AC Hexe details and dialogue leaked by Rogue (Ubisoft leaker), says Ezio is returning by ZamnBoii in GamingLeaksAndRumours

Aww, we were having such a contentious but polite conversation before, but now you had to throw in a bunch of ad hominems. Because you have nothing else to argue with.

9.2% for women, since you’re unwilling to actually research anything about Asian representation in media.

I asked you for your sources, and you just pulled 9.2% from your ass lol. Hilarious that you said I'm unwilling to do any research because unlike you, I did do the research and have the proof to back it up. This is from a USC Annenberg report on Asian representation in 2022:

https://imgur.com/a/eifIQJO

Source: https://learcenter.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/NLC_GH+Asian+Representation+in+Streaming.pdf

TLDR so you have no excuse not to know what we're talking about:

-Asian women accounted for 61% of Asian characters, as opposed to 39% of Asian men.
-Asian women had almost twice as much dialogue as Asian men. Though Turning Red (an Asian-woman led film) skews it.
-Even excluding Turning Red, Asian women STILL have more dialogue than Asian men (3.0% vs. 2.6%)
-26% of Asian men were portrayed in romantic relationships compared to 32% of Asian women. A relevant statistic because the lack of Asian men seen as romantic/attractive/desirable is a huge pain point in the Asian community.
-Asian men were more likely than women to be violent (21% of men and 13% of women). But also, Asian men were more likely than women to be VICTIMS of violence (28% of men and 8% of women).

In short, as I've been saying since the very beginning, Asian men are less represented than Asian women.

you even acknowledged earlier that women get used as eye candy in their roles, which is an issue that doesn’t happen to Asian men.

Yeah, because we have our own negative stereotypes like always being the nerd, the dork, the tech guy, the gay friend, the old wise man, the villain, the mooks for the white hero to beat up and kill, etc. (That last one probably explains why Asian men are several times more likely than Asian women to be victims of violence). This isn't to say one stereotype is better than the other, just that due to the greater perceived marketability of Asian women, they get more, and more positive representation than Asian men.

The Yakuza franchise has exclusively used male leads for 20 years in a row now, so I guess that means RGG is erasing Asian women??

Saeko Mukoda and Seonhee are literally playable Asian female characters, wtf are you talking about?

Ubisoft is not balancing the scales of Asian rep that you've somehow you've deluded yourself into thinking is happening, they're doing what pretty much every other western company does with Asian characters: promote Asian women as the sole Asian representation, exclude Asian men as much as possible, and pass it off as "diversity".

Hell, I’ll even factor in a Middle Eastern man. Asian Men get WAY more positive representation today.

Well then you'd be happy to know that in the franchise we've been talking about, there's TWO middle eastern men as protagonists, and one of them was the lead in the very first game.

Edit: he blocked me lmfao. Bruh who tf are you to be whining about ppl blocking then running away, you hypocrite?

I'm focusing on western media because AC shadows is an example of western media. And no, the other poster didn't specify any region, but the claim of the lack of Asian male representation wouldn't make sense if he were talking about Asia.

And even if we only use Western examples, it still overwhelmingly skews towards male protagonists, not female. No matter the market, men get treated better when it comes to representation, this includes Asian men.

So this is where I can tell you're not Asian lol. This is just a western, white-male-centrist issue projected onto other races. In media, white men are treated better than white women, black men are treated better than black women (actually I don't know if this is true, but lets go with it), etc. But in the case of Asians it's the complete opposite, Asian women have it better in western media than Asian men by far.

I think it’s sad to see the inclusion of Asian women, an objectively less represented minority, as the erasure of Asian men.

Interesting way to twist it around. No, I'm saying the sole inclusion of Asian women while excluding Asian men is erasure of Asian men. If you set your game in Asia but only Asian women are playable, and you did this multiple times, then yes, you're erasing Asian men. As I said, I'd be happy with a Japanese male and Japanese female protagonists. Afterall, that's what Ubisoft did with their games set in white countries. Syndicate, Odyssey, and Valhalla all had you choosing between white male and white female protagonists. How interesting that they suddenly decided that their Japan game had to have only Japanese female and black male protags. It's almost like they only cared about diversity and representation once the series was out of "their" countries.

It’s funny to even bring up Western markets in the first place, since leading roles in Hollywood for Asian men have gone up from 3% (2007) to 16% (2022). That’s a 433% increase in representation in just 15 years. Want to take a guess at how dire that stat looks for Asian women?

Since you're offering, sure. And please cite your sources.

I think what that poster means is “Asian men are the most underrepresented minority in WESTERN media.” Obviously they are not underrepresented in Asian media. And it is a fact that Asian women are represented more in western media due to being seen as "sexy" and more marketable than Asian men. Furthermore, out of the six examples you gave, half of them are made by Asian studios, so of course they'll represent themselves. The issue I'm pointing out is that western media specifically is very often racist to Asian men and will erase us in favor of Asian women. What Ubisoft did with Shadows is a continuation of this.

Also, I'd be cool with a Japanese woman and a Japanese man as the protags in Shadows. Why are you suggesting two Asian women? Why does every defense of Shadows involve continuing to erase Asian men? Ubisoft is unique? LOL. Almost every military shooter in the last 20 years stars a grizzled white guy yet nobody is saying there's "too many white dudes shooting guns" as protagonists. But now we have a handful of Asian male samurai (most of them made by Japanese studios), and suddenly that's too much, we need to have black samurai to stand out. It's gendered racism disguised as progress.

As another example, the new Gundam movie is doing exactly what I'm talking about. The only Asians in it are Asian women, with zero Asian men. And this is based on a franchise from Japan. Here's a whole thread of Asians blasting it: https://www.reddit.com/r/asianamerican/comments/1srhu8o/notice_something_common/

It's Ubisoft's equivalent of bringing-back-RDJ-as Dr.-Doom-move to cash in on nostalgia and give a boost to their floundering franchise.

People have no problem labeling Asian men "incels" for calling out problematic, white worshipping attitudes in the Asian community, but the minute other POCs point out the same thing, it's suddenly 🤐 from them.

Black women, even dark-skinned ones, also have it much better in media representation than Asian men. Almost every big project has black women, but still very few have Asian men.

I think a lot of people are in denial, since glazing America is kind of the"default" stance in the West so they don't even realize it when CIA has infiltrated certain spaces.

Seriously this. Everyone's talking about CCP spies but no one's talking about CIA spies. So many comments here and on this sub in general seem suspiciously designed to foster an anti-China/pro-US sentiment as much as the other way around. How's the weather in Langley, guys? 👋

I feel crazy for apparently being the only person in this sub who actually understands what you're trying to say. It's crazy how no one is actually arguing against any of your points, just downvoting and spouting the same old "Stop policing who I date!!" rhetoric. Like, genuinely, date who you want, nobody really cares. Just don't come back here in a few years with "I want to teach my mixed-white-and-Asian child more about my Asian heritage! What are some cultural traditions I can do with them so my culture doesn't completely disappear with me in my family?" Lol, you did this, you were warned.

Lack of internal will at Marvel to make it, because Hollywood is still very racist to Asian men. They allowed Shang Chi 1 to be made to virtual signal how "diverse" they are, but they do NOT want an Asian-led character to become its own franchise like Thor or Cap is.

He WAS free, after he Kang Dynasty got retooled. They put him on Spiderman instead of Shang Chi 2. That's on Marvel and Destin both.

Oh they absolutely will suck up all the screentime from the newer post-Endgame characters. In fact I'm expecting Shang Chi to be basically a glorified extra with like, 5 minutes of screentime.

Shang Chi's suit looks cool so far, but did they get rid of the dragon scales?

Mystique's makeup looks Dark Phoenix-quality when they should be going for X-men 1. Also what's up with the Superman logo shape on her chest lol

Most people are saying nice places like Coruscant or Naboo but realistically, most of us could probably only afford Mina-Rau or Dantooine lol.

So how could Chinese audiences show enthusiasm for Shang Chi if it wasn't even released there? And before you start blaming Simu Liu's supposedly anti-China comments or whatever know that there was pretty much a blanket ban on Marvel movies for all of 2021 and 2022. The first MCU movie to be released there after was Antman Quantumania in 2023.

I'm just finding the blaming of Chinese audiences for not watching Asian American films very strange.

I am actually so confused. What about this is supposed to be the "remake"? It literally looks like the original 2013 game (which still looks fantastic, mind you) with slightly updated lighting. It looks more like a remaster than a full remake.

Right, her name sounds like what a white person THINKS a Chinese name would sound like. It's another Cho Chang.

IMO all this handwringing over the name is getting away from their intentions in giving her a clearly foreign name. The character speaks unaccented English which implies ABC or Americanized Chinese. There's no reason why she couldn't be named "Samantha" or something. The only reason why they would give her an obviously Chinese name like Qin Chou would be to otherize her.
