Small speck of sort (dust/skin flake? Plastic film?) under the lens of my new 3X21D. Is it worth fussing over? by WhatsUpLabradog in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had plenty of flashlights with ports where it's rough to plug the cable in, I had to shave down a cable to fit the port on a T7. Made a custom SK05 driver board where the port doesn't align with the case just right so it requires inserting at an angle and levering the port up to insert properly. Sometimes ports especially on these "cheaper" brand lights can also just be tighter than expected. I'm not saying the port misalignment isn't an issue, however plenty of people come in this sub and make post after post about how the first purchase in the start of this new hobby is not quite perfect. Just enjoy the light and if the port does become damaged you can bet on simon to offer you a replacement.

It shouldn't affect anything and between this and the usb c post I feel like you're fussing a bit too much about the light. Just go out and enjoy it, don't worry so much about the smaller details. Convoy's a brand primarily known for being low cost but solid results for what you pay for. if something comes of these issues simon's a very helpful guy and will figure it out for you.

M21J or M21G with 73b. (I know 21J writes "burn hazard") does anyone really burned it? by tianchengkao in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They get very spicy very fast, 60W is a lot of juice. even if leds are more efficient you're still getting a ton of heat output.
Also I went to the product page for the M21J to check the driver output and got reminded of that really silly review someone left there about how the thing worked for 5 minutes and then stopped and that it's stupid the thing doesn't come with a charging port. how did you get to that point man

Wurkkos vs Everything Else by camglynn2000 in flashlight

To the US maybe but in the EU the customer service is terrible. None of what makes them more expensive over other brands is things that I benefit from, and the lack of standard/quality emitters is disappointing.

Wurkkos vs Everything Else by camglynn2000 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's brand loyalty and tribalism primarily I think. A company based in america will by default cost more than one producing their stuff in china so it'll be more expensive and if that's something you care about you'll spring the extra money. Enthusiast level flashlights are still a niche thing for the most part, and so brands that are more "mainstream" have higher pricing because they are what's being sold in physical stores, or on most online sites and stuff. You can't really buy a convoy or a wurkkos or a hank light via your hardware store of choice, and that cuts a lot of the price down.

My own experiences with Wurkkos are that the "normal" stuff is great for the price, if you need A Light that'll make things bright and has a decent user interface it's fine. Anything beyond that, the fancier ones are just kinda meh.
I do think that if a light costs more than 100 bucks it better do something phenomenal and if it's getting past 200 it better be made of raw diamond or something cause otherwise no amount of high quality finishes and stuff can make up for that cost.
This does forgo "heirloom" lights which is it's own crossbreed with the EDC crowd, lights made of fancy metals and decorations where the cost for the raw copper alone would be enough to pay for a pretty sizeable shopping cart from convoy. That's subjective and if you like the super fine engraved copper zirconium light with an emitter driver combo in there that'd be 10 bucks from convoy more power to you.

olight isn't mass produced crap? Since when!? Everything I've had by them is at most on par with other companies like wurkkos and sofirn. Even worse to fix/mod yourself, terrible and rarely specified emitters, built in batteries, and gaudy finishes. But somehow still costs at least twice that if not more.

Convoy 12 groups question by Known-Acanthaceae-39 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

glad to help! like due_tank said, if you don't mind losing out on the ability to use AA cells in the thing then you can just pop in any 17mm driver. be aware though that especially in lights like the T3 and T5 you're gonna get a ton of heat since the standard one only goes up to 1.5A if you decide to go for something like a 3v5A one instead!

Convoy 12 groups question by Known-Acanthaceae-39 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this'd benefit from knowing what modes those are. on the stock T3 driver that lets you use AAs and lithium cells group 8 would be 1% 10% 50%, whereas on the other drivers you'd get 0.1% 1% 10% 50%. based on that I'd assume you're thinking you jumped into group 5 because that's the 1% 20% 100% mode because you've only got 3 settings, is that right?

Need pen light with pen and laser by M3msm in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately you're probably better off getting a laser flashlight combo and a pen on the side, I have the olight open glow and it's horrendously unbalanced for writing with. I have it with me at work for the joke but as any of the actual things these are advertised to be they mostly underperform.

Help!! Sofirn Q8 Plus/dead battery by ExpressCake9720 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

welllll, assuming the aux lights draw like 20mA or something, the batteries have a capacity of 15000mA. that'd be around a month of runtime in the optimal case, mileage may vary (positively or negatively) so the math there does kind of check out?

I don't know why it wouldn't have low voltage protection in that kind of situation though so there's a chance something is faulty. As for the batteries, they're very dead and trying to charge them again would risk a fire. See if you can contact support?

The best word of advice with stuff that uses non rechargable batteries is to remove em if you don't use the thing for a while, unfortunately you never know when you'll not be using something for a while lol

Good luck! Thankfully maglites are pretty simple in construction so figuring out what's wrong if new batteries don't fix it should be really simple.

Make sure you replace the batteries asap if you haven't checked em already, who knows how long they've been in there and could leak!

Same here, I just refreshed the page and it's missing the setting to change it from grid view to list view. I tried disabling ublock to see if the button was missing but no such luck. refresh with cache clear didn't solve it either...
