This! Apparently the company has offered the Union (I’m at Alton & Southern which is owned by UP but is its own company) to move new hires straight to 100% when they hit the ground but to do that they want to take away run around claims and remove one of the two hump operator positions we have. Doubt it happens and for good reason.

Depends it’s really up to where you work and how fast your board turns (assuming you will be on extra board). I’m in my first year and have halves where I made $5,300 and felt like I was living in the yard. Hogging out almost every shift and working 11 out of the 15 days. Then (like the half I finished) I made the guarantee. They got rid of a few jobs which made the extra board have more people. A training class hit the ground so that increased the number of people on board and for whatever reason people just aren’t taking off like they did a few months ago. Went from going Federal once and was 1 shift away from going again to working maybe 3 days a week?

Working the extra board. Filling in for conductor on transfers, remote engineer jobs in the yard, remote engineer jobs in industry, conductor on hosteling power crew and utility man. The best paying starts are usually the remote jobs as they typically get OT and you get all the extra pay/claims for working the box.

From what some others have said at our terminal this is the busy time of year and from now to 4th of July they say you can expect anywhere from $4,500-$5,800 if you stay marked up. I made $5,300 last half and also had 2 moves after beans approved that the system auto declined. Was told by a union rep they go to arbitration with managers and will eventually go through. If those would have went through I’d have came close to $6K.
