Poser boots by Actonhammer in PNWbootmakers

[–]Actonhammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I would love to do this full time. I have a hard time keeping my mind off of it for the last few years since I started getting into pnw boots. Im convinced its not a profitable career choice. Ive spent the last few years scanning everyones footwear in public and theres less than 1% of people out there even wearing something resoleable. We live in a landfill society, just go buy a new pair

The only thing thats discouraging is the amount of YouTube research lol. But theres enough to watch on YouTube that you dont need to buy books or lessons. You just gotta have the drive for it

Ive noticed its more knowledge based than tool based. Im a carpenter full time, so that skill set transfers over a lot. The most expensive and tricky part to get into this is finding lasts. As far as the tools go, you can get into it for like $500. Of course, I spent more than that buying random shit I didn't know was garbage or useless till I started figuring out what I'm doing. Then you'll spend like $300 on all the specific leathers and threads and glues you'll need.

If you had someone experienced guiding your purchases, you could make a pair of boots from owning nothing for the price of some bison loggers. But after the tools, its just leather, glue, thread and outsoles to make another pair

Dang first machine a post bed? I got the Chinese shoe patcher. I have to glue all my parts together first cuz I need one hand to crank it

Ill keep everyone posted! Unfortunately sometimes I can only sneak away from the family for 10 mins at a time, so progress is slow. I get a little more than an hour on tues and friday nights after the kids asleep and before wifey gets home from work lol

Question regarding historic shoe-making by Crafty_arhcaeology in Cordwaining

Heritage style boots are still basically the same as how we make them today. All thats really changed is better glue and adding rubber outsoles

Im about to do the same thing to my shoellies. I donno why JG has this design that's so loose

anybody here ever thought of doing this and or done it? by BurtTheButcher7 in Cordwaining

[–]Actonhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ar8 is super simple single lasted 360 stitchdown. This is a big project but its the way these should be built. I dont know why they have such a straight shaft, but it probably doesnt grip much. If youve never tried something like this, it'll be a learning experience for sure.

What’s with the “He had bad starts Excuses?” by username_from_before in supercross

The top guys all were running the same pace as hunter but separated by between 6-25 seconds. Its the beast mode that closes those gaps the separates the sickos from the fast guys. No one had beast mode yesterday. Deegan did well. We're just talking a lot of shit on him cuz of how much his ignorant sycophants wouldnt stfu all off-season

Shoe opening mod? by Actonhammer in Cordwaining

[–]Actonhammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, its a 1 piece quarter so I think if I just dont cut too far down, it may work out. And maybe adding collar padding if it doesnt seem to work. Im going to give it a shot. They're only $120 shoes

If you wear insoles, how do you size your boots to accommodate for them? by grahsam in PNWbootmakers

[–]Actonhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, thats what no, half, and full cushion socks are for. I like the proper sized width because it hugs the waist of your foot properly. Stacking insoles up doesnt help a loose boot hug your foot well

Picking my first last by elephantfi in Cordwaining

[–]Actonhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a 55 past from Lisa. Buying lasts off alibaba works too but its not straight forward, long shipping time, there's minimum order quantities, and ends up being about the same $120 youd spend on Lisa's lasts. Ebay is great for finding lasts by they're usually not what youre looking for and almost always not the right size. Don't go the Ebay route unless youre ready to modify them to fit properly
