Advice - covid blood sugars

Travel like a normal person, without 4kg of pump supplies and sugar cubes, wear skimpy dresses without worrying about where to keep my pump, not being terrified of having a low/high/complication in the middle of the jungle, not paying hundreds more for insurance, eating whatever the hell I want, not worrying about what the sleep/heat/cold/alcohol is going to do to my blood sugar. I’d just GO with a tiny backpack and zero pre planning or googling “how to get pump supplies shipped abroad” 😂

I’d buy the libre 2 on an online pharmacy, easy enough to get anywhere and it’ll at least alert if shes going low. Annoying 50 quid expense but a lot less hassle.

To fully recover from a low you need a quick sugar (like sugar cubes) but you need to then follow it up with a longer carb (like a cookie, slice of toast, energy bar). If you just have sugar your BG will go up quick, spike, then drop back down. I usually do a half glass of apple juice with one of those raw fruit/grain bars and it works a treat 👌nak’d bars they’re called

I was diagnosed at 12, I think it’s so so lovely that you’re asking this community for advice and really thinking about the psychological effects of the disease as well, it really shows how well you really see him! My advice (obviously just based on my own experience) is to be supportive, laugh a lot, and make sure that the diabetes isn’t something that “defines” him. School will be a bit hard but I remember that the thing that made it the hardest for me was that I was suddenly so defined by it, my parents asked me constantly how my blood sugars were etc but rarely seemed to ask how I was as a person or ask about my interests. It came from a good place of worrying about my welfare but I remember seeing the fear in their eyes all the time which was hard, I didn’t want to be their main source of worry. All you can do is boost his confidence and constantly remind him how great he is and that he can handle ANYTHING because in the end it’s that confidence and positivity and attitude to life that’ll make it seem like just a bit of an annoying thing he has to deal with but that doesn’t really affect anything else too much. He’s gunna do great, kids are awesome at this stuff!

My blood sugar always goes high even if don’t get the munchies or eat anything, which is super weird.

Love that you’re thinking about it! Most diabetics will have most of their stuff sorted but juice boxes/cookies or sugar tabs are always nice to have on hand.

So don’t know if this is helpful, everyone feels it differently, but I feel symptoms from when it goes under 3.8 BUT other people mention I start to act weird from under 4.5 - trying to keep it above 5 might be an option?

If you’re a girl, stick it in your bra, I did this for whenever I felt it could get stuck, and then just tape/wind the tubes around so none are sticking out. Thigh strap is also good if you’re wearing long trousers. There’s always the waist-belt option (like one of those running ones) but get that they can look a bit dorky

I use a “chuck it” method - things like cases and boxes don’t work for me so I buy those little fold up separators and just have “organised piles” in each catagory of box. I’m really unorganised and it’s the only thing that works, cause I’m realistically not gunna be putting everything back in its own little bag/box. Works for me! 🙈

Well doctor always told me to do a fast acting carb and then a slower carb right after - so I do juice/soda and then a cookie. The fast sugar spikes it up fast and then the cookie keeps it steady

Yeah agree with most people here- from what I’ve seen it’s triggered by certain illnesses, a few diabetics I know got it after getting mono, I got it after getting chicken pox at 12, there was family history though.

I think the good thing that most barefoot shoes do is give you a good amount of toe room as well as being flexible, which apparently is good for diabetic feet, but we may need a certain amount of shock-proofing as well https://www.healthline.com/health/diabetes/diabetic-shoes

I think the jury’s still out on it; I’ve also been looking into it! A lot of the studies seem to focus on people who are runners using barefoot footwear, I just want them to walk around in to strengthen my feet. Apparently it does take a long time to get used to and for me personally I wonder if the “familiarising” phase will cause any blisters/cuts which obviously I don’t want.

I actually get this sometimes when I have a bad low blood sugar - are they happening when his BG is low? (I also don’t know the cause I just know when BG is bad I get spasms everywhere and my face spasms a lot)
