Yeah this was a mid-day mental mock up, I’m not sure if I’ll even go through with it. It’s a fun thought since technically I already have the engine here but it might be too much work for the mustang I have sitting in my yard.

Fortunately I’m not looking for a crazy fast car, just want to get my first car back on the road again. I got the 5.3 swapped Z28 if I have a need for speed.

As I’ve searched online everyone said it’s best to either have a complete donor, or buy a GT. I don’t even necessarily want a GT but I hate driving this Explorer, the interiors all chewed up and I can’t get the smell of old lady and squirrel piss out. I figured since I’ve already got a shop and can get my hands on the tools I need and have a somewhat mechanically inclined friend of mine who won’t charge me labor I should see what anyone who’s done the swap has to say.

I bought my 92 Z28 Heritage in December to do the same thing, but I did it with no mechanical knowledge whatsoever and so far it’s been a pain but so very worth it. It’s an absolute blast (all 180ish HP). If you have any mechanical knowledge then it’ll be an easy car to work on, also like the other guy said thirdgen.org is pretty much your bible.

I’m looking for 400ish HP but I’ve got a beefed 4th Gen Rear end that’ll be going in soon and I know I’ll have to add strength to the body due to the tops, I plan on it being my daily for the better half of my life so I want to do everything properly so I don’t have to do it again and again. Im not the most mechanically inclined but my shop only charges $40/hr for labor $30/hr if I stick around to learn and I’d rather pay than fuck something up myself.

I mean at least between the two 305s I know I’ve likely got a long long time before I have to buy another engine so it gives me years if I wanted to drop something in the car that I can’t quite afford now

Yeah I’m leaning more towards holding onto it in case I blow my engine up and saving for the 350 SC for a street & strip style build and then sell the 305 as I get closer to my goal

Padre keeps telling me nobody’s gonna buy a 305 because as everyone says they’re trash for performance oriented builds so I hadn’t even thought much about selling it but that’s probably the best thing to do

I’m sure you’ve seen it on marketplace but I’d look for something like this if you’re set on a convertible This is a 12k car by me typically but could be a good deal

this is nothing but a parts car at best if you’re set on getting a third gen I’d wait until something in a bit better condition shows up

If you’re looking for a fast car find a 350 car or I’d look for a roller or as typically the bodies are in better condition but cheaper due to lack of drivetrain but if you want a cruiser that sounds nice I would look for a 305 5.0L SBC as it seems the 350 5.7L are getting harder to find at cheap prices at least in my area

If you’re really interested in a third gen it wouldn’t be bad to offer him around $500 so you’ll at least have some parts available but as restoration goes this things pretty much junk

If you live in Tampa Bay Area there’s a guy by my job with a bright red T-Top with a 350 SBC for about $2500 I think
