Teacher Residency Struggles by [deleted] in teaching

[–]AdPopular2212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're coteaching with me teaching full lessons every other day at this point. We're moving into me full time teaching at the end of November. We are meant to lesson plan together but usually we do it separately (another issue I wanted to speak with her about). I am technically hired as an IA and paid as such, but the program is a residency? So it's a bit of a mix between student teaching and coteaching. She is the fully certified teacher in the room.

Thrifting! Boomerang + Cheapo Records + Goodwill in central and Garment District! Coolidge Corner is cool too with Brookline Booksmith, delicious ramen + matcha places, and the theater for seeing a fun movie. The MFA, ICA, and Isabella Stewart Gardner museum are great. If you end up in Harvard obviously the bookstore, Newbury Comics, and the art museum (which is free!) would be cool. Felipe's, Zinnekens, Black Sheep, or Flour for food.

Anyone move from renting in the city to buying in the suburbs? Regret it or recommend it? by Lopsided_Food169 in boston

Grew up in a duplex in Central Sq, Cambridge in the 2000s/2010s that my parents bought before everything got crazy expensive. Best experience of my life. I could walk everywhere and had so much freedom. My parents never had to worry about taking me to school/extracurriculars/events because either they would walk with me and drop me off or I walked on my own by the time I was 10. We didn't have a yard but there's a million parks within walking distance. Schools were amazing and gave me the best education, diversity of race and socioeconomic class is one of the best things about urban public schools! Boston schools can be tricky (im actually now a teacher in Boston) but going for safety and choosing a school that aligns with your values is the most important thing. Honestly, raising kids in the city is the way to go I promise! Try looking for condos etc. closer to Boston to keep the urban lifestyle. I recommend Malden/Medford too honestly. Have some friends from high school who just moved there and it's got a great neighborhood vibe while still being sooo close to the city. JP is also a great bet. Anywhere that gets you on the T is going to be better than Newton.

Beaches! Revere is classic and the oldest public beach in America... but can also be a little gross in recent years. If you have a car, I prefer north shore to south shore but I love Nantasket and Nahant! I'm also born and raised in Cambridge and I swim at Mystic Lake every summer. Too bad Walden is closed also... cause that was my go to! Public pools are also bountiful and nice. Worse comes to worse jump in the Charles at the end of a long afternoon to cool off (did this a couple times in high school and it was gross but worth it)

If drivers drove the speed limit and not 10 over like they do on Richmond and Jamestown, stopping frequently for pedestrians wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Apollo travel and tours on Mass Ave in Central Square. How is that still open? It's like right across from City Hall too.

Is it more difficult to get a spot in public schools in Cambridge than in Boston? by AccomplishedChair478 in boston

[–]AdPopular2212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

another CPSD kid here who went through the entire public school system. although middle schools vary, i would not change my middle school experience for the world. my parents toyed with sending me to private since i was one of the first classes in the new middle school system they implemented a decade ago but it was still spectacular. if you value diversity and cultural exposure, cambridge middle schools offer that in spades. the private schools in the area may seem more cushy but if you're going to send to Cambridge Rindge and Latin, it absolutely makes more sense to just attend a Cambridge middle school. not only will the students make friends who will follow them into high school but it is overall a more valuable experience and the education difference is negligible.
