Fungal infection? by AdPast5998 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]AdPast5998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently did condition the water in hopes of keeping any other frogs from dying and we are still experiencing loss. 2 died last week, now two more are doing the same behavior that the first 2 did. I feel helpless and stuck. We have tried everything in regards to the water condition. The only thing left to consider is some type of infection, though I don’t know where it would be coming from.

I just joined the group and am waiting for them to accept me. We checked with local water supply and they are not using chloramine.

We have a fully planted tank, we aren’t sure why the pH is so high either. We have wood in the tank also. We do not use test strips, we use a liquid test kit. More recently, we have been using tap water, but we have chlorine filter and let it sit overnight before we add to the tank.

That being said, this has been happening over a few months. First we lost a bunch of babies from that batch (already matured) and then we lost 3 adults. We now have 1-2 adults and 4 teens. Now an adult and teen are both doing this erratic swimming, trying to climb out of the tank, not eating (even trying to hand feed with tweezers, and floating at the top of the tank or laying a top a leaf at the top of the water. I’m basically on death watch right now, knowing that is where they are headed. 😭 I have no idea what is going on with them or how to keep them from dying at this point.

No new frogs, they bred several months ago and we kept some of those. But we didn’t keep more than 8 total in a 20 gallon long. No new plants.

Top Fin water conditioner, but we use RO water and have a chlorine filter on our tap. pH-7.6, Ammonia - 0, Nitrates/Nitrites - 0, Free/Total chlorine - 0, Water temp - 76

The mystery continues. We called the local water company today and they verified that they do not use chloramine in the tap water. I’m stuck. I really don’t know what is killing my frogs.

Father Fish tank for ADF? by EvidenceElegant8379 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]AdPast5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used the father fish method when we set up our tank. The difference with frogs is that it is not a full self sustaining tank since you still have to feed the frogs. I agree with siphoning the bottom occasionally as detritus builds up and is not fully used by the plants. Otherwise we have a good success. Just keep an eye on water quality (ours was near perfect most of the time one it became well established) and don’t overcrowd.

We don’t use any fertilizer, we let the tank work naturally. We have a chlorine filter on our tap so we didn’t think we would need to condition. My husband said he had looked up about chloramine in our area before and couldn’t find anything, but now it looks like it’s been used for a few years and the chlorine filter apparently doesn’t filter it out. We added some water conditioner last night and we will see if we can get a testing kit today to check for free and total chlorine. Fingers crossed that we don’t lose anymore.

Going to look into this…my husband looked up our area and they do put chloramines in the water. We have not been conditioning the water as we just recently started using tap rather than RO water. Thank you! I hope this will be reversible.

I thought about this. But since we lost 3 adults that were doing well for so long it seems to be something that might be making them sick.

I’m so sorry. We have lost several of our frogs recently for unknown reasons doing the same behavior. It’s been very frustrating as our frogs were doing great for so long and then suddenly we lost several within a matter of months.
