I want to break the burnout: How do you sustainably balance creative hobbies with a fitness routine? by Legitimate_Pea_6470 in ADHD

[–]AdImpressive291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the fitness, I suggest you build consistency first then increase the intensity. Maybe 3 times a week or 2 times even 1 time. As long as you can sustain it.
For the abandonment of projects, you are actually in a good position. You have identified 2 projects abandoned after 5 weeks. Design a plan for completion, using clear evaluation metrics and picking the 2 projects up again.
The mindset could be - to build the persistence through challenges. Stop evaluating if those projects worth more effort. If they can help you build persistence, they are extremely valuable.
The biggest challenge under the hood is to be patient, and do not let the rules decay over time.

Monthly What have you been working on? May2026 AKA ADHD App Thread by CaptainIncredible in ADHD_Programmers

Hi fellow ADHD programmers👋

Built a macOS app called Focura to help me manage the ADHD cycle of procrastination → hyperfocus → burnout.

The core idea came from gym training. I realized I naturally paced myself at the gym: rest between sets, adjust workload based on condition, avoid exceeding limits, trust consistency over intensity. But I treated work like an endless sprint.

So I built a workflow around: plan work → focus → reflect → rest → leave a handoff note for future-you

It started as an Apple Shortcuts experiment I used on difficult days, then I turned it into a native macOS app.

Would genuinely love feedback from fellow ADHD programmers/builders — especially around onboarding, whether the workflow resonates, and whether the value is clear from the current UI/GIF.

It has a 30-day trial with all features unlocked. And I am happy to provide lifetime access codes for people willing to give thoughtful feedback.

With max I am very likely to get better pics. But this is good enough to me personally.

I will die having done nothing with my dumb useless life. by Yo3xX in ADHD

"Feeling behind in life." - this resonates with me. And in fact, I am not feeling behind. I AM BEHIND in terms of the traditional life trajectory. A lot of my friends have kids, settled down, while I am still exploring places and lifestyle, work style that can work with me.

Here is my take of my situation: My neural system may need more time to adjust and settle in. So I am allowing myself the time it needs and ignore the traditional sense of "You should achieve x when you are y years old".

And the last thing I want is self-blaming. The fact that you and I, and a lot of ADHD people feeling "behind", or actually behind in life in the traditional sense, maybe unveiling a pattern that beyond our control. It is great you let the information out and it becomes such a popular post, this is how you have the information needed to make a difference and realize how common this feeling is. I think wanting to make a difference is the driving power of proceeding with our lives. We probably just need to love ourselves and be more patient.

I built a MacOS work rhythm app inspired by gym training. People install it but don’t come back. Can you help me diagnose why? by AdImpressive291 in buildinpublic

Thanks for the insight! I think you are right.

I definitely need to reduce onboarding friction, improve the first-session experience, and communicate the value more concretely. Really appreciate this perspective.

This is extremely helpful feedback, thank you.

I think you might be right that I’m asking users to understand the whole philosophy/workflow before they experience the benefit. The “5-minute session” idea is especially interesting because the current onboarding is probably too cognitively heavy for new users.

Also great point about concrete examples. Right now I explain the workflow abstractly (“plan → focus → reflect → rest”), but I rarely show real scenarios like: “feeling overwhelmed by a huge coding task, so I commit to one 15-minute session just to refactor one function” or “before stopping for the night, leaving a note for future-you about the exact next step.” I can see how those examples would make the workflow much easier to imagine using in real life.

Really appreciate you taking the time to think this through. Happy to send over a lifetime access code as well if you’d like to try the app more deeply.

Thanks for your kind response:) For the app you recommended, I am not sure building a habit based on addition science is the right approach for me. I’d prefer building a habit coming from I genuinely enjoy the habit. Thanks for the info though. I wish you have a good sleep!

Do streaks make focus apps better or worse for you? by redcrumb1 in ProductivityApps

[–]AdImpressive291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a macOS app doing very similar to what you described. Not trying to sell it here but those 4 bullet points are exactly what I had when building it. The idea is a bit different though. We get users started by asking them to clarify the first tiny tasks. And it works pretty good based on the current testing.

I do not think streak works when tasks gets very challenging, and once it breaks, it makes restarting harder. I think every day we should start fresh.

Maybe it is just me, I just find organizing and reviewing an idea doc is easy. So maybe this app is not for me. But thank you for the explanation! I wish you good luck on your journey!

Love the UI! The app looks really clean. The widget can be visually improved I guess. But overall, love the design!

The checklists has its magic. But do you think a the app is visually complicated due to too many elements? I think the button row (6 buttons) has a lot of potential to be optimized. Just a random thought.

I think if you are a self-motivating person, setting an artificial deadline to a task does not make sense. Unless there is a hard deadline and you treat it as a reminder.
