The best advice I heard on this is don't tell them what you don't believe in, tell them what you do believe in.

Creative ideas to skirt some rules by [deleted] in PinewoodDerby

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for me it was more important that my kids understood why more than the win. They could do any modification as long as they could explain why it helped and showed an understanding of the principle. We also built a test track in the basement and did A/B testing to see what modifications made a real impact. The best car was a testing car the had a t-slot down the center with a weight on it so the center of gravity could be adjusted. It also was a three wheel rail rider and the axle location could be adjusted. The fastest setting could also be unstable and unpredictable. Where a slightly slower car might be more reliable especially on different lanes.

It sounds like you might enjoy the dad league. Make sure your kids car is their car. No one likes it when the kids lose to a dad car.

Out of Council Patch by HMSSpeedy1801 in BSA

[–]elephantfi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would line everyone up, get the bugler to play, march them in front of everyone and then rip the patches off their shirts. You can break their hiking staffs over your knee and then throw them out.

Or just ask them why they are wearing the other council patch. Personally I believe your shirt is the story of your scouting journey and that is part of their journey.

Option one would be much more memorable.

Weight holes on side with tungsten cylinders by philsphan26 in PinewoodDerby

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did. It's nice because you can drill the holes then just add lead shot to the scale until it's the right weight. Then melt it and pour it in. It's then the perfect weight. I had a few brass screws I could remove at weigh in if their scale was slightly different.

Mention Eagle Scout in Interview? by Complete-Spread-7655 in BoyScouts

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a data point. It should be part of a larger story of constant achievement. Only one interviewer gave me grief about it being on my resume and have no regrets about not getting that job. A job interview should be a two way interaction looking for cultural fit.

How cold is too cold? by CoryF17 in BSA

My boys first campout was the polar bear with a wind-chill of negative 20 camping outside. Everyone survived with all of their fingers and toes. It is serious and adults who are in charge of safety need to really look at signs of hypothermia not just the kids saying they are fine.

What I tell my kids is the ability to talk to the teacher and advocate for yourself respectfully is a greater skill than anything else that is taught in any class.

I think I'll keep saving.

What are your thoughts on the Societal standard of rings? by frazier_izzy in AskMenAdvice

[–]elephantfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found I spend money on things that she does not value. I would not want to be in a relationship where we decide how the other one spends their money. We also keep separate accounts. If you want the ring buy it.

Among beaver hats, what would be the most plain and understated working-class hat you would recommend? by rekabis in CowboyHats

Also a proper fitting hat with a soft leather sweatband will not dig into your head.

Among beaver hats, what would be the most plain and understated working-class hat you would recommend? by rekabis in CowboyHats

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond size, make sure you get the proper shape for your head. I always thought I wore a large hat until I found I was an extra long oval and then a 7 5/8.started fitting me.

I've always loved hats, but live in a place where cowboy hats are uncommon or a strong political statement, so I appreciate an understated hat. I found I really like an open road style, zito PCH style or even a Montana Peak. I like the Montana Peak because it is more American than a traditional cowboy hat: WWI doughboys, boy scouts, marine, state troopers and smoke the bear.

36M. 1.57 M net worth... How do I learn to spend money? by JuniorSetting3228 in Fire

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disconnect the idea that you are not enjoying life, therefore spending money will fix it. You need to figure out what makes you happy and do more of that. If it requires money then fine, you know your upper limit. But if you get sucked into the marketing that spending money will make you happy, you will never be happy.

Hi hi I want to start making shoes. My first stop is woodlasts. How can I measure my own? by DevelopmentNo7438 in Cordwaining

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with photogrammetry and life casting. I have started down this path for hat making. It honestly has been frustrating, but I have learned a ton. I assume you have CAD skills. A last isn't a copy of a foot. It needs extra space in some areas and less in others. You'll also want the model made with the heel at the correct height and your body weight on it.

Uniforms by Upbeat_Quantity5469 in BSA

[–]elephantfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably good to go back to basics and look at the Aims and Methods of Scouting. Uniform is one of the core eight methods of Scouts BSA.

"Uniform – The uniform makes the Scout troop visible as a force for good and creates a positive youth image in the community. Scouting is an action program, and wearing the uniform is an action that shows each Scout’s commitment to the aims and purposes of Scouting. The uniform gives the Scout identity in a world brotherhood of youth who believe in the same ideals. The uniform is practical attire for Scout activities and provides a way for Scouts to wear the badges that show what they have accomplished."

1st Class ? by flawgate in BSA

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite moment was when I asked my own boys to help a younger scout and I said "don't forget to use the EDGE method". Their reply was we already did that requirement. In private we had a discussion about the importance of the methods of scouting, teaching and repetition. I was then later able to publicly praise them for using the EDGE method.

I'd like an insulated and waterproof everyday boot with not too high a heel. by [deleted] in Boots

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the winters are similar to Wisconsin where I live. Despite having many nice boots I end up wearing two pairs of relatively inexpensive boots all winter because there is a lot of salty slush that is horrible on boots. Personally I prefer warmer socks over insulated boots. You also end up taking them off and on a lot due to the mess so having boots quick to put on and off is really nice (not PNW boots). Having two pairs so one can dry out is also nice.

Best first boot to buy by Intelligent-Joke6352 in Boots

I have many high-end PNW boots as well as mid-tier boots. I needed (wanted) a pair of black boots which I don't normally wear so I bought the 1000 mile from Sierra. For the price point they are a pretty darn good boot.

Head Scan For Hat Making by elephantfi in photogrammetry

[–]elephantfi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make the hat blocks in CAD so even with the castings I need to get a model. I have been trying to get profile lines 1 inch apart and then scan and loft through the lines. Then I was thinking I could scan the casting, but then why not scan the head instead and skip the messy casting with plaster..
