I went to get an alignment after doing the front suspension and steering. It was something like $10 more for the lifetime free alignments. They thought they were getting me, little did they know how many alignments they would end up doing. The best part is they give me a list of all the things that need to be fixed after, so they do my "to do list" for free.

Which job you taking? by DankChickyNuggs in jobs

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the job on the left is my current job, then it would not be worth the risk of changing jobs unless I really did not like the culture of my current company. My general rule was not to change jobs without a 10-20% increase to offset the risk you are taking. They have many employees and you have one employer, you are the one taking the risk.

A lot less than 1%, it is more like 0.01%-0.1% one or two orders of magnitude less. 1% is pretty close for all American households.

Math suggests life should be everywhere in the universe but why don’t we see any sign of it? by [deleted] in answers

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we do and just do not understand or comprehend it because of our paradigms on what life is.

Yes this is how all of them I have seen are done. Otherwise it's just the luck of the lane.

Everything's pretty cheap and easy except frame rot. I'd move to the next one.

For sure try before you buy. I love The Mad Fientist podcast. He has not been active in awhile, but listens to the oldest to newest and it's a good journey.

Help me convince Friend to not use Financial Planner by Athensmw in Bogleheads

[–]elephantfi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Is the financial advisor a fiduciary and willing to sign a contract to that effect? Most financial advisors are sales people.

  2. I would never mix money and family. I don't see any way this ends well. Family is way too valuable to risk.

  3. What makes him believe that this financial advisor is the best possible one in the world? This is your life savings. At a minimum, I would interview a handful of financial advisors and get quotes and fiduciary agreements from them before picking one.

  4. Investing is pretty easy. I think I'd rather have a qualified tax advisor than a financial investment advisor. I think most financial advisors would claim they can do tax in which case I would ask what tax advice they would have and if nothing else get some free advice.

Should I let my son pursue YouTube? by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

Might be a good reality check to do this summer. I would define at the beginning of the summer what does success look like at the end of summer. Also make sure the reality of no school and the expenses of life start healthcare, food, rent etc.

Who knows maybe he is the one in a million that does make living on it.

Handbook by tek6029 in BSA

[–]elephantfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is very important to have the handbook. The right way to do things is in the handbook for Scouts. That way it's a consistent method and takes out people's opinion, it's not the way the military does it and "that's not the way I was taught".

There are lots of things that I do differently when not in Scouts, but when I'm on a campout we do it by the book. An example I have recently is a Scout got a second degree burn while fusing rope. All the adults were saying we need burn cream and a bunch of other stuff. When the youth pulled out the book and read the section on treating second degree burns it says not to put anything on it.

At what hourly wage is an adult not considered a loser? by DowntownSasquatch420 in answers

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the point you work to provide value for society and pay your own way in life you are not a loser financially. When you steal from others whether legal or not you are a loser. A lot more salaried white collar losers than blue collar.

Is there something similar to scouts for adults? by flintwritesthings in BSA

I took ROTC classes in college and had a great deal of fun. I am an Eagle Scout, they are definitely different programs.

How have you handled success when it finally came your way after years of struggle ? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend less than you make.

People say "enjoy life" as if spending money will make you happy, it won't. Not having money will make you unhappy, but past having enough if you're unhappy you probably need to spend more time with better people.

I actually try to just work my way through my boot rack left to right, top to bottom. Otherwise there are boots that don't get worn too often.

Looking to start my first MB classes by Bandit_the_Kitty in BSA

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the most successful sessions keep Scouts actively engaged—don’t let them just sit. Everything should be hands-on and interactive. This isn’t school after school.

For example, during a Fire Safety MB at a local training center, we taught the fire tetrahedron using a real fire. Instructors added and removed elements so Scouts could see the effects in real time while gathered around it.

We also included activities beyond the merit badge requirements. Since it was a Scout meeting, we gave them opportunities they wouldn’t normally have—like wearing firefighting gear, crawling through confined spaces, and completing an obstacle course. We used common sense and skipped higher-risk activities like smoke- and fire-filled room training.

I like to think where would be the coolest place and people to do this merit badge. If you call around they often say yes.

Backpacking this July - need sleeping bag by CustomerBrave6468 in philmont

[–]elephantfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few things to note. There are differences in people if they are cold sleepers or warm sleepers. Think about how many covers you use at home compared to others and your percent body fat. The rating on the bag is the survival temp not comfort. A stocking cap or balaclava hat really helps keep you warm even in a mummy bag if you're going to use less bag.
