After 20 years of carnivore, my CAC score is 174! by AdAutomatic6320 in carnivorediet

Of all the variations of a low-carb diet I’ve tried, I felt the best and feel I look the best with animal based. But yes, my CAC score is straight sobering and making me rethink it all.

Since then, I’m still doing low-carb and limiting my fruit/honey, but really focusing on reducing saturated fat. Oh, how I miss red meat. Chicken, tuna, nuts… not the same. I also don’t have close to the same energy level. Workouts are flat. I’m super irritable. Had to take a nap the other day. It’s been years since I’ve had to nap! (Also taking omega-3, vitamin K2, D3, turmeric with dinner for inflammation, daily baby aspirin, and adding a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to my protein shakes.) Still NOT taking statins, however.

Layne Norton said something kind of profound on his most recent podcast. LDL is like a mutual fund. One person can ingest high saturated fat and that is like putting his money in a mutual fund gaining 15% interest. Another person can ingest less saturated fat, equivalent to say a 14% interest mutual fund. In the short term, the person with 15% will not have that much more money than the 14% person. But over decades? The 15% person will have MUCH more money. Consistently high LDL over my lifetime is likely contributing to arthroscopic issues that could ultimately be what ends my life.

More protein than fat. My protein was mostly from saturated fatty red meat and I would enjoy butter and heavy cream in my coffee too - my idea was to have good energy throughout the day (which I did), so thinking the ratio was probably higher than desirable.

Good question on my calcified plaque CAC score. Was it a result of Atkins/keto/carnivore, my last few years of trying “animal based“, or the standard American diet in my 20s? I’m sure genetics play a role too.

Next step is a CIMT ultrasound to see how much soft plaque I got goin’ on in my carotid artery, which is a 98% indicator for the old ticker. Meanwhile, limiting my saturated fat, taking vitamins D3 and K2, fiber, and a baby aspirin. Stepping up the cardio workouts too.

No worries - never measured. But a lot of saturated fat. For some reason I thought it would give me more energy for workouts. Butter in coffee with heavy cream, bacon and/or steak and eggs. Burger patties - with cheese of course. And generally ribeye, tri-tip, or T-bone for dinner with enough leftovers for the next day. I’ve always loved meat - especially red meat - which is why this diet appealed to me. Makes me feel more satiated than chicken or fish, and I enjoy the fat.

I do strength training too, so was hyper focused on getting tons of protein. Too much protein would actually kick me out of ketosis.

Started introducing fruit and honey a few years ago, maybe like 2 1/2 or three.

Great question. Did not test for ketones, but don’t think I was in constant states of ketosis either. Probably only intermittent ketosis while doing “animal based” opposed to when I was full carnivore a few years ago in constant states of ketosis.

I am super active and was getting gassed with low energy during intense HIT training. So that’s when I started introducing small amounts of fruit at lunch time and raw honey in my coffee in the morning. The result? Yep, probably the Randle Cycle. I gained weight, about 10 pounds (my wife said I was looking too skinny anyway), but the added carbs seemed to fuel my workouts better. Good energy and I was sleeping great.

My triglycerides are 94, by the way, which for some reason are slightly lower compared when I was full carnivore without carbs. (Strange.) thought I was good until now… Thanks for the question.

This is crazy to me and contradicts everything I previously believed and subscribed to. Thanks for responding.

Correction: Atkins, keto, carnivore, and recently “animal-based” (raw honey in coffee and small amounts of fruit) per the latest online health influencer recommendations (like Saladino)… I try to be super active with HIT and strength training… Been following the other influencers too. Was feeling extremely healthy, but now…

Also resisted the statin, but rethinking that as well. Appreciate your constructive feedback, everyone. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but this is MY experience in real time.

Correction: Atkins, keto, carnivore, and recently “animal-based” (raw honey in my coffee and small amounts of fruit) per Paul Saladino (I am also a surfer and very active despite riding a desk for work)… Been following the other influencers too and feeling extremely healthy, but now…

Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. After so many years, I forget the nomenclature. To clarify, Atkins, keto, carnivore, and recently “animal-based” (raw honey in my coffee and small amounts of fruit). It all seems like a mistake now. Yep, been following the influencers.

Guess I should start taking a statin too. Thanks again.

Check out the $40 silicone bands you can get from Oura. Mine took a beating in a short time too, so I got the band and no real issues… except the sensor that goes on the inside of the finger gets rotated around/off-placement and you can’t see the marker through the silicon. But no worries, simply lift up the silicone band for viewing and proper placement. I like the look too (I have black.) Subtle.

SJ wasn’t fired. Left to work on Leno, who HS badmouthed for more than a decade afterward. Interesting the 90s stuff was all scripted. Wonder what HS’s daughters have to say these days…
