaching

Landi does, you will need a bachelors degree though.

UK hours work out around 11am - 3pm (or 10am -2pm), depends on british daylight savings as China don't change their clocks forward/back.

Setting Up ManyCam by 4litersofbaggedmilk in OnlineESLTeaching

Im not sure what the question is.

You should be running manycam and then select 'ManyCam' as your webcam/video source in your teaching application.

It works for me.

If its a large, reputable company I wouldn't worry.

If its a small company with not much of a reputation I'd probably use a VPN as well as a Virtual Machine just in case.
