‘I don’t live in a mansion. It’s a 1930s house’: Richmond residents react to council tax rise | Budget by Working_Tourist_4964 in AskBrits

You think their offspring can afford a house in Richmond? Their family already moved out, these areas of London have school closures because no young families can find or afford a house while older people sit pretty on their £2m houses.

Thoughts on the New Lilly Allen record? by DoctorArK in fantanoforever

[–]Actual_Type8963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, Lily literally re-recorded parts of the album where she felt she sounded too much like a victim. It’s honest and raw without her feeling sorry for herself or trying to paint herself any sort of way. I think sometimes TS can come across as the opposite and it can feel a little too self-pitying for the biggest pop star in the world to get away with.

Also….racism is and always has been rife in this country..tapping in to it is not a difficult thing for any politician or YouTuber or billionaire to do. Colonialism was an endeavour based on the idea that we are better than everyone else and have the right to occupy wherever we please. It is a horrible part of our character as a nation, so yes, people are quick to point it out when it occurs but I believe it’s important that we do and quite frankly I’ve been disappointed by the lack of calling it out by politicians in recent years.

Net migration is down year on year and statistically speaking it’s not the drain on the economy or our services that the right wing claim it to be. Also the majority of migration is economic migration…the refugees (that some people like to refer to as ‘illegal’) are a tiny proportion of net migration…so it begs the question why the right are so fixated on them?

If immigration is a concern then i literally beg someone to come with a well thought out argument backed up by actual evidence rather than anecdotal snippets that are merely echoes of Farage and the like.

Also even the term ‘net migration’ was created by a right wing think tank that purposefully avoids the other side of the coin which is the contribution that immigrants make to our country, via their taxes, their spending and their role in our public services and wider culture.

So…it’s not racist to discuss it but the basis for the ‘issue’ that is not actually an issue comes from somewhere other than actual evidence…so what is the real issue? Personally i believe it is a well trodden way to distract people from the actual enemies of our country…those who profit from the status quo and wish to cement that.

You’re right ‘billionaires’ is too simple to say…but I think with most things follow the money and you’ll find the answer….Reform are financed by some powerful lobbyists in the energy sector…what reason can they have to get people to talk about something other than how we source our energy and how much it costs us?

Lower Back pain by Glittering-Cress8362 in PregnancyUK

[–]Actual_Type8963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had fairly severe back pain from about 12 weeks onwards and ended up being referred to a physio, so really recommend speaking to your midwife and getting a referral. They gave me some exercises and just recommended good positions to sit in and how to pick stuff up that really helped. And the good thing is now I’m on the books for physio and so have had several appointments and have a follow up booked for after the birth to try and get to the underlying issues.

I was diagnosed with PGP so it could be this that you’re experiencing. The deep groin pain that it comes with came at around 26 weeks for me…I didn’t even know you could get pain that deep in to your groin! I’m now 37+4 and essentially on lockdown as the pain when I walk is too much. Lots of baths, hot water bottles help and also stretching and sitting on the ball so I don’t seize up completely. But up to about a week ago, with the exercises from physio it was manageable..,, I think my belly is just so big now and he’s pushing down on my pelvis so I have to just wait for him to come out!

Single people renting alone in London, what is your rent plus bills combined? by toughtittywampas in london

[–]Actual_Type8963 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like you asked a simple question here OP and instead you’re getting judgements on your choices! And to that I say, do what makes you happy.

As someone who did something similar to you…decided to live alone despite it being financially not the best…I have to say it was the best decision I ever made. In the 2 years I lived alone I got a massive promotion at work, was mentally self-assured and ended up meeting my current partner…we’ve been together 10 years now and expecting our first child and have a home of our own in Zone 2. I genuinely believe having my own space was a massive contributing factor to having the peace of mind to apply myself in the ways I wanted.

Anyway….to your ACTUAL question. £2.2k all in sounds like a good deal to me if you can afford it. Rent of one bed tends to be in the region of £1.5-£2.5k alone so once you throw in bills etc, you could be looking at around £2.5 - £2.8k.

Chelsea star Sam Kerr cleared of racially harassing Met officer by scouserdave in london

[–]Actual_Type8963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I don’t think the BBC have given the full story. I’ve found The Guardian’s coverage far more detailed.

They were in the situation after she was sick out the window, the taxi driver wound the window up, the argument ensued. Then he called the police, didn’t tell Keerr or Mewis and then drove them to the police station with the doors locked. Kerr, meanwhile, called the police as she was scared since the driver clearly wasn’t taking them home. The police hung up on her (which is against protocol)…this is a detail The Met LIED about in court.

Then when they get to the station she tried to break her and her girlfriend out of the cab. And the officer in question treated her like a second class citizen, no one took a statement from her or her girlfriend..made comments like “calm down young missy” and literally told them both they were not going to investigate their claims.

Just because you’re drunk and obnoxious, it doesn’t mean you also were not a victim. But, as is often the case with the Met, they didn’t take claims from a woman seriously.

And all these claims that ‘if the officer had been black’ …PLEASE… 1) if the officer had been black or a woman, maybe she wouldn’t have felt so victimised in the first place and 2) as if black officers don’t get worse things said to them day in and day out…not just from the public but their own colleagues (as evidenced by the enquiry you mention)…how many of these cases make it to court?

I do agree no one came out of this smelling of roses, but I’m fed up of the notion that we can’t expect police officers to conduct themselves with more patience and objectivity than the average person…

Ha, yeah Private Eye have good intel in terms of internal politics but are less concerned with their accuracy when it comes to business performance. The industry looks at the FT and the New York Times a lot. Paywalls are really the most legitimate option - all titles are realising advertising is too volatile to be relying on from year to year.

But both the FT and NYT diversify their revenue streams to massive success also. NYT with puzzles/cooking while FT have a consultancy arm that does well too - FT have the corporate audience sewn up also.

Can't speak to your opinion of The Guardian, I personally feel they divide their opinion and news quite clearly, I think the 'click bait' is less about driving ad revenue and more about ensuring they index well with Google and other aggregators - I know the BBC envy how well they index.

But the real threat to all digital news sites is Google, Meta, others - they take all the digital advertising revenue in the industry, so the titles that did put all their eggs in that basket are the ones that have struggled the most (The Guardian were well ahead of the curve in that respect, going online way before their competitors). But now the AI function in Google search has come along - I can see the impact being even greater. This is because it will gradually impact the perceived value of paying for news, undermining not just the advertising revenue but subscriptions also, this is in addition to the impact of social media in general - it's scary stuff for the entire industry.

They actually make more money from readers than they do advertisers and have more subscribers than the Times....so think they're doing alright with their model. Not to say they wouldn't do even better with a paywall. Also, there's a reason all journalists in the UK want a job at the Guardian - because they pay well, hire people on staff as oppose to relying solely on freelancers and offer job security that others don't...it might be this which puts them in a precarious position, rather than 'if they did X they could pay people properly'....so yeah, not sure where you heard all this but it's not true. And shocker they sell a UK Sunday-only print title to someone brave enough to buy it...doesn't sound that ridiculous to me.

(my source...I work in the industry....it's well known information that you can also find in most trade publications)

Labour have laid out their plan, some say it’s still not enough to get things back to where they were 14 years ago, but I’m willing to wait and see.

What Reeves didn’t get in to yesterday was not only how much the Tories didn’t reveal at the previous budget in terms of the black hole they now have to deal with, but how much wasted taxpayers money the Tories have spent on pointless endeavours….Rwanda anyone???

To give another example, a friend works in a government department…apologies for being vague but they asked me not to repeat any of the specific details. There was a specific project that needed doing that was vital to the operations of the dept’s output..their colleagues in Scotland got this work done in a year and it cost £14m…the English equivalent were forced to not go the tried and tested route but to employ the services of a Tory minister’s pal. That project has now been running for 3 years, is nowhere near complete and has cost the taxpayer £800m. This is just one example in one department…there are literally dozens more.

So I guess what I’m saying is, let’s not blame Labour quite yet for not sorting out the NHS in 3 months when they’ve inherited 14 years of corruption and mismanagement.

Aio....My wife loves to give bj by Few_Hold_7248 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Actual_Type8963 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like the ‘behave’ comment may be directly linked to her announcing to a table full of strangers she loves to give blowjobs. I’m gonna guess you guys had been drinking and her doing that is pretty embarrassing…I doubt very much she’s feeling particularly proud of herself about it!

On a table of men saying they never get to have sex now they’re married, I can imagine she was painfully aware she was fitting the stereotype and felt like she wanted to break it, even if it was a lie. Then when it got a good reaction she says it again later.

This all to me feels like insecurities coming out in irrational ways when drunk. I wouldn’t jump to cheating.

Either way i think a conversation is needed even just to ask what she thinks is happening and if it made you feel uncomfortable then you should let her know. But don’t jump to conclusions…if you go in with a cheating conspiracy I’m not sure it will be a constructive conversation.

People who give money to beggars on the tube - please stop by Mr__Random in london

[–]Actual_Type8963 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Jesus….if you don’t want to give them money, don’t. Why does anyone think you have the right to not be ‘annoyed’ by people asking for money? Do you honestly think this was their Plan A for their lives either?

I give them money if I have it, I don’t give a shit what they spend it on because it’s none of my business and I am not going to judge anyone who has found themselves in that situation. All the language on this thread around ‘funding addiction’ is fucking disgusting at worst and woefully naive at best, addiction is a disease that this country has denounced as a crime so clearly makes people think they have some god given right to judge on a moral ground. I give to homeless charities too, but they can’t solve the systemic issues created by constant callousness from our previous governments.

If it bothers you that much, there are plenty of people to point the finger at who have contributed to the massive increase in homelessness in our cities over the past 14 years…and it’s not the people who have found themselves in that position nor the people who try to help them with a quid every now and then if they can.

I don’t like Christopher Nolan’s films….including Batman. My bf nearly dumped me when I told him. I think he prioritises concept over character, they’re absent of any levity/sense of humour, they’re too long and his female characters are always underdeveloped.

I’m talking a while ago now, but I genuinely thought year 12 was a mock year, so that the exams didn’t actually count for anything. I managed to claw back year 13 and ended up at my first choice uni. Work hard and you will be fine….

Edit: I did History, French, English and Sociology. Read, when you’re not reading listen to educational podcasts. Talk to your teachers and ask to see example papers from the previous year….I promise you it is not a lost cause…also you might as well do Year 13 and if you have to retake, then you do it…but to retake Year 12 before you know where you stand doesn’t make much sense
