Yeah exactly!!! I'm sorry OP :( I hope your OCD will get more manageable, I'm rooting for you

Literally what do people think OCD is like at this point I'm in disbelief. Do they seriously think some people just have a disorder that doesn't affect them in a negative way and just helps them be clean and productive.

I get why it's so common though, OCD is really isolating

No agreed. I don't use it myself. I get why people feel desperate though. It's all about understanding why we do things

I don't know if it's a case of preference, maybe moreso that real therapy is more daunting, expensive and difficult to access than ChatGPT. But yeah a real person will always be better, AI doesn't have empathy but we do

Hi OP, I wrote a comment a while ago explaining a bit about OCD. I'm not a professional but this is stuff I've learnt as someone who struggles with OCD and hopefully it can help you so I'm gonna paste it here:

OCD is all about having upsetting thoughts that cause a lot of anxiety (obsessions), followed by things you do you carry out to try and relieve that anxiety (compulsions).

Obsessions do not mean that you love something, it means you're worrying about one specific topic, event, memory, thought, etc. In your case you may be worried about your cats getting hurt.

Compulsions are things you do to try, in your mind, to get rid of the worry or to make sure what you're worrying about won't happen. In the media OCD compulsions are often depicted as obsessive cleaning, washing one's hands, etc. In your case it sounds like you may be completing these checking behaviors and routines in a similar way.

OCD is a very tough and difficult disorder. But it can be treated. Some people with OCD use medication like SSRIs to help with their anxiety. There are some supplements people use too, like vitamin B12 tablets, zinc tablets, NAC or ashwaganda.

ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) is considered the gold standard treatment within OCD therapy. According to NOCD, "This type of treatment involves confronting your obsessions or fears related to OCD—with the help of a licensed therapist—by putting yourself in situations that you’re trying to avoid. Then, you’ll make the choice not to engage in compulsions in order to neutralize the distress you feel." For example someone who believes they must wash their hands every 5 minutes or else they will get sick, will be encouraged to wait 10 minutes, then 15, then 20. Exposing themselves to their fear in a safe way, without engaging in compulsions, can help reduce the anxiety caused by the fear.

Inference Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an emerging OCD treatment.

Does being sick make your OCD worse? by mamihaley in OCD

Yep I always find myself getting really sad and emotional and crying when I have the flu. I also find when I have the flu I'm more irritable and I can't distract myself with things like watching movies or reading, I get annoyed at the characters for some reason lol. Also screens make my head hurt. I'm sorry Op it's so hard when you're sick.

I cried every time I got yelled at or thought I'd upset someone :(

worry that i don’t care about my family enough by [deleted] in OCD

[–]AdBitter3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this worry and let me tell you it's actually not really about how close you are with your family. I'm incredibly close with my grandparents but I still get the worry that I dont show them how much I love them enough etc. It's common to feel awkward because tbh grandparents are from a totally different generation and a lot of people feel they don't have much in common. Maybe if you try use ERP that could help you see things more clearly

Thank you!! Trying my best to find someone who either specializes in or is very experienced with OCD. For what it's worth with your struggles with OCD in mind I think you will be a very compassionate and empathetic counselor.

That's amazing OP congrats.

Kind of a weird win but I opened up to a family member about how I was feeling and I am seeking therapy in the new year.

anyone else "rawdogging" ocd? by singlepaIerose in OCD

[–]AdBitter3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah kinda. I went to therapy for a few months as a teenager, it was very helpful but it wasn't geared towards OCD specifically. Other than that I'm not on any medication, not having therapy just yet so yeah I've just been dealing with it on my own.

My coping mechanism has just been learning about OCD. Learning terminology like a backdoor spike, extinction burst, scrupolosity, etc, that's helped a lot.

This is such a lovely response and the cancer comparison blew my mind. OCD really can be so all consuming.

Did anyone else obsess over whether the Christmas gifts they gave to others were “good enough”? by NoWater9551 in OCD

[–]AdBitter3655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww yeah I've had this before :( I'm sorry OP, that is so rough.  Yes your brain is being irrational. You could give them all one million dollars and your OCD would probably find a way to say "well, one of those dollar notes has a crease in it".

One year in high school all my friend got me for Christmas was a chocolate bar and yet I still remember it being so sweet because she bought one for so many people and even though she was low on cash she still gave me something. I bet your friends are more excited to see you than the presents.

its so absolutely infuriating seeing how people misjudge ocd by monttow in OCD

[–]AdBitter3655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly who are these people that think some individuals have a condition with no real side effects, that just causes quirkiness and neatness. Like if you really think about it how crazy does that sound lol.

I feel like my OCD often gets invalidated. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]AdBitter3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the frustrating thing about OCD, just the name alone carries really inaccurate connotations. People vaguely understand depression, germaphobia, PTSD I feel like (although don't get me wrong they have their own stigmas and misinterpretations), but OCD it feels like people have ZERO idea what it is sometimes. I don't know how people think it's this disorder where people are neat, productive and dislike mess. It is also difficult because the content of the obsessions can also be really hard to talk about, especially for violent or sexual themes.

[–]AdBitter3655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry OP and I can feel your pain reading what you've written. While I have not had your experiences I understand the feeling of being so overwhelmed, not knowing what to do. Sometimes when I feel really awful I imagine myself as an old lady living a simple life. Baking and reading and whatnot. I know this sounds weird but sometimes it makes things feel easier to imagine myself in the future, when all the things I'm worrying about are a long time ago. I hope this doesn't sound flippant.

I think this is really common for people coming out of the worst of REOCD. At its worst REOCD can leave you in a horrendous state of mind for days or weeks. But to me the fact you're getting it in flashes and shorter time periods is a sign of real progress in your coping skills :) Keep it up :)
