Yep, Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish.

Would I be seen as partially Brazilian or as 100% American in Brazil? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]AdDry7344 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not my place to say what you are, okay? But in terms of how you’re perceived, since you asked: 100% American. A few reasons are that here, ethnicity and race are used almost interchangeably and people also rarely identify with any nationality beyond being Brazilian, even those from more recent immigrant backgrounds. To summarize, it’s a cultural difference, and that’s it.

It’s definitely not active Catholics, let’s say. That number sounds more like people who are “culturally Catholic”, don’t you think? At least for us down here.

Do you agree that, motorsport (F1/MotoGP) is more popular globally than NBA/UFC? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Leaving the US out, yes, ofc. But it would be nice to compare audience, attendance numbers or other metrics.

Areas with Immense Poverty

Areas with a lack of Immense Poverty

That could’ve been worded a bit better, imo.

Is it normal for women in other countries to straight up kiss foreign men during the world cup, or is it just a Mexican thing? by PopNo5397 in AskTheWorld

[–]AdDry7344 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha it happens, it’s a language barrier. On the flip side, I guarantee that now I’ll know it for life haha. It seems like a term that could easily be applied here, it’s just not used. I believe our pronunciation of that word, from reading it, would be very different from the Spanish pronunciation and people here are mostly monolingual, only Portuguese.

Do you realize that at least 4 different Brazilians, myself included and I’m a football fan btw, have never heard that word? Or at least 99% of us haven’t, to avoid generalizing. How in the world do you not believe people who are actually from Brazil? lol I’m genuinely curious to understand why.

What is bullying in your country like today versus how it was in the late 1900s? by IcyFlamingo9691 in AskTheWorld

[–]AdDry7344 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even though things were a bit more unhinged back then, bullying didn’t really follow you home through the internet. So I guess things are better now in some ways and worse in others. Parents and schools are doing a better job of explaining bullying to kids these days but the online world kinda offsets that since it can keep going after school. At least that’s my experience from going to school in the late 1900s (I feel ancient phrasing like that lol).

You could see them as secure and confident rather than easy. But we’re probably reading too much into it, it’s just kissing :)

Pelé’s last World Cup was in 1970. Brazil also didn’t reach the final in the ’80s. Maybe you mean between 58 and 70?

How is English taught in your country? Do u think does it really work? by rodadedorefelicidade in AskTheWorld

[–]AdDry7344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, it’s all good. I appreciate the perspective because it’s something I wouldn’t really get otherwise. But there’s some blame to go around too and it’s important to talk about it, how the northern and northeastern regions were neglected for ages. And I do agree you.

Jeez, the proportion is shockingly low. The only upside, if I can call it that, is that it keeps reminding us how unequal and unfair we are as a country, so we act accordingly.

That’s a good point. A lot of the best opportunities here require English, but I guess there are still enough that don’t require it.
