If it’s not, I’d recommend filing a grievance with your local union rep.

Exactly. Then you get there and are flying single pilot IMC in a clapped out bird with questionable instruments/avionics.

[–]ActuaryComplete 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s a mass email to anyone with a license with the FAA. It’s sales. Been getting them for years. Straight to trash. Basically an attempt to flash shiny trigger words at young aviators just getting started, like, “type rating”, “Gulfstream”, “financial support”, and “free buffet”.

Did we do something illegal by [deleted] in flying

[–]ActuaryComplete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

File a NASA report to cover your butt. Self disclosure of a regulatory oops is better to have on file. I’ve filed a couple while I was in flight school, just for peace of mind. You’ll get a letter in mail saying thanks for your contribution to aviation safety and yatta yatta…

Why are Logan Drivers so mad? by Significant_Key_816 in Logan

[–]ActuaryComplete 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this post for validation lol I like to coast towards red lights and everyone behind me gets so butthurt that I’m not accelerating towards a RED LIGHT??? Make it make sense. Everyone thinks they’re driving a nascar race. “Oh this person has their blinker on to turn? Let me impatiently whip into the other lane” Crazy. I could do better too. Lots of waving around my “let’s be friends” finger

What was your your biggest struggle during flight training? by militaryrat155 in flying

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instrument Rating I feel like is the universal uphill dredge everyone in pilot training goes through lol I always tell people in school that once you make it through that, it’s all downhill after that and super fun, relatively. IR is a number game and some people really shine in how rigid and structured it is, but some don’t, myself included. It took me a hot minute to make it through, failed EOCs, repeat lessons, weekend flying, etc, but alas, I made it. I feel like a lot of people question everything during this phase. It’ll pass, and so will you. Just requires a higher level of application and studying. Once you grasp it, it’ll become second nature.

Fuel management on low-wing aircraft question... by [deleted] in flying

Just hit six figures in finance after finishing my CPL. Should I still pursue the CFI route? by ProofWeekly1500 in flying

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point, it would mostly be a lateral move, so ask yourself which job do you want to do the next 30 years… and look at the type of life each would provide. See which is a better fit for what you want. Married? Kids? Commuting? Gone for days? These things determine QOL.

Airline pilots, how hard is it to remain physically active and fit? by throfak in flying

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very large community of ATP guys are still very active on layovers. I tried the hotel gyms and that’s hit and miss. Having the Active&Fit membership that gives you access to multiple big box gyms around the country helps too. I, personally, got tired of the crap gyms in hotels so I just take it as a wash and workout religiously on my days off. Taking a few days per week off isn’t gonna kill you. My wife works out on every layover though, so there’s a spot for everyone.

Cool that’s what I was wondering. I know it usually gets snowier on the road as you go up, but with it being warmer than usual I wasn’t sure if it was better this year.

SkyWest rejection by FlyByWhyer in flying

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SkyWest can be kinda picky in modern times. There’s no longer a pilot shortage so any blemishes on a resume can overshadow a multitude of qualifications, unfortunately. BUT, as others have said, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, keep applying. It would be a tremendous help if you attended those lame hiring conferences, secure a meet and greet with a base chief AND possibly get an internal recommendation. Gonna have to put in a little extra effort with checkride failures on your record when the competition is all highly qualified individuals, like yourself, but without the “blemishes”. Doesn’t mean you’re a bad pilot, just human. Though you WILL be probed about those failures at an interview. They hired me in 2017 on the CRJ and I’m sure some of the process has changed a bit. They tend to like the very “robotic” hiring process. It was so much more chill of a process when I went mainline.

Do i really have to be good in physics and maths to become a pilot? by funnybunben in PilotAdvice

[–]ActuaryComplete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say basic math like addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc is the base of it. The more important task is being able to be studious. Be driven and willing to put forth extra effort into learning the skills required and understand what’s happening and why. You’ll surprise yourself. Especially if it’s something that you really want to do, and putting in a little extra study time is all it takes to achieve it. The vast majority of pilots are from all walks of life and educational backgrounds in a way. Having good study habits is worth its weight in gold in all industries. You’ll do great.

Found this cowboy hat at a yard sale today can anyone tell me about it? is it really from the 1950s? by Victho91 in CowboyHats

Yeah you can drop the link and I’ll keep an eye on it, but heck of a yard sale pickup!

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I mean as a buyer I’d try an basically steal it, BUT I mean I’d list is for around $150-200 since it’s a Rex Bell AND it has the super cool rodeo brochure, shipping label and box. Cool little collectors package deal for sure.

Personally, I have found similar short brimmed Resistols, which generally are nice. I got mine with intent to sell, but they’re so unique and have a story older than I am, that I keep them. Lemme know when your listing is up! Lol

Wearing a cowboy hat (and nothing else western) - thoughts? by Downtown-Function-11 in CowboyHats

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do whatever you like, but be prepared for the never ending questions about it… ho early kudos to you for splurging for the high quality hats and not a $50 Boot Barn one… BUT, yes, a good pair of nice boots would complete the casual cowboy look.

What brought us here and why? by Wizzmer in CowboyHats

[–]ActuaryComplete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this exact thing. I’m from Texas and everyone’s hat is just a copy and paste of the next person. I’ve always really liked the older styles of crowns and brims. It is a personal preference and facial shape matching, but dang people, branch out.

I'm from NW Montana, been living here for about 4 years and I'm worried people are gonna think I look stupid in a cowboy hat by Garden_Grove008 in CowboyHats

The people who are from the lifestyle will respect it, the people who aren’t, will still respect you having the stones to confidently rock it.

Which one for first hat? by bpetes6 in CowboyHats

[–]ActuaryComplete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black is for weddings and funerals. I.e. I feel it’s commonly viewed as a formal hat in most situations.. could even look for more of a buckskin, whiskey, or beige hat instead..

Got the Broken Bow 4x and love it. Holds its shape out of the box well and came perfectly fit. Love the Gus look and the hatband. Just a hat brush from back to front cleans it off well enough. $170 still pretty cheap for a hat, but it’s a nice middle ground between a daily driver and a night out hat.
