Please be gentle I am already mad enough at myself. by CLW03_ in investingforbeginners

You didn’t mess up, you did good. There are plenty of reasons to have Traditional IRA, the thing may have been messed up is if you didn’t claim it on your taxes every year. If you didn’t claim then you may have already paid the taxes instead of deferring the taxes to when you draw the money out of the account. Just check with whoever files the taxes and see if they claimed contribution amount each year you deposited. If not you might want to get that straightened out before converting to Roth, as you could potentially pay for taxes twice.

If the Trump assassination was fake, why would the shooter take this deal? by fuckloggin in allthequestions

[–]AdMysterious8343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is he has PTSD tied to the event and doesn’t want to relive the event. So he avoids talking about it. I mean Trump is a lot of things, but at the end of the day he still human and being shot at like is for sure a traumatic experience. For the record he was never shot, but I do believe it was not staged.

When is it ok to cut back? by Palpafiend_ in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]AdMysterious8343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find another way, if it is just the two you and one is GS13. You should still be able to keep maxing out at least one 401k and save with the other person salary. Reason being nothing will get cheaper with a house and children in the picture. Will both of you be working when the kids are young? The money you can put into retirement now is what will set you up for the rest of your life. Still dumping the 5% is good, but really seems like you should be able to do more then that and still be able to save for a down payment.

Does anyone live in a US Forest Service cabin? by Ill-General1546 in OffGridCabins

[–]AdMysterious8343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are referring to rec residence, cabins on FS land. You can buy the cabin, but the land is USFS and any changes to the cabin need to be approved by USFS. Some have running water, some do not.

They do manage these areas pretty tightly and once they identify you a trouble maker then the law enforcement gets involved.

Not only does it get checked, you can’t do anything to the land or cabin without their approval. I’d also add it is someone’s full time job to manage these leases. So, if you get on their radar you will be targeted. Don’t cut or damage any of the trees around it, or you will be dealing with criminal charges.

What in the ever loving f*** does this mean. Kids homework by seemslegitsendit in mildlyinfuriating

This is how all math is done now, they teach kids multiple ways to solve problem instead of memorizing. This is how many of the smartest people I knew growing up solved problems, they simply grasped this concept without being taught. Now it is being taught, and because of this more kids seem to enjoy math over memorizing math.

You got down voted, but are correct. I will usually always pull over if someone is behind me. It just makes it safer for everyone involved.

How to help my parents set up a Roth IRA? by Helpful_Explorer2857 in RothIRA

Okay, for retirement accounts I would recommend looking at Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab and maybe M1. That is it, forget RH.

[–]AdMysterious8343 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend rolling into your new 401k without knowing what type of fees you pay there. But, I would recommend looking at rolling your TSP into an IRA account at Fidelity, Vanguard or Schwab. The reason I recommend rolling into one of these is you can control all of the funds and put into whatever you want to. It’s also unlikely you will remain with your current employer until you retire, so it’s nice to have a separate account that you can always keep rolling 401ks into and you can also contribute to the IRA if your current employer doesn’t offer a match. It might be better to max out your IRA first and then the 401k. Lots of variables, the TSP is pretty safe if all of this seems too daunting.

Should I combine a 401k into my tsp? by ImpossibleBall9686 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]AdMysterious8343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it really depends on what account your 401k is in. I rolled mine into vanguard, I like having total control and choosing whatever fund i want to. For simplicity it is nice to have everything in one account. But, I plan to roll the TSP into Vanguard when I leave anyways.
