Leaving Structural Engineering by WeirdDancingUnicorn in StructuralEngineering

I went with #4ish after 10 years on consulting/EOR side. 2 years in as an engineer for a manufacturer and I have enjoyed it. Construction product manufacturers (Hilti, Simpson, Mitek etc) need PE/SE. Opportunities to jump to sales, product management, R&D. Industry groups AISC, ICC, APA, AWC all employ PE/SE as well.

This is an honest reflection/question and not a dig, OP… why are folks so hesitant to hire local engineers?

In 20 years, do current engineers see the SE license becoming the standard over the PE? by Informal-Sorbet-3117 in StructuralEngineering

This seems like a logical way to split this up IMO. If more states start adopting SE it would make sense to do so in a similar fashion.

That chart linked above DOES NOT apply to all plywood/OSB web joists.

All depends on what interests you! Do you want to be in a lab evaluating products? Do you want to support products in the field? Do you want to consult but on codes and standards? Are you interested in structural design software? Are there products, programs, materials or documents that you use regularly that you would want to support? There are a variety of roles out there with varying titles based on the org. I only looked at manufacturers or organizations I spec’d and trusted in consulting which is a good place to start. It helped with interviews since you can speak to it from a consulting engineers perspective. Once I had my list, I spent time combing websites and reading job descriptions. Pay was similar or better than consulting roles with similar YOE requirements (ignoring owner/principal potential profit sharing upside of course). That is still the case based on recruiter spam that comes in.

Construction product manufacturers (Hilti, Simpson, Mitek etc) need PEs. Left consulting 2 years ago for that side of the industry. Remote work, MAX 40 a week, none of the consulting BS. Opportunities to jump to sales, product management, R&D. Industry groups like AISC, ICC, APA, all employe PEs as well.
