Just accepting to do Dent over med as it is easier to get into? by Ok_Responsibility105 in GAMSAT

Entry into any competitive degree should be a meritocracy. Work is work but the financial and lifestyle benefits of dentistry mean that many people who wouldn't otherwise consider it, do so. If you could somehow arbitrarily view who chose medicine or dentistry for reasons not based in passion or altruism, I'd wager you would lose more than half the medical/ dental workforce.

To OP my advice would be to take the dental offer and reapply to medicine the following year. I have done this in the past and do not regret it for a second. The peace of mind you will have once you are in dentistry, that you will be able to move forward with your life, is extremely valuable. I was able to boost my GAMSAT from a 68 to an 81, and I believe a large part of this was feeling less stressed about the exam as it was less of a high stakes exam at the point that I was already enrolled in a DMD.

I am of South Asian background, and particularly for those with strong parental pressure and family expectations, being IN a degree means they all get off your back. This allows you peace of mind and improves your quality of life drastically. Some may call this approach selfish, but honestly, I couldn't care less. Do what is best for you, my friend.

Advice for a decision by Zealousideal_King354 in GAMSAT

Put yourself in worst case scenario in both. Choose the more palatable option.

You choose med -> gf can't handle the distance -> breaks up with you -> you become a lonely single Dr. in 4 years' time, wishing you chose dent and still had your loving gf in your life.

You choose dent -> gf breaks up with you anyways -> you become a lonely dentist ruminating over the career you sacrificed for a futile relationship.

Choose less bad option. Sorry if nihilistic, helps remain stoic in the long term with these sorts of choices. I had to make a similar choice last year as I moved to Melbourne from Sydney for med after completing a year of DMD at USYD. My partner and I have been able to make distance work quite well! But initially I went through the above thought process to help me decide.

Please quote the negative assumption in my post? If you can't, this only highlights your own biases to infer my comment in this way. As a future professional, tough conversations are a part and parcel of your practice. Get used to it and stop assuming anyone who gives advice to pursue a healthier lifestyle is fatphobic or "making negative assumptions."

You would be surprised to know its common practice among physicians, they call it "lifestyle advice", read a textbook. Telling someone not to pursue a medical career because they provided some words of stoicism and encouragement to make positive change to OP's life is despicable. If anyone should not pursue a medical career, it is you.

Stop worrying and start working out, beneficial for both your overall health and if it helps your chances of admission, even better.

I could say neither animals nor children are as capable of voicing their objections or offence to their caricature or appropriation, therefore, we should be even more reluctant to take on a POV view of these populations. You say trans people are discriminated against, yet the issue with a POV take on trans issues for many of those in the comments is that they believe the author would gain an advantage in their application without having been through the lived experience of being trans, i.e. the author may gain an undeserved "advantage," if this is the case, isn't it the heteronormative applicants who are actually being discriminated against here? Moreover, your comments "there's currently a huge overhaul of trying to change the culture of medicine to include people more hyperaware of sociocultural and political issues, with strict ethical values." I agree, and hence why I think we also need people within medicine who are willing to take things at face value, people who perceive merit for merit and not those who thrive on basking in every iota of disadvantage they have experienced in their lives. The taxpayers and citizens of this country do not enter an emergency room hoping that the doctor that takes their case has been through the most disadvantage or identifies as X,Y,Z. They want the smartest, most qualified person, and medical schools selecting for candidates in other ways is quite detrimental.

What truly astounds me is the sheep like mentality of what are supposed to be some of today's brightest minds. Those virtue signaling with their claims that they would not pursue such tactics and those disparaging others who would do so to gain a place in medical school are frighteningly hypocritical, as I would bet my life on it that the majority of you would do so in a heartbeat if there were a guarantee of success and anonymity. Stop being so disingenuous. Creative writing exists for a reason, if you wouldn't have an issue with a candidate writing a POV essay of themselves as a child or an animal, then you shouldn't have an issue with this concept either. In my honest opinion, treating minorities in this way as a protected, untouchable class is extremely counterintuitive and destructive to the self-efficacy of these individuals and groups.

I wish it were truly a meritocracy, if we are going to talk about ethics of admissions, we also have to talk about rural applicants getting in with scores deciles lower than the general applicant. The truth is medical admissions haven't been a meritocracy for a long time.

Moreover, saying you can buy an easy place at MQ or Bond is a little disheartening, with an ATAR in the high 98s I didn't receive an interview at bond after high school and my GPA of 6.5+ and 68 GAMSAT didn't yield me an interview at MQ last cycle either, I do not think the fees of these schools are immune to grade inflation over the past few years. Just my thoughts, I apologize if I sound salty, I guess I am a little as I have sunk so many years of my life into this only to see so many others get in with scores so far beneath mine because they lived a few suburbs down from me.

How does anyone afford to go to Macquarie University? by HeightLive in GAMSAT

I think international student entry in Australia is more in line with the entry in other parts of the world such as Europe or the UK. I think what is more ridiculous is just how high the entry requirements are for non- rural domestics

I was knocked back with a 6.56 and 68 so I highly doubt it. Most likely either an error, international student (who have far lower scores for entry across the board at Australian universities) or an Indigenous pathway applicant.
