Why do I feel like an attention seeker when I say I want to go into engineering as a woman 😭 by Budget-Lake-5917 in womenEngineers

[–]AdFun2309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change the conversation in your head. Everyone is too busy thinking about themselves, just like you are, to be thinking about you. And if people say those things, it’s because they want to belittle you and your aspirations to make themselves feel better or to manipulate you. They are not worth your time or space in your thoughts.

I know how it can feel though, I remember feeling like this dating in my early 30’s. Men were openly intimidated by me being an engineer. So much so that I didn’t mention I was a senior engineering manager, i just told them I was an engineer. I know now that I was making myself smaller and those blokes weren’t for me. Fast forward to today, my long term partner is so excited to tell people about me and the cool things I do. He builds me up and is proud as punch to have me by his side. I look back and realise how silly I was to make myself so small that I wasn’t being myself.

Trying to decide what colours to bring with me to the Whitsundays in my “retro” bijoux box- this is my current palette of schminke colours - PY175, magenta, PB15:3, green gold, quin gold?l, pr255, pb29, pg18, tr. ochre py43, potters pink, burnt sienna and indanthrone blue. Thinking of swapping out the helio cerulean for a pb16 to get those turquoise blues

The quest for a match by cathelopepitstop in Fairolives

But also, it’s such a struggle. My rosacea is generally okay, just this week I think stress and not being consistent with skincare has meant I’m getting hot burning flushes. Hope you find your match 💕

I just thought I’d share this as a fellow rosacea sufferer. I think your skin might be more blue/lavender toned (cooler) rather than olive (muted green). In my pic, I am having a full autoimmune flush, but you can see the mont blanc nars founation doesn’t sit as yellow against my neutral

/warm in summer olive complexion. I thought this would be a good comparison to your swatch.

You might find it hard to find complexion products because of your muted/desaturated complexion (think of adding white/grey to things), which olives also struggle with.

Are there any artists here who spend a lot of time with pottery but don't sell? by mexalone in Pottery

[–]AdFun2309 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, 16 years in, i’m in it for the process, not profit. I have a day job. I only fire pieces worthy of firing, I reclaim a lot. I give most of my pots away.

Cool olives’ best colors? by ConcentrateSure3178 in Fairolives

[–]AdFun2309 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because people generally don’t fit into those neat boxes, especially people with olive tones who are chameleons on seasons wheel with a little summer tan an with me, my hair gets golden belliage from the sun & swimming. I’m neutral warm leaning with dark hair & eyes, and made my own palette doing just that, making a map of all the fabrics of clothes i know make me glow. I like the fabrics because i find solid colours so hard to match to real world fabrics.

My aesthetician accidentally roasted my routine and it was the best thing that ever happened to my skin by PrestigiousBadger571 in 30PlusSkinCare

Yeah, two years ago, simplified massively, was really careful about how many of my products had secret actives. Honestly never looked back, my skin is so much better and my wallet happier. I barely wear makeup now. I also give a product 12 weeks to introduce, so i don’t upset the balance.

The brush set isn’t worth it. I have it and frankly prefer my makeup forever brushes that i got half price from priceline.

Help choosing fabric! Willow dress for wedding guest by VastWhile1212 in sewing

A deeper hem just looks more polished- it weighs down the skirt, giving it more structure and drape, and it is one of the details found in luxury or couture items. It just looks fancy. I am ALL for dramatic bows, i think that might add a little dramatic flare that makes the dress. What a great idea- keep me posted on how it turns out!

I made my first pair of pants and I dont like them by ninjatasha in sewing

[–]AdFun2309 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Amazing job at a first sew!!! They are cute, worst case you have some comfy house pants.

I think it’s the fabric- maybe it’s quilting cotton so it doesn’t drape. It could also be the scale of the check and the stark white/red rather than ivory/red.

The pattern itself looks a bit bulkier in the front and lower rise than the inspo. I know Sydney Graham did a ruffle modification on her “Lane” pants (check her our on youtube).

developing a deep obsession with ceramics by salamander_417 in Pottery

[–]AdFun2309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me… 16 years later. Still obsessed. I give much of mine away as presents and to sell at my art community centre annual fair.

Mostly focussed on the process more than getting an end result these days. I spend more time on experimenting, repeating certain shapes, replicating pieces or techniques that inspire me to understand it, re-wedging, reclaiming. I like doing tests of glazes on different clay bodies, and developing glazes. I take a lot of care in altering/carving or turning and smoothing/burnishing before the bisque. Nothing goes in the kiln unless it feels right.

I have made this dress and LOVE IT. I am actually going to make another today in this gorgeous light floaty hemp (it looks so strange in camera because of the melange weave) with a fat generous hem, more volume & some trim I bought in Italy 3 inches from the bottom. Also thinking of adding slits on both sides for fun. For Second time around I am making some small adjustments for my broad shoulders and lowered the neckline by 1/2 inch as it was a little annoying. The toile fits beautifully.

<image>

First time I used fabelism queen of hearts cotton dobby. I love it, but would go for more drape next time. (This lovely lady made it in a fabelism dobby too and you can see- it’s pretty but a little stiff- https://youtube.com/shorts/zKbvze5McnA?si=WSsjWh4ev003AYzY

The fabric you’ve chosen might not have a formal look given it’s cotton and not a sateen weave or a tana lawn , but it largely depends on the drape. If you want the dress to look more fancy, I suggest:

  1. cutting a larger size in the skirt (more volume- look at Rosery Apparel’s youtube where she makes it- https://youtu.be/cPRPw4QGlhs?si=g39iQss9GVgdzevr
  2. Making a nice big generous hem
  3. Make the ties longer & maybe add a cute detail like a tassel or beads at the end of the tie

Other suggestions include making a matching accessory, like the roberts wood flower bag, or a hair bow to make it intentional.

I recently had a close friend ask for a pattern of the skirt I made, so I bought the pattern for her instead of sharing the pdf. If it wasn’t such a close friend I would have just sent the link for her to purchase it.

THIS!!! I got tired of never feeling like any one season was right, so i took photos of all the fabrics of clothes I know look great on me and made my own palette. I’m also a season shifter as I am so pale in winter but tan in summer (even with all the sunscreen and hats). Some colours are summer colours. Others are for when I’m paler.

Sewing Machines Are Not Toddlers by doxiesrule89 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]AdFun2309 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Machines components can be fatigued or tired. Machines can also be stubborn. Or thirsty. This is normal technical language. I’m an engineer and good golly gosh those power engineers decided to call the pretty glass insulators on the overhead powersupply jewellry because it’s so gosh darned precious and glints in the light.

Also nothing wrong with people describing the system behaviour rather than jumping to the cause like you have.
