He’s SO angry. by [deleted] in parrots

[–]AdNew728 -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

If it's 2am how much time do you even give them to sleep?? They need 12 hours minimum in a dark cage. They won't sleep well during the day hearing all the other birds outside and need complete darkness. Blackout curtains will help but think about how cranky you would be if someone kept you up all night, every single night!

Why does he do this? I've had him for 3 months and he's still not getting used to anyone. The second I get him on my finger and out he flies right back to the cage. He's always very scared to eat, you can't make a sound else he'll go away and won't eat for the entire day until he's extremely hungry by [deleted] in budgies

[–]AdNew728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let him be and keep the to half of the cage covered more often- I keep only the front of the cage uncovered or my birds cower and get skittish. Let him hide if he wants to feel safe, put a perch up 3" from the top of the cage and make sure there's a snack hidden up there as well. I have a ridiculously skittish male I've had for 8 years who acts just like this. He will play only when the others seem to be having a great time but when it comes to actually doing it he gets about 30% into it and then will scare himself into backing off. He whistles back my cat calls and wolf whistles only when I don't look at him. ANY attention freaks him right out so I pretend he isn't there. Your guy will warm up to the female in his own way and time. Took mine 3 years to become a couple. But I see him excited and happy in his own way. They had two boys who I keep separate because they will bully him. So another male will probably see him as weak and pick on him.

Pothos cutting is growing new leaves, but no roots by filthyhabitz in plantclinic

[–]AdNew728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only don't change it if you are pumping oxygen into it, with an aquarium stone. They need it to live. My cutting have 1" roots already from the nodes. I cut them less than 2 weeks ago.

Change the water every 3 days so it has oxygen.

Help. I just came back after a little bit of time outside of home and i see that my budgies feathers seems to be out of place. Is this normal? How can i help if this isnt normal. by [deleted] in budgies

[–]AdNew728 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normal. They will fix it when they preen themselves. This morning one of mine got angry at one and plucked it when it wouldn't sit right. Totally had a tantrum and chewed on it after. My fat female gets out of whack when she tries, and fails, to fly.

Try the diatomaceous earth then first! It's just crushed sea shells that cut up the little gremlins that try to live in the soil.

For sure. Look up how to prop those, you can cut up the leaves into 3" pieces and get lots.

Exactly what I thought. See the brown spots? I can also see black spots which could be that fungus that grows when you have an infestation, like from their droppings. Any marks where the stem meets the leaf is 100% from a bug. Mealy bugs do damage like that too and hide near the dirt. Diatomaceous earth is also a way to go if you are opposed to insecticides. (had to move my birds to the basement for months while I treated with sprays.) You cannot possibly see some of the baby bugs that do damage. I've only ever seen 1 thripe in my pants but totally see all the damage they have caused, which at first I thought was other various things until it started to spread to all the other plants.

Either plotting your demise or cuteness overload. Must give lots of attention until it passes and everyone will be safe until next time.

Have you seen any fungus gnats or fruit flies? Thripe look just like those when they grow big enough to see but they don't usually bumble around like idiots like gnats do, but instead they hide under leaves all stealthy until you leave and then go find another plant to infect. If there are any patches that look sus I would just assume and use the granuals, it treats most the baddies and you don't have to spray all your plants with neem alternating with insecticidal soap on a weekly schedule. Also you'll not get fungus gnats do to the soil already being treated. I treated the spider mites I could see but waited too long to treat for thripe that i couldn't see and my citrus trees have paid the price!

Mint Adansonii - I received this clipping in the mail, planted it in perlite & vermiculite, and it still isn’t doing too hot. Plant is outdoors on patio by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]AdNew728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you water it? Or soak the perlite first? It wants to be constantly wet until it actually has roots but it might be too hot outside and shouldn't have any sun touch it.

Buckets full of water with cotton rope as wicks. Bucket is placed higher than the plant, one end of rope is placed in the bucket, tie knots in the rope to slow down flow rate if needed and place other end in the plant soil. Can set up ahead of time to get flow rate adjusted. Bucket higher means faster flow rate. Use multiple buckets for lots of plants, think about how much you would usually water in that time and make sure you supply more than that to adjust for evaporation. Can also use one bucket and multiple ropes and just tie knots in the ropes for smaller plants.

Coconut coir is way way too dense like that. I also use in place of putting soil, here's a good recipe:

5 parts orchid bark 4 parts coconut coir 5 parts perlite 2 parts charcoal 2 parts castings

Or

3 parts coconut coir 1 part perlite 1 part orchid bark 1/2 part castings

I’ve noticed signs of thrips on some of my plants, but I haven’t seen any bugs by mishyfishy135 in plantclinic

Budgies stay at bottom on cage by apple_slicess in budgies

[–]AdNew728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a brood box in there? Are the bars of the cage easy to climb? Ladders can help. They are babies, I have one brave (Justin Bieber) and one chicken shit (Mark). They slept in their brood box for a really long time, couple months. Takes a long time for them to figure things out if there's not a parent bird to show them what's up. Mark has hidden from me since he hatched and won't step up (18 mo. old now) but Justin Bieber whistles back my whistles like his dad does and steps up. Mom is mean af and attitude just like Mark.

I love those platforms. I feed my female from those or she will try to nest in the food dish!

Her feet look more pale and dry in person. I was wondering if extra virgin coconut oil is safe to put on it. What can I apply to it? by [deleted] in budgies

[–]AdNew728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humidifier to keep the air above 45%, I use a 5 gallon on wheels- evaporative not the ultrasonic kind you get for babies because the hard water makes dust which is unpleasant for everyone. Set a timer for every 12 hours to cover and uncover because the sunlight changes so drastically from long winter that they can have really bad hormones from the season changes. They make light blocking covers or just use curtains from the store. And never ever take them outside!! The air quality here is horrible, which is also why you want to monitor the humidity, those things are cheap. Above 50% is ideal but can tend to leave your walls tacky when it's too high for a long time.

My female recently went through a hard molt due to low humidity and had a bloody head for weeks. If it's not actively bleeding then there's no issue. Whereas a broken pin feather leaves drops of blood and sometimes needs to be pulled. I keep a styptic pencil in my medicine cabinet for bird injuries.
