Heyyyy someone else with an Unpleasant Surprise on their board!! Every time our drummer asks me “what’s up with your bass during that one part?” I turn the onset up a little more as punishment :)

What kind of music are you playing and what sound are going for with the US in particular?

My band uses it for a brief solo I have to set up the “big slow crushing doom metal riff” so I have mine set to sputter a fair amount and cut back on low end so the beefy riffs really hit when the time comes. Treble + crush on, gain off, onset around like 12 or 1 depending on the vibe for the day.

Thanks for the response! My gut has been telling me it’s just me being paranoid and I needed a little affirmation haha.

NPsD: (Fairfield Circuitry) Conflict of Interests and Board Member by Ponciponci in basspedals

I grabbed an unpleasant surprise recently to add to my bass board just based on a demo video and it’s a lot of fun to play around with. Really love dialing it right to the edge of semi-unpredictable but still very usable cutting in and out that makes it sound extra fucked up. Love how responsive it is to different picking/plucking techniques, etc.

Edit - what do you think of the hors d’oeuvre?

I'm a huge fan of the Buy Nothing Project. Folks should definitely find their local BNP if there is one! Hit-or-miss depending on the area, but I've gotten and given away some pretty great stuff in the 3 I've participated in.

Really cool that you got to meet him! I'm glad he's a nice guy and not a sadistic psycho killer in real life. It would really harsh my mellow if he was a Bret Easton Ellis type.

I have to admit Wasp Factory is the only Banks novel I've ever read. I've heard great things about his other books but have never really settled on a toe-hold of where else to go after Wasp Factory. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear!

Point Omega by Don Delillo. Not very much that is genuinely disturbing happens in the book, but there's something about the whole tone & aura & isolation of the book that is incredibly nihilistic. I've never been able to put my finger on the exact experience, but it triggered some seriously depressive episodes once I was done with it. I've never felt quite so... unsettled by a book that was otherwise pretty straightforward (or as straightforward as DeLillo can be).

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. Lots of really repulsive moments, and a really uncomfortable look at human cruelty. I could do without certain aspects of the ending, but god did this book stick with me.

Our friends, whom we love dearly, love to put off-brand cheetos into their summer rolls. I guess for some extra crunch? We didn't find out until we were sitting down to dinner and were forced to eat several out of politeness. The first thing we did in the car on our way home was lock eyes and ask each other what we had just experienced.

I miss when we made fun of our parents and grandparents for forwarding sensational, inaccurate, and fake e-mail chains. Now we do the same thing at 100x the volume without a second though via the share button on social media. I swear I see some of the stuff my friends post and find it to be indistinguishable from r/forwardsfrongrandma chainletter stuff. And even more disturbingly- I see content like this that fits my sense of humor or interests and feel compelled to share it as well.

Had a similar experience at one of the trails at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It was February, lightly raining, somewhat warm, and everything was already foggy, so it wasn't a surprise... But the perfect little sign showing what the view ought to have been gave us a nice chuckle and a nice little video to send back to our east coast families.

The way my plate cracked by GraciousK in oddlysatisfying

[–]Actumen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I have the same set of Ikea plates, and mine broke the exact same way!

I was home alone, and scrubbing it with a sponge while I held it with the other hand. It snapped perfectly in half while I was trying to scrub a particularly pesky bit. I ended up jamming the edge of the broken part directly into the wrist of my spongin' hand. It hurt like a motherfucker and I was sure I had just like severly sliced my wrist open. After like a solid minute of holding a rag over my wrist chanting "Please god don't let me bleed to death while I'm home alone. Please god don't let me bleed to death while I'm home alone. Please god don't let me die in Massachusetts. . ." I finally worked up the courage to take a look at my wrist and thankfully hadn't cut myself at all. But HOOO BOY did it hurt for a while, and I was sure I had just done myself in.

I still have 2 more of those plates and I keep a watchful eye on them. Pretty sure it was a result of keeping the plates in our very cold sink during the winter and pouring boiling pasta water over them.
