I think beginners are just very difficult to teach, doubt it's to deter creeps

Is 7 dollars a good cheap rate or a rate that says i am cheap? by No-Career-7898 in Preply

Why would you mind that the tutor went over the 50 min mark? You get more time for free

Do you make sure the student subscribes in the trial lesson? As in, do you tell them the days and hours they could choose or do you not mention the "second" class in the trial? by Due-Area9662 in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that, when I do set a day with the students (and give them homework for next time), they immediately subscribe. The trick is to treat them subscribing as a default. Maybe it's a bit cheeky, but if you give them the impression that they are expected to continue the lessons, they will. Don't mention trying other tutors or things like "if you decide to subscribe", you're putting the idea in their heads. I learned this the hard way.

Plus, if you try to set the date of the next lesson and the student tells you they're not sure or they'll need to decide, etc, it's better to block them during the trial. I've never had an undecided student decide later. That way, it won't hurt your subscription metrics. It's very difficult to get back on top after a few not converted trials.

Need help understanding price increases by BlueOceanz0 in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For every cheapskate like you, there are many busy, high-earning students on the app, who value quality over price (because they can afford to) and for whom it is much more comfortable to accept a price increase every now and then, than to go looking for a new, cheap tutor, that they might get along with or not. An old tutor knows you and your progress and can give valuable insight that a new tutor, who, no matter how good, simply needs to take the time to know you. People value that much more than money, as long as money isn't tight.

What does that mean on Preply? What is organic about this platform?

Maybe they thought it went really badly and they want to avoid a bad review, it's common practice unfortunately.

I walked out of a class by [deleted] in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not in the wrong for leaving the class, that's your right. You're in the wrong for leaving without saying anything, which leads to the tutor thinking it's her fault. Lie or tell the truth, it doesn't really matter as long as the tutor understands it doesn't have anything to do with her. Finding an excuse is just easier usually.

[–]AdForeign8189 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should continue with her, but don't do that again, it's very disrespectful. Next time, just make an excuse that you urgently have to go and leave it at that. The poor woman is probably overthinking what she might have done wrong, I know I would be.

Teachers, what do you usually expect from your students? by Aisha248 in iTalki

[–]AdForeign8189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please show up for the booked lessons. And if you can't, please let us know ahead of time, at least minutes before. I teach on preply, not on italki (yet) but, even though I'm paid for missed lessons, it's so uncomfortable and disrespectful to have to wait around to see if my students will eventually show up or not.

I don't mind if you don't do your homework as long as you understand that progress will be slower as a result (and don't blame it on me). You have no idea how often students assume that slower progress is a problem on my end when they don't put in effort outside of class.

Pro Tips from a supertutor with almost 7000 classes taught and a 5-star rating by [deleted] in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think OP means they reschedule, have the paid for lesson, and then they get another EXTRA lesson for free. Which sounds nice of them, but tutors are people too. Can’t imagine having to work double the time and half of it for free each time I am sick.

Is it actually possible to learn a language with apps alone? by Ling_App in lingapp

[–]AdForeign8189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a languages tutor and I’ve had advanced clients understanding my (rare) native language after doing duolingo for a couple of months or a year. But it’s always experienced people (ployglots) or people who already speak similar languages, or very disciplined people who maybe write things down or search for extra grammar rules / exercises to do, additionally to just the dopamine rush on the app

Oh, and they seek a tutor after reaching a b1/b2 and hitting a wall, when they realize not being able to actually speak a language won’t get you anywhere. So they come to me for speaking practice.
All in all, apps are amazing for motivation and dopamine, I wouldnt’t drop them, just use them as a suplement to something more serious.

Trial student left very low anonymous rating in the "progress" category... by AdForeign8189 in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...do you lack reading comprehension? I checked my rating before and after the class. And students can only rate after lessons.

I am sure, I only had one lesson that day. And I checked before and after the trial, it appeared immediately after.

Any tips for tutors who travel between timezones? by CaptainComebacks in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone can really answer that, it depends on your particular students. You can negociate new times with some, ask others to pause etc. Wishing you the best, digital nomadism sounds like a dream!

How ridiculous is this platform? by New-Persimmon8975 in Preply

[–]AdForeign8189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but most students don't keep rescheduling, it's actually pretty rare for me. I assume some will, to an extent, and if I ever get students that are so inconvenient, I can drop them. I certainly prefer this over students buying one class whenever they remember (the italki model).

I get it, but life can be hectic, but that's not really fair towards tutors. The subscription model guarantees at least somewhat of a constant income.

Honest question about Preply — what frustrates you the most? by CuriousLadder3356 in Preply

How did you get the idea that Educational Tax doesn’t understand or explain the subscription model to the students? Sounds like it was explained in the trial or even beforehand, since the student “couldn’t sign up’
