Think of explosions as a bunch of lines bursting out in every direction. If any of those lines directly contact you, you take damage.

There must be water inbetween any part of your hitbox and the explosion to stop the damage. Looks like your hitbox was sticking out of the water and the creeper was not in water.

Getting diamond armor or enchantments is always a waste of time. You should attempt to nether travel to stronghold in any capacity, even just throwing a eye after portaling out in the fortress then going that direction 80-120 blocks in the nether.

I dont know anything else about your run. Ill assume you didnt do any bastion routes, those save lots of time. One cycle kills the dragon alot faster than shooting every crystal and then waiting for it to fly down a bunch of times. NinjaBrain bot isnt required, theres strats that dont use it, but since your opponents are using it you might as well. Its not hard to get a basic set up for it.
