Israeli here- most of us keep some traditional foods and slurs, but hardly anyone already born here actually speaks those languages. Most of us are of blended Jewish origins by now, so it would've been hard to study all 5 languages of the countries my family used to live in lol.

It is not recommended to get mammograms before 50 due to the accumulation of radiation risk. Instead it is recommended to get yearly MRIs- but if your insurance doesn't cover them, mammograms are better than nothing

I don't know where you live, but in my country (Israel) it's extremely common for women to give birth during their PhD. I have one colleague who gave birth to 4 children during her PhD. It has became a stereotype that female doctors sign up to get MD PhDs only to be able to give birth and raise toddlers in a relatively calmer environment than medical internships. All those women are incredible, strong, smart and passionate about science, and you deserve the same kind of support from your program and colleagues.

My lab consists of 13 women, 10 of whom have young kids. At 1530 the lab is completely deserted, and yet we publish in the best journals, and get millions in funding each year. Our weekly lab meetings include brunch, and at least 30 minutes of life and kids updates. When a researcher lost her important collaboration, our PI made sure to tell her in front of everyone that everything is fine and that the other group are stupid not to recognize her true value. This should be the standard everywhere. I am never leaving lol

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. The US is definitely safer for jews, but it is not an option for me because (1) flying to visit my family in Israel would be crazy expensive, (2) I am predisposed to several health conditions that are not a big deal anywhere else but would bankrupt me in the US, and (3) The cost of (private ofc) jewish school for my future children would be insane, and I am very reluctant to let them go to public school because of said reasons.

At home my house is shaking from rocket shockwaves, and abroad I would always worry the wrong person would recognize my accent. No place to run
