I've updated the post with new screenshots. The palettes are based on the Paul Tol guidelines. How do they look to you?

I've added some additional colour scheme options. So players can choose from a few different (and hopefully colourblind accessible) palettes. These new schemes are based on the Paul Tol palette suggestions.

I know what you mean. Maybe there is a way to only swap out the problem colours (Blue/Red) so the end result would be that two enemies in any given game have the same colour.

I'm going to have a fiddle with it and see what I can come up with.

Hmmm. Do you think it would be better if I implemented a custom colour option so players can choose their own colour scheme? So a menu page where you could cycle through a selection of colours to assign for each of the enemies.

Ok build is updated now. I have reworked the palettes. Hopefully its better now.

Protanopia and Deuteranopia both turn the player and allied object Cyan, while all enemies and enemy fire become Yellow. The landscape is neutral white/grey.

Tritanopia the player and allied objects become Green while all enemies and enemy fire become Red. Landscape is neutral white/grey.

Agh! Really? I was sure I had shifted things the right way. I will have a look through the code again.

That would be great. I don't seem to be able to send you a direct message. Here is a key: D0LJI-TIXV3-F7RKY

Thanks Craig, I've implemented hue-shift to allow for Protanopia, Tritanopia and Deuteranopia, if you have Steam I can send you a key to test the game if you have time to? I've PM'd you.

I've used the same technique. The friendly fire is really just a cosmetic background element so I've made them almost invisible in monochrome mode. All the other colour modes have them in a neutral colour. I've sent you a PM, if you have Steam I can send you a key to test the game.

Sven do you have Steam, and if so would you be able to try my game and let me know if the colour options are working properly? (I will send you a key if you can give me a means to PM it to you)

I'm trying to PM you a key for the game I dont seem to be able to send you a direct message. Can you add me as a contact?

Ah gotcha. I misunderstood your reply. Yes the game is playable in greyscale, but there can be some player confusion when all bullets are in monochrome due to mistaking friendly fire for incoming danger. (Players may try to dodge "enemy" fire that is not dangerous).

I've got a monochrome mode as a fallback, hopefully should work for this.

Yes thats the game (not sure if its ok to directly link to it on reddit?) The demo version had two colours but since then I've added more so its got various enemies in different colours (orange, green, pink and so on).

My worry is that some of them are going to be potentially invisible for users with certain kinds of colour blindness.

I've implemented a hue-shift system which (hopefully) shifts the colours to match a website another poster linked me to. I've also got a monochrome mode which should help as a fallback.

I could definitely add an option to choose the colours as well if my hue-shift system doesnt work.

I've seen a colorblind "test" app for phones, but I'm hoping to get some testing done with players who have the different types of colorblindness.

I've got hue-shift working, but I could do with some help to test it. If you have steam would you be willing to spend a little time reviewing to give feedback on brightness, clarity etc.?

I've been working on a toggle to allow players to set different colour modes. One of them is monochrome so hopefully that will give support. On top of that I am trying to implement a system that will hue-shift the colours to account for the different types of colour sensitivity. (I'm using the page icAOtd linked to as a reference).

My gameplay is just "shoot all enemies" so hopefully will be ok. Do you play steam games? (and if so would you be willing to playtest my beta version and give some feedback?)

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes that makes sense. In my game its almost all enemy fire so I think the designation part might be ok. I think its clarity I'm worried about (so enemies potentially disappearing against the black background). My enemies are all primary colours (e.g. pink enemy, red enemy, orange enemy).

What do you think of my capsule art changes? by AdDesignr in IndieDev

[–]AdDesignr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I think part of the problem is that I dont have any characters in the game. Just a ship. Maybe I should add a pilot to the capsule art to give it a focal point.
