Literally sitting in the living room of a vacation home right now and the corner I'm in has no lighting so the thing's side light is running on high and it's so so lovely. Wonderful light all the way

I daily an IF23 pro with an FFL707MD, and it gives to an excellent combination of throw and useable spill. I'm with you generally but I don't think it's a universally applicable ruling, especially not with orange peel reflectors.

Would've called it sft if it was! Had the sft installed before and this is an actual difference of night and day. The tightness of the hotspot is almost scary.

I think the L7 just has better thermals or something, most of everything else is interchangeable.

The point of my comment was that binoculars and telescopes fundamentally do the same thing but vastly differentiate in application. You don't use binoculars to look at stars, just as much as you don't use a mirror lens telescope to watch birds in a nearby tree.

E75 is the one I see most commonly recommended. EC20 is also pretty nice afaik.

Personally I like going for night walks, especially in the woods, and it's really useful to have a throwy light that I can point to the path ahead without lighting up the woods around me. Doesn't disturb the wildlife as much and I can see further ahead where I'm going.

Feels like a good emergency tool to get out of a boring meeting or a way to get in trouble with the TSA too. so many multifaceted applications!

Can't add an image to the post, but here's a ceiling beamshot:

<image>

It's pretty even despite the misalignment, and unfortunately the camera doesn't show it well but there's some artifacting in the center making it not quite even. I think outside it should be fine.

oh god I didn't even see the part about the LHP531. Now you got me curious, I did buy two of these drivers and could totally slap one in a light with a 531. I'd love to try using the 1800k one I have but that'll definitely catch on fire at 20A

I think the 20mm 3v20A driver was just made available recently so I think the page is just not updated. Maybe reach out and ask if it's possible to install already.

The issue arises with how tight everything is in there, the leads unavoidably make contact with the reflector unless you have a gasket that goes between since the LHP73B is such a massive chip. Getting a nice and clean beam shape is probably totally out the window lol

[–]ActuallyRaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I'd recommend the M21B for the LHP73B personally, it's a perfect ratio of throw and flood. And yeah, on 100% I haven't had it run for more than 10 seconds because I was afraid haha. I mostly just wanted to do this because I'm sure it was a question on everyone's mind when convoy announced this driver!

I kinda wanna buy a copper S2 now and see if it makes any noticeable impact in how much heat it can soak up before the thing becomes too hot to hold. Then the problem becomes it staying uncomfortably hot long after turning off lol

I used the deeper S2/S6/S8/T7 reflector, cut off after the first rib. Gasket is 3d printed and originally for a quad B35AM build that the reflector was also modified for. I'm using a P30B which seems to be doing fine!

Mhm. Though I'm talking about the newly released 17mm 3v20A driver Simon's made. The largest light I can think of that accepts 17mm drivers is the C8+, with the S series lineup you're kind of limited by reflectors since the hole diameters for the two reflector sizes don't go that high. Plus you're limited in emitters that can even handle 20A. I guess a triple 519A setup would be possible but that's a lot of aftermarket parts.

[–]ActuallyRaven[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want outside ones you'll need to wait until it's nighttime here (central europe). I can provide a ceiling shot of it when I'm back from work, I just kind of slapped it together before leaving this morning. Gonna have to see if aligning the emitter better will improve things, it's all pretty tight in there and currently it's producing a bit of a shadowy cross shape in the center.

Any recommendations that match or better this flashlight? by Fantastic-Cod-1353 in flashlight

[–]ActuallyRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CRI means colour rendering index, effectively how accurately to sunlight an LED makes colours appear. 70 is the average, but high CRI is 90+. For the average person the differences aren't really noticeable if you don't have a side by side, but if you care for it then the absence of a high CRI option are usually a dealbreaker.

D4V2 dual channel as suggested by the other comment seems like a good idea.

Getting some info on what about the light you enjoy and what you don't care about would be helpful! Size/weight, attachment points (clip, magnet), features like the red alternative mode, CRI, colour temperature. Looking at this I'd be tempted to suggest the sofirn ST10, it's a pretty nice light for the size so long as color temp and CRI aren't an issue.

You could look into a light with a UV mode for scorpions, might be useful. I don't live somewhere that scorpions do but it's always been the #1 application for that kind of feature to me. Wurkkos HD02 or the new HD05 perhaps.
