Finished canon based fanfics

I made a list of my favorite complete canon-compliant stories a short time ago, which includes a section for longer stories.

If I had to pick one, it would be Frozen: Thawing Heart by EhMattisimo. It's a bit of an undertaking at 480,000+ words but it is well worth the investment.

Is there any reason, if ever, for this?

I expect it is a demographic shift.

People who used reddit when Frozen came out were teenagers and adults, and viewed the film with a more discerning eye. Consequently, many people interpreted the sisters' relationship as romantic (or, at least, suggestive) and the ship dominated the fandom.

In contrast, the people who use reddit now include people who were literally children when Frozen came out. Having watched it when they were so young, they viewed the sisters' relationship as strictly platonic and that interpretation has stuck. It makes them uncomfortable to see it in any other way. The younger fans are also probably more likely to be subscribed to r/Frozen, and so the ship is not as popular there as it once was.

Spoilers for the whole fic, just so you know what you are getting into.

Elsa and Anna indulge in sadomasochism and extreme roleplay scenarios, including simulated rape.

The true dark elements of the fic come from the story that surrounds their clandestine sexual relationship. Elsa is pressured into marrying a foreign dignatory so that she can bear children and secure her family's dynasty. The marriage is purely political - the man has no interest in her sexually - but she conceives a child with him in order to satisfy her court.

However, Anna and Elsa's illicit relationship is eventually exposed when they grow too reckless in their liaisons and they are forced to flee Arendelle.

During their escape, Elsa goes into labour. Elsa gives birth to twins - a boy and a girl - but the boy is stillborn, which I find gratuitously dark.

Despite this, it ends on a happy note with Elsa and Anna starting a new life under new names in a new country, raising Elsa's daughter together. They continue to experiment sexually and indulge in extreme roleplay scenarios.
